SBIRT, January 6th
Holliston High School's health staff will begin a health screening called SBIRT on Monday, January 6, 2025. SBIRT stands for Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. SBIRT is used to screen for alcohol, nicotine, tobacco, and other drug use. This health screening is required by Massachusetts law.
Students in grade 9 will participate in this screening, which takes about 5-10 minutes. School health staff will have one-on-one conversations with students. They will ask students about alcohol, nicotine, tobacco, or other drug use over the past year. Staff will then talk with each student about supporting their overall health, safety, and success in school. If the student needs more assessment or support, health staff will work with the student and/or their parent/guardian.
The questions asked during this screening are listed here in the CRAFFT screening tool. Please read this tool, which the Department of Public Health has approved.
Please note:
- Screening results are recorded. No information identifying a student is kept (for example, name or date of birth).
- Screening results will not go into the student’s school record.
- Screening results will not be shared without the permission of the student or their parent/guardian. However, results may be shared in the case of immediate medical emergency or when required by state law.
As with any school health screening, you can opt your child out of this process. Students themselves may also choose not to take part. If you do not want your child to participate in this screening or you have questions, contact Valerie Camiel, School Counseling Administrative Assistant, at camielv@holliston.k12.ma.us by Friday, January 3, 2025.
Parents and guardians can help their children make healthy choices. One important way to prevent alcohol and drug use is to talk with them about your thoughts and expectations. Some resources that can help these discussions include:
We appreciate your cooperation in supporting the students of Holliston High School.
Program of Studies Presentation, January 21st
On Tuesday 21st, we will present our program of studies and share information about Holliston High School. This year we will offer 2 presentations. Our first will take place from 6:30 - 7:30 and will geared towards families with students entering into grade 9 for the 25-26 School year. Our 2nd presentation will take place from 7:30 - 8:30 and will be geared towards current high school students. HHS principal, David List and counseling department leader, Elisa Taylor, will present information about courses and the progression of students through HHS. After the presentation, students will be available for tours of the building.
Science (9th Grade) MCAS Information
MCAS testing for Science will take place on February 4th and 5th. This is for Grade 9 students who completed a science course during Semester 1 or students in grades 10-12 who have not yet taken or have not yet passed the science MCAS.
As outlined in our Program of Studies, passing the MCAS remains a graduation requirement, and all students are required by the state to take the Science (9th grade), Math (10th grade), and ELA (10th grade) MCAS assessments.
Please mark your calendars and reach out to counselors if you have any questions.
Challenge Day Sign Up, February 11th
We are excited to announce that HHS, in partnership with the PTO, will again host the "Challenge Day" program for 100 10th and 11th grade students on February 11th. HHS, RAMS, and MIller Choral Concert, Tuesday, December 10th
Please join us for the Winter Choral Concert featuring performances from the Holliston High School Chorus, RAMS Chorus and Miller Chorus. The concert will take place in the Holliston High School auditorium and begin at 7:00 pm.
Dismissal Procedures
We hope to clarify and remind everyone of our dismissal procedures to ensure smooth communication and accurate attendance records.
If your student needs to be dismissed during the school day, please contact the main office directly. While students and parents may make prior arrangements for dismissal, it is essential that the office is informed. Without this communication, it may appear that the student has left school without permission, which would lead to a follow up conversation with an assistant principal about cutting classes.
For situations where a student is not feeling well:
If a student contacts you to say they feel unwell and you decide to dismiss them, please contact the main office. In this case, the student will not be evaluated by the school nurse prior to leaving, as the dismissal will already have been authorized by you.
If your student arrives at school feeling well but begins to feel unwell during the day and you would like them evaluated, they should visit the nurse’s office. Based on the evaluation, the nurse will determine whether it is best for your student to remain in school or be dismissed.
- If you are certain you wish to dismiss your student regardless of the nurse’s evaluation, please contact the main office directly instead of the nurse’s office to facilitate the process.
We appreciate your cooperation in helping us maintain accurate attendance records and ensuring that all students’ needs are addressed appropriately. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please feel free to reach out to the main office.

Registration for Term 2 and Spring semester courses is January 1 - March 1, 2025.

**Please disregard this message if it does not apply to you or your student(s). AP (Advanced Placement) Exams are relevant if your child is enrolled in AP courses which are typically offered to juniors and seniors (AP Physics 1 and AP European History are available to sophomores, as well.) Sandy Hook Promise: Anonymous Reporting System
On October 18th, Holliston High School (HHS) trained students in the Sandy Hook. Say Something Anonymous Reporting System (SS-ARS). This initiative teaches students, teachers, and administrators to identify warning signals and potential threats across social media, school premises, or the community. Participants learned through video training about the prevalence of school violence and self-harm, the impact they can have by reporting concerns, and how to report a tip to a trusted adult or by using the anonymous reporting system.
Specifically, the program aims to educate both students and adults to:
- Recognize at-risk behaviors in friends and classmates at school and in their local community.
- Take every sign and signal seriously and act quickly to get help by talking to a trusted adult or report it anonymously to the SS-ARS 24/7/365 Crisis Center via a mobile app, website, or telephone hotline.
For more information about Sandy Hook Promise, please click here.
Intruder Response Drill, October 25th
On October 25th, the High School will be taking part in an Intruder Response Drill. The drill will involve providing the students with scenarios and having those scenarios discussed in their classroom. Throughout the year we will run various drills with the students to ensure all students are prepared in case of an emergency.
We understand that these drills can be unsettling for some students. Our staff will take care to explain the importance of the drill and to support students throughout the process. Additionally, our counselors will be available to provide any necessary support following the drill.
If you have any questions about the drill, please reach out to David List.
Senior Dress-Up Day, Thursday, October 31st
Senior Dress-Up day Thursday, October 31st and we are excited to see the creative costumes the seniors have put together.
Seniors: make sure you put time, effort and creativity into your costume because we all love to see the amazing costumes you come up with. However, here are some restrictions to make sure good judgement is used:
No masks or other items that obscure the face or could make identification of the student difficult.
Nothing that could pose a potential safety risk to self or others, i.e. roller blades, skateboards, scooters, bicycles, stilts, long sticks or toy/play weapons
Nothing that resembles a weapon, handgun, rifle or other firearm
Nothing of a provocative, revealing nature - dress should be appropriate for an educational setting
No costumes intending to resemble past or present staff members
Nothing that demeans or makes fun of anyone with a disability or jests at social, cultural or religious groups
Use good judgment please! Let's keep this a really fun day for everyone
End of Term 1
Today, October 31st, marks the end of Term 1 for students. Teachers are working to finalize grades. Grades will be released on November 11th after 3 p.m., students and parents will be able to access grades through PowerSchool.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding your student's grades, please reach out directly to your student's teacher. We are looking forward to a successful term 2.
State Mandated Health Screenings
State mandated health screenings will begin on November 6th and 7th and continue on an ongoing basis until they are completed.
Screenings
Vision and Hearing Screenings are conducted according to the guidelines provided by the MDPH (https://www.mass.gov/lists/school-health-screening). A referral letter is sent home when the student does not meet the screening parameters recommending evaluation by your physician or vision professional.
Vision screening is performed in grades PK, K-5, once in grades 6-8, once in grades 9-12.
Hearing screening is performed in grades K-3, once in grades 6-8, once in grades 9-12.
Heights and weights are done on students in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10. Body Mass Index (BMI) and corresponding percentile is calculated and recorded following guidelines from the MDPH for each student. The results are not mailed home but instead will be recorded in the student’s cumulative health record at school. Parents are welcome to call the school nurse to discuss the findings.
Postural screening is conducted annually for students in grades 5-9. A report from the student’s healthcare provider is required in order to be excused from this school screening. A referral letter is sent home when the student does not meet the screening parameter so that further evaluation can be done
Exemptions: These exams are mandated by the state. A religious exemption, medical exemption or provider’s note submitted before the screening is acceptable to excuse your student from the exam.

