Website & Communication
If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend bookmarking it and referring back to it as needed. I will be updating it at least weekly, if not more frequently as the season progresses. Included in it is the most up-to-date calendar, the marching band handbook, a, FAQ, a listing of student leadership, sound files of the music for our field show, the band camp schedule, and more.
I will send out a weekly email every week the upcoming week's pertinent/relevant information. These can all be located on the Penns Valley Band Website as well.
If you need to get ahold of me, email is my primary form of communication: mmarini@pennsvalley.org. I will do my best to respond in a timely manner.
BAND CAMP REMINDERS, SUGGESTIONS, AND UPDATES
Entrances/Parking
If you haven't been by the high school recently, the building is under heavy construction. The entire front parking lot is gone, the bus loop is unusable, and the fields outside the bandroom have been completely dug up...
- For all practices, students, and parents/guardians dropping students off, should park in the parking lot in the back of the high school and either walk around the back-side of the building directly to the band room door, (door #5) OR if someone is there, can be let in at door #7. The building is still get cleaned/waxed/updated so students should avoid any unnecessary time in hallways of the building.
- The construction in front of the building will be ongoing throughout the school year so this is a system we'll have to learn to live with and work under.
Weather & Things to Bring
This has been the hottest summer in recorded history so far... Be prepared.
- It is essential you bring AND drink lots of water throughout band camp.
- It is essential you bring AND wear lots of sunscreen throughout band camp.
- We will be spending 20+ hours outside this week in direct sunlight. This is not the time to be tough or negligent. Wear (school-appropriate) clothing for the heat, including closed-toe shoes (sneakers) and socks. No flip-flops or sandals.
- Students should bring with them each day: their instrument/flag/baton, appropriate clothing for outdoor activity in extreme heat, music, a pencil, lots of water, and lots of sunscreen.
If it isn't thunder storming/lighting-ing outside, assume we will be outside for practice...
Times
- Band camp is August 7-16th this year. Each day will have slightly different times, depending on the section you are in. All that information is included at the top of this Weekly Update, as well as in the 2023 Band Camp Schedule August 7 - 16 pdf on the website.
- As my high school band director taught me when I was a teenager, "To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is unacceptable." Plan to be at the school 15 minutes before any event begins.
Lunch
- Each day of the week of August 7th, there will be a lunch break from 11:30am to 1pm.
- Students are responsible for their own lunch.
- Students are welcome to eat lunch at the high school or leave and come back. Students who stay need to either stay in the band room/hallway.
Dinner
- On Monday 8/7, Wednesday 8/9, and Thursday 8/10 Band Front students will have a dinner break from 5pm to 6pm.
- Students are responsible for their own dinner.
- Students are welcome to eat dinner at the high school or leave and come back. Students who stay need to either stay in the band room/hallway.
