MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL, DR. ROCHE:
Supporting Our Students Through the Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, it’s a time of joy and connection for many, but it can also bring unique challenges for our students and their families. Stress, changes in routines, or financial and social pressures can sometimes make this time of year overwhelming.
We want to remind everyone that it’s okay to not feel okay—and help is always available.
Here are a few ways we can support your student during this season:
- Counseling Services: Our school counselors are here to talk with students about any challenges they may be facing. Encourage your student to visit the counseling office or contact us to schedule a meeting.
- Mental Health Resources: Our social worker can help connect you to mental health resources to ensure students have access to professional support if needed.
- Community Resources: If your family could use extra support with food, clothing, or other essentials during the holidays, please reach out—we can connect you with local programs.
As a family, you can also help your student by:
- Maintaining open communication about their feelings and experiences.
- Creating space for restful, low-stress activities.
- Encouraging healthy habits like sleep, balanced meals, and physical activity.
If you notice changes in your student’s mood or behavior that concern you, don’t hesitate to contact us or seek support through the National Lifeline call 988 or text HOME to 74741. Together, we can make sure every student feels cared for and supported.
Thank you for being a part of our MVHS community. Let’s continue to look out for one another this holiday season.
FROM THE DESK OF ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS AND DEAN OF STUDENTS:
Dear 9th Grade Families and Caregivers,
I am excited to share some positive news regarding our freshman class! Thanks to the commitment to and the first round of interventions, we’re already seeing improvement in many 9th graders' grades and engagement.
As we move forward, we’re gearing up for the second level of interventions to build on this momentum. This next phase will involve targeted strategies (Tier 2) to keep our freshmen on track and help them develop the skills needed to succeed as they continue adjusting to high school. I have already shared details with 9th-grade teachers, but mainly the interventions consist of picking up students from their last period, and taking them to their teachers (classes in which they did not earn a passing grade) at the end of the day so that they can take advantage of pupil-patron time.
These interventions will provide students with opportunities to grasp the assignment directions they missed during classes and some additional tutoring if needed. Our AP and support teams will again be available to assist teachers in maximizing these sessions. We will stay in the classes (when possible) monitoring that students are there to learn and grasp what they missed.
If your student is failing a class (Please check Skyward), these interventions will be of the most assistance for them to earn all passing grades. Interventions will take place from November 18 to December 20th. Students who have Fs will be picked up from their last-period classes and receive academic support. Transportation is available for them to go home without concerns at 4 pm.
Respectfully,
Dr. San Martin, VP/ 9th Grade Administrator

We have five full bee suits! A permission slip is available by the hives and should be dropped off with Mr. Engman in New Main 304. As a diverse, inclusive, multicultural, and multilingual school, Mount Vernon High School wants to acknowledge as many cultural celebrations in our community as possible. A peaceful and productive society is dependent on both diversity and inclusion. Our Diversity Calendar can provide valuable opportunities to celebrate and embrace the richness of our differences. DEI Calendar November 2024
November marks National Native American Heritage Month which honors the cultures, traditions, and histories of all Native people living in the United States.
October 31 – Nov 4 – Diwali
This Festival of Lights in the Hindu faith is a time when different deities are praised. It symbolizes the fight for good over evil.
World Diabetes Day – November 14
Nearly a century after the discovery of insulin, this World Health Day raises challenges that those living with diabetes face daily. Today, we focus on advocating for the need for access to diabetic care throughout the world.
International Day For Tolerance – November 16
Established in 1996, this day promotes respect for the world’s cultures, languages, and religions. Today is a day to educate the general public about the need for universal human rights for all humans.
International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day – November 19
Also known as Survivor Day, the event is sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, a program that unites survivors globally. Stand alongside survivors and their families as we come together to understand through shared experiences today.
November 20 – Transgender Day of Remembrance
Remember those lost due to violence or murder because of transphobia on this annual remembrance.
Native Women’s Equal Pay Day – November 21
Today, we learn that Native women must work nearly 23 months to earn the same salary as white, non-Hispanic men do in one year. This wage disparity is enlightening and deserves public awareness. Educating others about this discrepancy ensures that the pay gap fight continues worldwide every year.
November 24 – Native American Heritage Day
Take time to pay respects to Native Americans who have contributed so much to American history. This day also encourages schools to increase their understanding of Native American history
