Principals' Greeting
Hiteon Community,
It has been a great start of our school year. Our favorite part of this year has been joining the community as it comes together to enrich our students’ experiences both at school and outside of school. Art Literacy, support in the classroom, outreach opportunities, Popcorn Friday, Trunk or Treat, and International Walk and Roll day are just some of the many ways in which our community has come together. A huge thank you goes to all who have volunteered their time or participated in these events!
This morning our students attended an assembly focused on “caring”. We see examples of caring students every day. Some of our older students have embraced their leadership skills by walking younger students to the bus, helping set up chairs, making posters, etc. The skill to become caring humans is one that is practiced daily as students learn to play together out at recess, learn together in the classroom, and look for opportunities to help one another. Just as our adult community has come together, so help our students!
With the new cold wet weather, please make sure your students are wearing clothes appropriate for the weather. If you need assistance in providing your child(ren) with coats or warm clothes, please contact Stephanie Godfrey at stephanie_godfrey@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Have a GREAT weekend!
Best Regards,
Janet Maza, Principal
Jenny Read-Emslie - Assistant Principal

ATTENDANCE
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:45 – Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
According to BSD policy absences that are not medical in nature, such as vacations, will be marked as unexcused absence.
The principal has the authority to excuse students for absences due to illness, educational/occupational interviews, quarantine, bereavement or serious illness in the family, inclement weather, religious instruction, religious or cultural observances or emergencies. Physicians, psychiatrists, psychologists, dentists and similar professionals may request permission for students’ excused absences.
339.065 Estimates of attendance; irregular attendance; excused absences. (1) In estimating regular attendance for purposes of the compulsory attendance provisions of ORS 339.005 to 339.030, 339.040 to 339.125, 339.137 and 339.420, the principal or teacher shall consider all unexcused absences. Eight unexcused one-half day absences in any four-week period during which the school is in session shall be considered irregular attendance.
(2)(a) An absence may be excused by a principal or teacher if the absence is caused by:
(A) The pupil’s sickness, including the mental or behavioral health of the pupil;
(B) The sickness of some member of the pupil’s family; or
(C) An emergency.
REMINDERS:
Tardy: School begins promptly at 8:00am. Students that are not seated at their desk at 8:00am are considered tardy. Unless they are in the cafeteria having breakfast. Unfortunately, this means that students that are in vehicles in the parking lot are still considered late if they enter the building at 8:01am.
Early Arrival: For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school before 7:45am there is no adult supervision prior to 7:45.
Dismissal: Again, for student safety, all students must be picked up from school at dismissal time 2:35pm. There is no supervision after 2:35. Unless the student is involved in a supervised after-school activity. Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35pm must have parent supervision.

Cell Phone Use at School
Hiteon community, please help us ensure that students with their cell phones and phone watches at Hiteon follow the expectations outlined below.
Many students, especially in our older grades, have their cell phones or phone watches with them. They often use it before or after school to communicate with their families. This is understandable and acceptable. However, we need to ensure students are not using their phone watches, cell phones or calling family during school hours. It is important if a student is not feeling well or needs something brought to school that, those calls go through the main school office.
Cell phones/phone watches may be used on school grounds before school and after school.
During the instructional day, cell phones/phone watches must remain out of sight and in silent mode.
If students need to place an emergency phone call during the school day, they should request to go to the main office to use an office phone.
Thank you all for your assistance in reminding your children about only using their cell phones or phone watches before or after school.

Parking Lot Safety
The start of the school year has been great! It is that time of year when we need to address the car pick-up and drop-off expectations at Hiteon.
We are beginning to see unsafe behaviors at the car drop-off and pick-up at the front entrance. We have parents exiting their vehicles while in the car drop-off line. Students need to exit their cars on the passenger side only. When the driver gets out to help the student, it backs up the car line. We are witnessing other drivers become impatient and drive around the car and people that have exited their car. This is very unsafe with other cars passing close by on the left-hand side of the parked car. We do not want anyone to accidentally get hit due to these behaviors.
We ask that all students exit and enter their vehicle from the curb side (passenger side) only. Drivers, please do not leave your vehicle during drop off and pick up times. If your child requires you to exit your vehicle for drop off, you need to park in the parking lot and walk them to the front of the building. If you need to exit your vehicle during a pick-up time, we ask you to park your car and pick your child up in the back of the building (playground).
We must keep our parking lot safe for everyone, and we appreciate your cooperation.

