Weekend Update!
Friday September 6th, 2024
Good Afternoon!
Lots of wonderful things are happening in our classes each and every day- we encourage you to keep an open dialogue with your kids about all the great things they are learning throughout the school year. For example, today we had a football spirit day and had another safety drill. Ask them how it went!
Enjoy your weekend- go Hawks!

Scenes From Our Week!
Hillcrest Referendum
The 24-25 school year will be special for many reasons, one of which is the pending referendum on Election Day (11/5/24) in regards to the fate of a new Hillcrest Middle School. This project, if approved, will replace the current Hillcrest building that was built in 1966. Among other factors, new schools offer instructional spaces designed for today’s instructional strategies; improved indoor air-quality; enhanced school security measures; ADA compliance; modern technology; safer traffic pattern designs; more efficient utilities (potentially net zero); more natural light; and an environmentally conscious design. While new buildings are expensive, we were thrilled that the legislative session ending on May 8, 2024, specifically identified a 44% (instead of 24.29%) reimbursement rate for our Hillcrest Project. This means that Trumbull taxpayers would be responsible for $81.7 million of the $142 million project. This presentation provides an explanation of how and why Hillcrest was selected as the first project. The Educational Specifications (EdSpecs) of the new Hillcrest can be found here. I would encourage you to stay engaged and educated on the facts and details of this prospective project before casting your vote.
Esports Tryouts!
The Fall season of esports is quickly approaching! We will be having tryouts starting on Monday, September 16th after school in the Hillcrest planetarium. If your child is interested in trying out they should fill out this Google Form by Thursday, September 12th. This form is also posted in their grade level Google Classroom. Sixteen total students will be able to participate on our competitive esports team. This is a combined team of Hillcrest and Madison students. If your child is on the team they will be competing in Rocket League games after school on Mondays until 4:30 in the Middle School Esports League. There will also be scheduled practice time. Madison students will take a bus from Madison to Hillcrest after school on Mondays.
We will continue to have non-competitive gamer clubs offered at both middle schools. There is no fee to attend these after school clubs and no fee to participate. More information about these after school opportunities will be made available soon as part of our club offerings. For more information about our high school and middle school esports teams please visit our website: https://sites.google.com/trumbullps.net/trumbull-esports If you have questions about our esports program please contact Technology Integration Specialist - Michaela Durand at mdurand@trumbullps.org If you have questions about tryouts please email Head Coach Bryant Recker at bryantrecker@gmail.com
We are very proud that our middle school esports team has already won two national titles! We welcome back head coach, Bryant Recker, a former THS student and collegiate esports competitor, to our coaching staff. Coach Recker is a Grand Champion III in Rocket League (top 0.06% of players worldwide) and is passionate about coaching. He graduated from McGill University in Montréal and is excited to help grow our esports program here in Trumbull!
Message from the Transportation Department
For the safety of our students and to avoid any overcrowding issues, students should only ride the bus they are assigned to unless issued an exception by the transportation department. Drivers are instructed not to admit any student to their bus that is not assigned or has not been given an exception from Transportation. Exceptions should be for child care reasons or emergencies and not used for playdates. Using a school bus for anything other than home to school transportation is prohibited.
iReady Assessment
The Trumbull Public Schools use an independent diagnostic assessment, iReady, to provide data on the growth and needs of our students in numeracy and literacy. All middle school students will take these assessments three times per year. On Thursday September 7th, all students will take the math iReady diagnostic assessment. Please remind your children to bring in earbuds/headphones for this assessment, and to charge their Chromebooks the night before. Click here to see the block schedule for iReady. Thank you!
Back Parking Lot
The traffic in the back parking lot has steadily increased throughout the week, which I am guessing is a result of the delays we have seen with buses. If you are dropping your children off, I would ask that you please remember the following:
1. Please be patient and drive at a slow speed to be mindful of pedestrians in the parking lot,
2. Please keep the traffic flowing by dropping your kids off and pulling through the rest of the line,
3. Please maintain one line of traffic, not two, as to not inadvertently block teachers from parking in their assigned spaces.
4. Please stay to the right with your vehicles, as to not block the driveway.

Cell Phones
If you have not done so already, please review this letter that was sent out regarding our expectations regarding cell phones. Overall, our students did an AMAZING job keeping their devices away to stay connected with their classes and each other!

What Are We Reading at Hillcrest?
1.This week, our staff read this article which shares strategies on how to help students build their capacity in the area of writing.
2. Mrs. Laird and I read a host of books this summer! Most recently, we read Boredom Busters by Katie Powell, which provides a number of instructional strategies on how to keep students engaged during classroom lessons.
Drop Off/Pick Up Procedure
Safety
We strive on a daily basis to provide a safe environment for all students, and to promote safe practices with them as well. We will continue to educate students about what safe behavior looks like and what our expectations are for safe behaviors. We see this as a partnership with our families. I ask that you please remind your children to be kind to each other, to keep their hands to themselves, and that there is never an acceptable time or moment to use slurs of any kind. This article from the American Psychological Association gives families tips on how to potentially address way to have these discussions.
