No school next week! Have a wonderful mid-winter break!
This week, as told by the Oaks:
We did a project about systems. Carmen wrote the morning message. The kindergarteners sand a new song at Community Gathering.
We got cards for MoMA. We went on a field trip to the Brooklyn Public Library to return our books and get new ones. Carmen and Rezia lost their teeth.

Literacy
In Writing Workshop we learned a strategy to spell fancy words that experts might use in their books. First you listen for and clap the syllables, then you write the sounds one syllable at a time, and make sure to use a vowel in each syllable. We worked on our class book about hermit crabs together to practice this new strategy.
In Reading Workshop we learned to continue using our tools for solving and checking hard words. We organized our tools into "Does that make sense?", "Does that sound right?", and "Does that look right?" tools.
At home: Encourage your child to write a non-fiction book based on your plans for the break.
Math
This week we compared repeating and nonrepeating sequences. We learned that the name of the part that repeats over and over in a repeating pattern is called the unit. We worked on identifying the unit of a pattern and figuring out how many units were in a pattern train.
At home: Practice creating patterns with your child and identifying the unit.
Upcoming trips
