Weekly Digest: Home Office Edition
Franklin College Student Academic Services
March 30 - April 3, 2020
We've made it two weeks distance-working. I hope everyone is okay. I have to say, I never thought I'd miss meetings as much as I do, and I'm enjoying the virtual time I've spent with some of you this week!
I've got some updates on how other campus units are continuing to serve students in the Information for Advisors section below. There's a lot of good stuff happening!
Also, please keep sending me home office and employee of the week photographs. (mjenn@uga.edu) Thanks to everyone who has sent some in, already. I've received so many that I'll publish a few every week. Keep them coming!
Please contact me at mjenn@uga.edu if you have suggestions or if there is anything you'd like me to include in the digest.

For Advisors
Important Information and Action Items for Advisors
Registration Dates Moved
- The ticketed registration dates for fall semester 2020 have been changed. The first ticketed registration date of fall 2020 will now be Tuesday, April 14. Please view all the new dates, listed in red, at the link below. Be sure to select the “2020-2021” tab.
- Emails to students will be sent no later than Wednesday, April 8.
- If you have any questions, please email the Registrar’s Office at regsupp@uga.edu.
Financial Aid Assistance for Students
Advisors, if you have a student with any kind of need, be it food, housing, money, etc., the link below is their first stop. Financial Aid has partnered with Student Care and Outreach, and if students fill out the form below, they are also connected with SCO who helps them get any other goods or services they need.
- Working with the Office of Student Financial Aid, emergency funds are available to provide limited, one-time financial assistance to enrolled students who are unable to meet immediate, essential expenses because of temporary hardship related to an emergency situation. Though having a current FAFSA on file is ideal, it is not required.
- In submitting your application, make sure you highlight any gap between the defined UGA Cost of Attendance (COA) and your income.
Jon and Brooks Hall and any technology/supply needs you might have
- Jon will visit Brooks Hall twice a week to check in on the building. If you have anything you need him to do regarding plant watering, food disposal, etc. please let him know. Also, if you have technology problems or ordering needs, let him know at (jonhanna@uga.edu)
- If you need to come to Brooks to pick up anything like your computer monitor, you can. You'll need your ID. We aren't supposed to work there, but we can pick up needed items.
Franklin Office of Transfer Academic Services Continuing Student Support
- The attached outreach flyer will be going out in our newsletter to students next week. OTAS welcomes advisors to help connect students who might be feeling isolated to our Transfer Ambassadors.
Experiential Learning Updates
- The Office of University Experiential Learning has created a website (https://el.uga.edu/policies/covid/) with resources that will hopefully be helpful to you. They will continue to add resources as they create them.
- Please be aware that some students whose EL requirement is currently marked as “in progress” may no longer fulfill the requirement due to canceled programs. The EL Office has reached out to activity directors with recommendations and is working diligently to find students who may be at risk of not fulfilling their requirement; especially those set to graduate in spring or summer. However, you will have better and more current information on your students’ individual situations and the EL Office asks that you keep an eye on these students. If they are unable to find a good solution, contact Kay Stanton at okay@uga.edu.
Potential Zoom Issue (from Julia Butler-Mayes)
- Outside of UGA, there have been reports of unauthorized users "Zoombombing” (joining active Zoom video conferencing sessions without invitation). Recently, a peer institution experienced Zoombombing by unwanted attendees in a Zoom classroom session that interrupted the lecture and disrupted learning.
- Read more about Zoombombing and how to guard against it on the Zoom blog: https://blog.zoom.us/wordpress/2020/03/20/keep-the-party-crashers-from-crashing-your-zoom-event/

Information for Advisors
Anthropology Updates (Thanks to Amber!)
Jen Birch sent us the following information about Anthropology Department happenings.
- A list of all courses being offered by Anthropology in summer and fall 2020.
- Pathways through the major. These pathways include guidance on what courses to take and in what order for students interested in the field of anthropology, in general as well as sub-disciplinary foci in biological anthropology, cultural anthropology and archaeology. We have printed cards that convey the same information in simplified format for when in-person advising resumes.
- Students entering their junior year should enroll in ANTH 3900 Professional Development for fall. This is a requirement for all anthropology majors
Updated Franklin College Silver Bullet Courses (Courses that fulfill multiple requirements)
- This list is also posted on the Advisor Resources and this page: https://osas.franklin.uga.edu/degree-information-and-policies

Division of Academic Enhancement Student Support Resources from Maggie Blanton in DAE
- Here is an InsideTrack website with resources on supporting students during this stressful period. In particular, I found this page useful: https://www.virusanxiety.com
- DAE at a Distance provides resources for academic success https://dae.uga.edu/dae_at_a_distance/ . At the bottom of the page, students can click on “let us know how we can help” to request additional support.
https://dae.uga.edu/successonlinelearning.pdf is a terrific guide to online learning.
- DAE, in collaboration with the MLC tech-lending program (MLC is closed), is checking out laptops to students (students can keep them until the end of the semester), and they provide support for Wi-Fi hotspots as well.
- When instruction resumes, all UGA students will be automatically enrolled in an elc course that contains 7 modules on academic success in an online environment - all faculty are also automatically enrolled in an elc course that was developed by the CTL to support their transition to online instruction. See more information in the "Information for Students" section below.
- Healthy habits for working from home – for faculty/staff
"Successful Advising Strategies for Supporting Student Academic Recovery” NACADA Webinar
- Below you will find a link to the event recording, which will be available to you through May 29, 2020 (an extension on our usual 30-day policy, due to the COVID-19 situation). As with live attendance, we ask that this link only be shared with others on your campus. (We will make closed captioning available as soon as we can. Please contact us if you have any difficulty with this feature.)

Additional UGA Library Resource Information
- The main library is closed, but students can ask questions via chat https://www.libs.uga.edu/news/covid19-libraries-hours
Students in need of computer or Wi-Fi access may request to use the technology in the Main Library by making an appointment at 706.542.3256.
This might not necessarily help advisors, but if you are connected with faculty, it could be good information for them.
The Library has online services for faculty/instructors and print book pick-up. The on-site computer access for instructors is still being determined but anyone that needs access to support instruction can contact the Main Library Access Services maincirc@uga.edu so that they know that there is a need.
- They will be keeping this guide up-to-date with their services. https://guides.libs.uga.edu/COVID19
Career Center Updates and Resources
- The Career Center is using Zoom "Breakout Rooms" for student meetings. I've attached a Guide to Virtual Drop-Ins Training Guide and zoom support for creating breakout-room in case it would help advisors: https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/206476313-Managing-Video-Breakout-Rooms.
Students can keep all their appointments with career consultants and can continue to make appointments via handshake, all appointments are conducted via zoom.
- Resume Books are sent out to employers for summer jobs and internships
Career Center is trying to keep all events (except for job fairs) and staff are working to convert to online format
Writing Center Updates
- The Writing Center is fully online now with asynchronous appointments, i.e. students submit written work and receive written feedback from consultants.
Starting next week, the Writing Center will announce open virtual office hours on Wednesdays.
