Application for Education Benefits
Please help us get there and make sure to complete a form for your children attending SPPS Online School! OES is only a few applications away from 100% completion!
It is critical that all families complete an Application for Education Benefits each school year. These applications determine how much funding your child’s school receives for educational programs and supports. Additionally, eligible families can qualify for other benefits. Paper applications are available at school or can be completed online at schoolcafe.com/spps.
Principal News
Dear OES Parents,
It's time to stop and take a break from school and all of its responsibilities. We understand the value of education and everything related to learning and achievement, but we also understand how crucial it is to spend time with family and friends.
This upcoming holiday holds significant importance for students and their parents, serving as a vital opportunity for reflection, gratitude, and family bonding. For students, this holiday fosters a sense of appreciation for the support and sacrifices made by their parents and caregivers throughout the year. It encourages them to take a moment to acknowledge their achievements and the people who have helped them along the way. For parents, this holiday is a chance to reconnect with their children, reinforcing family values and traditions that strengthen their relationships. This shared time allows families to create lasting memories, engage in meaningful conversations, and cultivate a spirit of gratitude that can enhance emotional well-being and resilience in both students and parents alike. Ultimately, this holiday acts as a reminder of the importance of community, love, and support in navigating the challenges of academic life.
Let's make sure we put our attention on connecting with each family member and show them how vital they are to us all. When we stand together, we are more powerful. Enjoy this lovely short break with your loved ones.
Sincerely,
John Osorio
Assistant Principal

Protocol for Managing Classroom Interruptions During Online Instruction
SPPS Online offers a unique opportunity for students, parents, and the school to engage in their child's education. Google Meets focus on teaching and learning, maintaining consistency with traditional classrooms. Distraction-free learning environments are essential. Issues can be addressed in Google Meets, but not during live classroom sessions. Parents can arrange private discussions with teachers, but these must be done outside instructional time to maintain the online learning environment.
Please access and get familiar with this protocol. Your understanding and cooperation are highly appreciated. This protocol is available in three languages (English, Hmong, and Spanish).

4th Grade
4th grade has just begun two new units! In math, we began our division unit, and students are learning to use compatible numbers and Distributive Property to divide large numbers. In writing, students are working on Informative writing on Native American topics. Our new read aloud is James and The Giant Peach! No spoilers, please! Lastly, we began working on cursive writing, and I strongly encourage your student to practice using the resources in Seesaw or youtube videos and draw by hand in order to develop fine motor memory.
Collaborative student groups provide students with opportunities to practice their academic vocabulary, problem solving and cooperation skills. 4th grade has improved tremendously at these skills since September, and I am so proud of them!

Hello 5th grade families!

We will be taking a closer look at the Indigenous retelling of Thanksgiving next week as well. In writing, students are working on procedural writing. They are telling us the directions on how to do something they are an expert at. Ask them what they are working on!
Please continue to reach out with questions or concerns.

Art
Welcome to week 12, rotation 4 of Art.
Kindergarten Artists read the story, Still This Love Goes On, by Buffy Sainte-Marie. It is a love letter to family, home and Indigenous traditions. We talked about the people we love and who love us. Students created heart art to represent all the love they have for themselves and their families.
The third grade artists learned about Comic Strips and we looked at the work of Mark Mindt, member of the Spirit Lake Nation. As a child he never felt like there were any comic superheroes that looked like him so as an adult he decided to create his own Native American Superhero named, Koda, which means friend. Koda battles a character named Negativity as a way to bring positivity to all. Looking at our own stories and our own families and cultures we created original comic strips based on our lives.
