On Monday, February 29, author J.A. White visited our 6th graders. The first book in his Thickety series is on our Lone Star reading list! He claims that he loves to write stories to scare children and the 6th graders had a blast rating scary things that he proposed. Check out some pictures from his visit.
Six students answered challenging trivia questions about the books on this year's Lone Star reading list as they competed in the third annual Battle of the Books competition hosted by Region 13 Education Center. The Bibliowarts, read every book on the list and studied for several months to prepare for the competition. They designed a Harry Potter themed poster, dressed in Harry Potter attire, and had a blast! The competition was grueling, but they held strong and secured a tie for second place. Losing the first place position by only one point to the Literary Lions (last year's winners). The team is already preparing for next year so that they can take home the gold!
HCMS raised $1,544.13 for the Book Spring Read-A-Thon, putting 514 books in the hands of Austin children! Way to go!

HCMS students will be participating in March Book Madness! Just as in basketball, we have pitted some of the best of the best books against each other: Fantasy vs Reality.
Students will vote for their favorite books in the brackets each week. Students don't have to read all the books to participate. Watch the book trailers from the links below to find information about the books. Who will predict the winners? Check out the two Brackets below:
