Weekly Community Updates - August 9, 2024
Dear Students and Families,
I hope every student had a fantastic first week of school! We were thrilled to welcome our freshman to Oceana and welcome back our returning students.
Next week is our Welcome Back Rally which means we have spirit days all next week. I hope all students participate in the week's festivities. You can find the information below on spirit days or here in our Oceana Events Calendar.
A few things to put on your calendar is that Wednesday, September 11th is staff development day which means no students on this day. Also, Back to School Night will be on Thursday September 19th. Oceana traditionally has Back to School Night later than other schools because our freshmen prepare for their Freshmen Orientation Project which is presented that evening.
Students and families now have access to view students' classes and grades on ParentVUE and StudentVUE. This is the place to view students' attendance, grades, course history, locker information and more.
I hope you all have a nice weekend!
Take care,
Maritza Torres
Attendance Information
Because Oceana places a high priority on instructional time, students are required to arrive on time for every session.
However, we do understand that absences occur every once in a while, and may be excused. To excuse an absence a parent or guardian should notify the school within 24 hours via the Attendance Office at 650-550-7314 or email OHSAttendance@jeffersonunion.net. If no phone call or email is received following an absence, the student must report directly to the Attendance Office with a note written and signed by a parent or guardian. Notes must include the following information:
- Student's full name
- Parent/Guardian telephone number
- Specific reason for absence (illness, doctor/dentist appt.)
- Dates and/or periods absent
- Signature of parent or legal guardian
School Planner
Students received their Oceana School Planner this week. In this planner, students can find Oceana's policy and procedures. It is also found on our website here.
Make Up Picture Day - August 22

Senior Sunrise
This morning, our senior class kicked off their final year in unforgettable style at the much-anticipated Senior sunrise event! As the sun rose this morning, the Class of 2024 gathered together for a truly special beginning to their senior year. The Senior sunrise was a perfect way to unite the Class of 2024, offering a moment of reflection and anticipation as they embark on their final year of high school. With new friendships, unforgettable experiences, and a year full of promise ahead, this event set the tone for an amazing senior year.
Here’s to a year filled with achievements, fun, and cherished memories! 🌟
Don't Know How to Start Applying for College?
Seniors planning to apply to college and not sure where to start? Check out Ms. Owyang's one stop shop for all things college applications and financial aid. There are clickable links on the slides to make things easy.
Additionally, Ms. Owyang will be meeting with all seniors individually in the months of August and September for their final graduation plan. What happens in a graduation plan:
1. Transcript evaluation to make sure seniors are on track to graduate
2. Discuss plans for post high school graduation
3. Students can ask questions and receive support with college/career plans
Encourage your students to start writing down their questions to come more prepared for their grad plan meeting!
