ARI Region 4 Lunch and Learn Sessions
ARI Lunch and Learns for Administrators- As outlined in the Alabama Literacy Act (ALA), the ARI local and regional literacy specialists must be clear and intentional in working with the school administrators to create a strategic plan for coaching that includes coaching and mentoring teachers daily (p.10). This strategic plan for coaching will assist in a seamless transition to the 2021 Alabama Course of Study: English Language Arts (ELA COS). Each Lunch and Learn will include time to explore a specific area of foundational reading from our 2021 ELA COS and support administrators in ensuring all educators in our buildings have a clear understanding of how the science of reading is explicitly incorporated to enable K-3 students to master grade-level content.

OPPORTUNITIES FROM OUR REGIONAL INITIATIVES
AMSTI
AMSTI has added an additional math session of Counting Collections and Number Talks on December 7 at the UA/UWA Regional In-Service Center.
The link to the Google form application is: https://forms.gle/wTvXe2SwzUYZgPnm9
Counting Collections: Counting is fundamental to learning mathematics in elementary school, supporting the development of a deep understanding of numbers, and providing the core foundation for understanding place value. It is the basis upon which operations with whole numbers, estimation, and algebraic thinking build. Through the powerful instructional routine of Choral Counting and Counting Collections, students are engaged in rich mathematics, which can be utilized to pursue a broad range of mathematical goals throughout elementary school. By increasing the magnitude of the collection or by including packaged items, students can explore several mathematical concepts and develop a deep, conceptual understanding of quantity.
Together we will explore Number Talks and examine why they are an effective tool for the K-2 mathematics classroom. In this session you will see examples of Number Talks in action as well as practice them yourself. You will be equipped to implement this important mathematical routine in your classroom.
Please contact Sara McGee (smcgee@ua.edu) if you need other professional learning needs.