Hearing Testing for Kinder to 2nd Grade
Hearing screening will be conducted by BSD's Health Assistants for students in Kindergarten through 2nd Grade on Tuesday, November 29th. A second screening will be conducted a couple of weeks later for those students who did not pass the initial screening. Parents will only be notified of results after a second failed hearing screening. Students in specialized classrooms will not participate in the school wide screening except by teacher/parent request.
Please notify the office or your student(s) teacher if you prefer that your child not participate in the screening. Students who are absent during school screenings can be screened individually with parent verbal request and consent on another date.
If possible, it is helpful to the screeners if long hair is tied back.

Hiteon's Walking School Bus for Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day
Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is Wednesday, November 16th. Join Hiteon Elementary students and families, as well as students from around the country, in a walk for justice and take steps to build a better future where racism, and all forms of bullying, have no place.
There will be three Walking School Bus options to celebrate Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day. All Walking School Buses will depart from their locations at 7:30am. Feel free to join us along the route as well!
Ruby Bridges made history at 6 years old when she integrated William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans and became a national icon for the civil rights movement in 1960.
Learn more about Ruby Bridges by walking to your nearest Beaverton City Library branch (closed 11/11 for the holiday). You can use your Student Library Card to check out books about Ruby Bridges. New students to BSD this year will receive their Student Library Card by mail before winter break.

Beaverton School District Inclement Weather Information
When we have inclement weather, school schedules could be affected. School closure or delayed start decisions will typically be communicated to media outlets and posted on the district website, ParentSquare and social media by 5:30 a.m. The District makes decisions based on the ability to operate school buses safely, the ability of parents and students to drive safely, and the ability of students to walk safely. Decisions are made for the entire District. However, we encourage families to make transportation and attendance decisions for their children based on their own assessment of travel conditions at their locations.
For the latest inclement weather information:
● Check the district website. A page pop-up will be posted if there’s a change in school operations.
● The BSD Public Safety webpage has information about inclement weather procedures and
snow routes. Log on and click “Inclement Weather Information.”
● Follow us on:
o Twitter @BeavertonSD
o Facebook @BeavertonSchoolDistrict
o Instagram @beavertonsd
● Tune into media outlets for updates.

Fall Safety Tips
Every year thousands of people are injured due to daylight savings time changes and the changing of the seasons. Autumn means all road users should be extra alert.
Wear bright reflective clothing when walking or rolling.
Don’t assume people driving will see you. Make eye contact before crossing in front of vehicles.
Be alert! Keep eyes and ears open, especially while crossing the street.
Cyclists should make sure to have lights and wear helmets – it is the law.
Driving or biking? Use extra caution and slow down in the dark and rain. And remember, do not text and drive!

2021-2022 BSD School Profiles
A link to our 2021-22 school profile is posted on our school webpage under About Us>School Profile>Oregon Report Card. The 2021-22 district profile is posted on the district report card webpage.
State report cards began when the 1999 Oregon Legislature passed a law requiring every public school and district to receive a report from the Oregon Department of Education about how they are performing overall. The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), signed by President Obama on December 10, 2015, replaces the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act and affords states greater flexibility. ESSA encourages schools and educators to innovate and create systems that address local needs. As a part of this work, the Oregon Department of Education redesigned the School and District report cards to engage and inform families about their school’s approach to learning, academic and extracurricular offerings, and student performance. Reports cards also serve as an important tool for continuous improvement planning by local and state policymakers, in conjunction with the communities they serve.
The 2021-22 school and district profiles include all available data not impacted by the state’s response to the COVID-19. As part of the federal response to COVID-19, all students in our school were eligible for free school meals last year. As a result, our Free/ Reduced Price Lunch percentage is reported as >95%.
At <school name> WE are committed to using this information to help tailor our school improvement plans and academic programs to meet the needs of every student. You’ll find our current school improvement plan here: <insert link to school learning plan>. During the year I will communicate with you frequently about student achievement and programs in place at our school to foster student learning and success.
If you have questions about our report card or would like a print copy, please contact me. You may also have suggestions for improvements. Please share them! Thank you!
¡Muchas Gracias!
