Lambs Ledger
April 2024
Message from the Principal, Jamie McCarthy
Time is flying by! We are welcoming the final marking period of the school year! I hope you and your family are enjoying spring break and are rejuvenated and ready to finish strong!
Along with our academics and social emotional learning, attendance is a focus area for us. Since the pandemic, attendance around the nation has declined. At Lambs, we want to support you and help remove any barriers that may exist to interfere with attendance. We know that if your student is present in school, they have a better chance of succeeding! If you student must be absent, please turn in a parent note or medical excuse within 3 days of your child returning to school.
Did you know that your child can be identified with chronic absenteeism even if they have excused absences? Students who miss over 18 days in the school year whether excused or not are considered chronically absent. We are asking you to partner with us to ensure that your student is in school.
This month we recognize and celebrate our Military Children! These students are the youngest heroes of our nation. Together as an entire school, we will celebrate! Please see details below!
Thank you for being an essential part of your child's learning journey. It takes everyone working together as a team to ensure a top notch education.

Special Area News
PE with Coach Wilber: This is what we have been working on and will be working on in PE class this month and what we will be working on after we return from Spring Break!!
CD/K--we have been learning about the March muscle of the month, the quadriceps muscle (upper thigh muscle), and incorporating upper body exercises that help improve the strength of this muscle. We revisited our throwing and catching skills for the majority of the month and will be working on striking and volleying when we return from Spring Break, along with some more teamwork and cooperation games.
1st/2nd/3rd--we have been incorporating different stretches to increase flexibility and muscular strength. We also revisited our throwing and catching skills unit by reviewing the cues of a catch and throw while focusing on teamwork and then having some throwing and catching stations outside. This past week we just started our striking and hitting unit, where we will explore this unit using stations and small group work (volleyball skills, long handled implements, etc), and will continue to be outside more as the weather cooperates!!
4th/5th--we started our volleyball skills unit, working on the skills of bumping/setting/serving to try and play a game of volleyball incorporating teamwork and cooperation, and having different review stations to continue to work on skills related to volleyball and teamwork. We will start what I am assuming is going to be a popular unit here at Lambs, the soccer skills unit, while continuing to work on teamwork and cooperation skills.
As always if you have any questions or need further clarifications please don't hesitate to reach out or send a message. Please double check your child's PE day so your child has the proper footwear so that they can be successful in PE class!!
Library with Ms. Smith: Happy National School Library Month, Lambs!
Thank you~ Read Across America Week was a great success in March and I am so impressed with the tiles that were painted on Tile Night- what a talented Lambs Family we have! Also, if you are ever interested in volunteering during our book fairs, please contact chaisson_smith@charleston.k12.sc.us. Lambs has a Fall Book Fair in October and a Spring Book Fair in March each year!
One School, One Book~ The school is reading "Wonder" by R. J. Palacio which has been a great topic of discussion in library classes and even in-passing with students in the hallway. We will finish the book this month as a school and activities are planned in the library that go along with its themes and topics of kindness, caring, and friendship!
April~ April is National School Library Month, please take a minute to complete this form for community members, students, families, and teachers and share your love for the Lambs Library! I believe the library is the heart of our school- the place students come to explore all other areas of topics they may learn in class. All are welcome!
READ~ I wanted to share this blog post from Beanstack which clearly lays out the value and benefits of independent reading. Here at Lambs, we support the time for students to read independently and hope they go home to enjoy reading 20 minutes a day. As always, please continue supporting students' logging their reading in Beanstack! This is a great way to track their reading and earn prizes for doing so!
Art with Ms. Bowers: We have had an awesome month in the Lambs Elementary Art Room! We have been working hard to prepare for the upcoming art show on May 24th. Each student will have an artwork on display, so be sure to make time to stop by and peruse our gallery! This month we have been learning about important figures in art history, like Paul Cezanne. Cezanne challenged the rules of art simply by painting an apple! He felt that painting mundane, everyday objects, like apples, helped to celebrate all of the small moments in life. I hope you take the upcoming month to celebrate the small moments! Especially if one of those small moments is stopping to see the apple still life drawings created by our kindergarten artists!
