Principals' Update
12/8/24
Greetings MacArthur Families,
We hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving with your families! This week back brought a winter blast and reminded us quickly of the weather to come. We prioritize outdoor play and utilize the available surfaces for outdoor recess whenever possible. This also serves as our annual reminder that we want the students to come dressed for outdoor recess each day with coats, hats, and gloves. Our message to students is if your adult sent you with a coat to school, we expect the students to wear it. We use the child care weather watch to determine indoor and outdoor recess across the district. If it is in the "red," we stay inside, if it is in the yellow or green, we go outside. With the additional clothing needed during these chilly months, we do ask that families continue to label their children's clothing to ensure items are more easily returned. Families are urged over the next two weeks to visit the lost and found. We will be donating all remaining items after 12/20.
MacArthur School Alumnus Conner Rosenblatt is sponsoring a Winter Weather Drive to collect non-perishable food, clothing, and hygiene products to benefit the Healthy Waltham Food Pantry. Donations will be collected through 12/13/24. Please see the fliers below for more information. Thank you to all who have already donated.
Our Winter Concert is less than two weeks away! Join us on Thursday, December 19th at 9:15am for Grades K-2 and 10:15 am for Grades 3-5. This year's Winter Concert theme is Friends and Family. In Art Class with Ms. Smidt, students in grades 1, 4 and 5 have been learning how to draw figures or furthering their figure drawing abilities. In honor of this year’s concert theme, MacArthur artists have made self-portraits with outstretched arms. The figures have been mounted to show all students holding hands to honor our theme. You can view the artwork before and after the concert. It will be displayed around the gym on concert day.
Please note: Term 1 Report Cards for Grades 2-5 will be sent home with all students on Friday, December 13th. Kindergarten and Grade 1 receive their report cards on a semester basis (i.e. twice a year), where Grades 2-5 receive three report cards per year. We appreciate your review of these documents in support of your children't continued growth.
Our Book Fair was a huge success once again! Thank you to Mrs. South and our dedicated team of volunteers behind the scenes for making it happen. We are so appreciative to all who donated to our MacArthur E-Wallet again this year. These Eagle Bucks went a long way to make sure students were able to get a book.
Thank you to all of who attended and supported the PTO Holiday Shop as well. We know how busy this time of year is and we appreciate those who came to enjoy this December tradition.
Thanks for reading our weekly update! We wish you a great start to the week.
In Partnership,
Mr. Kmiec and Mr. Howes

Attendance Update - 11/24/24
1) Absence Communication Phone Line: If your child is ill and needs to be absent, please call 781-314-5722 and leave a message on Ms. Santana's voicemail to record your absence. We are collecting data on illnesses and why absences occur to best support the school community as a whole.
2) School Required Communication: As we approach Day 60 of the school year on Tuesday, we will be preparing our next round on attendance letters to inform you that your child has reached 5 absences. This required communication shares the importance of consistent attendance and invites you to share more information with us about any barriers your children are facing to get to school.
3) November Attendance Update: Currently, our average daily attendance rate is 95.9%. This slightly surpasses the district elementary school average of 95.6%. Our 1st graders are setting the pace with 96.9% average daily attendance. Thank you for prioritizing your children's school attendance and only keeping them home when they are too sick to attend school.
