NMSHS PANTHER POST
September 15, 2023
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE - Mr. Goodrich
Nederland Middle-Senior HS Community,
Go Buffs, Go Rams. The college football world will be focusing on Boulder, Colorado for the big in-state rivalry game. While everyone is not into football or attending school sporting events, almost everyone is into their schools that they attended, played for, or even worked for. School and organizational pride are important. Ultimately people want to belong to something and have a positive affiliation. Being a part of something can provide security and comfort.
Nederland schools and the Nederland community are unique. We are a smaller, more isolated area as opposed to the towns and communities down below. What is positive about our geography and location is that we know and see our neighbors and people throughout the community often: at the B&F, at Blue Moon Bakery, at ACE Hardware, the Co-Op, or the gas station. That familiarity is special and allows us to find connection, purpose and a sense of belonging.
At Nederland Middle-Senior High School our students have the benefit of knowing their fellow students for many years, some from Kindergarten through their senior year in high school. The bonds are strong and the connections can be powerful and supportive for young people. Given the disruptiveness of the pandemic years, we are wanting to find the things that connect our students and to reignite and give purpose to our work. This year the administrative team, teachers and staff are looking to create a vision for our school that is true and enduring. Something that we can say, yes, that is what we want for our students and that is something that should be a focus for a long time.
In addition to strong academic learning and high levels of student engagement and involvement in school activities and events, we are wanting to develop and create a coherent approach that focuses on belonging and social and emotional awareness. We want to support the idea that all students matter, and build the capacity of students to interact and thrive in our school community in a healthy and supportive way forward. Throughout the school year we will be working with students, teachers and parents to look at where we are and where we need to go to establish a school identity of belonging and a build toward a place of pride and spirit in the school and in the community. I encourage parents to attend principal coffees, town-hall meetings, PTA and School Accountability meetings to contribute to the discussions about how we can best support our students and help to make our school the best it can be.
Have a great weekend!

Raising Digitally Responsible Youth
Hello All,
In this day and age our youth seem to be more and more attached to their digital devices. This is why I wanted to share the International Center for Digital Threat Assessments Parent's Guide to Raising Digitally Responsible Youth with the Community.
Hopefully, this handy guide will equip you or refresh you with the knowledge that parents/guardians/caregivers need to stay in the loop regarding the most popular applications and trends that our students are using.
Access to the link and the accompanying download are free to use.

Help the Nederland Loquations get to NYC!
Our Nederland Loquations have a life-changing opportunity to perform at Carnegie Hall under the direction of Dr. Elizabeth Swanson from the University of Colorado at Boulder on March 25th, 2024.
We are so honored to represent Nederland by singing at the most prestigious concert venue in the country. This fundraiser will pay a little less than half of the cost for the students, but it will go a long way in helping the students get to NYC. Please consider a donation to help us get to Carnegie Hall. Donate Here
Panther Parents PTA
We had our first Panther Parents PTA meeting of the year last Wednesday at Busey’s. It was a fantastic turnout and we had record families join the PTA! A poll of the those who attended revealed that the preference is to meet in person, but switch to online meetings as needed (ie, inclement weather).
We would still love more voices advocating for our kids and our school! Go to our website (https://neh.bvsd.org/school-life/panther-parents-pta) and find the Buy Now button to join. You will also find information about the PTA, a schedule of meetings (1st Wed of every month), and all minutes from past meetings. If you have any questions for the PTA or topics for future meetings, please send an email to nmshspta@gmail.com. We already have a financial vote that needs to take place so if you’d like to have a voice in the PTA’s spending, sign up today!
Homecoming BBQ 2023
The PTA is hosting the annual Homecoming BBQ on Saturday Sept 30. This is a fun event that happens at the school before and during the boys’ home soccer game and it’s open to the public. We need several volunteers to make this happen smoothly (you do not need to be a PTA member in order to volunteer for the BBQ). Please sign up for a shift here https://bvsd.helpatschools.com/schools/45/events/9506 (you are welcome to sign up for more than 1 shift!)
It’s going to be a great year at NMSHS!

BVSD News
Reminder: No School September 25, despite BVSD menu items that day
Monday, September 25 there is no school for students as it is a district professional development day. The BVSD printed menu calendar lists menu items on this day in error, but there is no school that day. Other menu items for the remaining month are listed correctly. View the BVSD calendar.
‘One Chip Challenge’ awareness and risk
The BVSD Health Services team has asked us to share that nationally, the recent Paqui “One Chip Challenge” has resulted in many young people requiring emergency care. BVSD has recently had to send multiple students home from schools due to adverse effects of eating this product.
The challenge involves eating an extremely spicy chip and then waiting as long as possible after consuming the chip before eating or drinking to relieve the burning - and some share videos of the challenge on social media. On September 6th, the New York Times reported a 14-year-old boy died hours after consuming the product. The next day, The Washington Post reported the company announced they were pulling the product from stores.
Please consider talking to your student about this product/challenge and the serious side-effects that may occur with its use or similar products. Contact your school nurse with any questions.
School breakfast and lunch are now FREE for BVSD students. Other important cost savings available for families who qualify and complete the Free and Reduced Lunch Application
Each student will be allowed one complete breakfast and one complete lunch for free every day. In order to receive them for free, students must take an entire meal. For example, taking only a yogurt at breakfast or a piece of fruit at lunch would not be free.
Lunch includes an unlimited salad bar. Second entrees and a la carte items (like sides of fruit, salad bar, or milk WITHOUT a full lunch) must still be paid for. Students who would like to purchase those items can still use available meal account funds.
Even though lunch is now free, it is still very important that families complete the free and reduced meal application, as it waives and reduces fees district-wide for families, can impact transportation for some families, and impacts important funding for individual schools.
It also qualifies families for a 50% reduction in Lifelong Learning tuition, and waived tuition for BVSD Online classes (excluding the $50 registration fee). Child Care families will continue to apply for financial assistance through the Child Care Assistance Program (CCAP).
Visit the Free and Reduced Price Meals webpage for information on applying for free or reduced meals or contact your school directly.
