This Week in Kindergarten...
Happy New Year!
Students came back from break brimming with excitement about their vacations and eager to start the new year. We began the week with a story about woodland creatures who make resolutions and talked about how it is good to set goals for yourself. We learned that a resolution is a promise you make to yourself to be better or to help others. Each kindergartner decided on a goal and wrote it down.
Kid Town, USA
Kid Town will officially open in Kindergarten next week and the kids (or citizens) have been preparing by working in the Kid Town Factory this week. They each created bracelets for the jewelry store, pets for the pet shop, and flowers for the florist. They also filled out job applications and took photos for their ID badges. Each day, we will have a town meeting prior to Kid Town. During this time, we discuss topics such as what a community needs, how we can be responsible citizens of our community, and ways we can live, work, and play together. Thank you for sending in wallets and paper tubes to help us get started! If you have not yet sent in a wallet for your child, please do so by Monday. Feel free to send in more tubes as you collect them as well.
Snowflakes and Symmetry
For kids, the prospect of snow is always an exciting part of winter. So, in math this week, we combined that enthusiasm with learning about symmetry and created snowflakes. Students began by learning about a line of symmetry and how each side is like a reflection in a mirror. Then, they explored the concept further with pattern blocks. Finally, they each created a unique snowflake for display. What a beautiful sight!