Theatre 370 Presents, Carrie the Musical
Theatre 370 Presents Carrie the Musical as our first production of the 2024-2025 season! Carrie White is a teenage outcast who longs to fit in. At school, she’s bullied by the popular crowd, and virtually invisible to everyone else. At home, she’s dominated by her loving but cruelly controlling mother. What none of them know is that Carrie’s just discovered she’s got a special power, and if pushed too far, she’s not afraid to use it. Based on the Stephen King horror classic, this favorite is given new life onstage and is not to be missed.
The show contains adult themes including violence, mass killing at a school prom, child abuse, PG-13 language, blood, religion, suggested sexual abuse, and bullying.
This show is not suitable for children under 14.
Tickets NOW available at https://cur8.com/25481/project/125449 or on the Theatre 370 homepage

IXL Email and Information
Today you received an email regarding your child's use of IXL. IXL is an online program that helps support our students in ELA and Math. If you were looking for your child's diagnostic score and it was not available, it may be because your child is not currently taking a math and/or an ELA course. Additionally, students in grades 11 and 12 may not have complete scores because at this level the teachers are using the program to support specific skills.
Attendance Notification
At open house we shared the high school's focus on student attendance his year. We will be sending out monthly letters that will track your child's attendance at school. After reviewing the email, please contact your child's assistant principal if you have any concerns. If your child is at risk of losing credit for having too many absences in a class, your child's assistant principal will be in touch.

Public art unveiling event: Tuesday, September 24 from 3:30 - 5:30
The Town, along with the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC), engaged an artist to create 3 murals in the downtown area and is planning a public unveiling on Tuesday, September 24 after school. It would be wonderful for HPS families and staff to join the event and there will be food, music and activities for all as part of the celebration.
The artist was chosen by a panel of community stakeholders after a year-long process to develop a call for artists. The call for artists had a focus on work that would connect the rail trail to the downtown area through creative placemaking. This artist's proposal was selected in part because of the appeal of the design to children. Given that Blair Square is both the location of the largest mural and the pick-up/gathering space for so many children after school, the event feels like a natural fit for the Holliston Public Schools.

WELCOME BACK!
HHS Families,
Welcome back to the 2024-2025 school year. The summer is a time to rest, relax and reconnect with families and friends, and I hope everyone had fun adventures along the way. We are busy preparing for another wonderful school year and will be ready on Tuesday, August 27th, to greet students.
Below you will find information essential for a successful return to school. As always, a lot of information is included in this back-to-school email, so please don't hesitate to reach out to the main office or school counseling office if you have any questions.
HHS Administration
Principal - David List
Assistant Principal Grades 9 & 11 - Nancy Khalaf
Assistant Principal Grades 10 & 12 - Ron Taylor
Student Services Administrator - Kim Condon
Athletic Director - Matt Baker
Please feel free to contact the main office if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to a successful school year and are excited to see everyone next week.
PowerSchool
This is where you can view student schedules, attendance, and classroom information. There are helpful instructions if you are new to PowerSchool (PS) on the website: Parent/Guardian PowerSchool Information
PowerSchool Accounts for Students
All students are able to access their accounts using their Holliston email address. Email addresses for students are their last name followed by the first three letters of their first name. For example, potterhar@students.holliston.k12.ma.us and their password is their first name followed by their student ID number. For any students having trouble, please contact Jacob Keplinger (Network Administrator) at keplingerj@holliston.k12.ma.us for additional support.
Annual Student Verification Forms
Stay tuned for an email within the next week regarding "Annual Student Verification Forms" to update contact and medical information and sign off on various forms (general procedures, handbook, acceptable use, etc.) The form will be emailed to the first contact for your student(s). Only one contact should complete the form. You may use this form to notify us of any health changes and update contact and emergency contact info. The form will come from the following email address: noreply@noreply.powerschool.com. This must be completed at the start of the school year.
Medication Drop Off
Any families who are dropping off medication with the school nurse should do so during the first week of the school year. Please reach out to Tereza Rodrigues at rodriguest@holliston.k12.ma.us if you have any questions. Any controlled substances must be dropped off to the nurse by a parent/guardian.
Chromebooks
Holliston High School enjoys a full 1:1 Chromebook program. All students in grades 9-12 are issued Chromebooks for use in their daily academics. By providing each student a school-issued Chromebook, HHS can ensure a consistent, equitable technology learning experience. Teachers prepare activities with the understanding that students will have their school-owned Chromebooks with them, complete with school-installed apps, settings, and internet safeguards. Privately-owned student laptops, tablets, or Chromebooks are not an appropriate substitute in class, except in very unusual circumstances, and should stay safely at home.
Student Schedules
Student schedules are available on PowerSchool. If you are unable to access your PowerSchool account, please contact the High School's main office.
If you need a counselor to review something in your schedule, please click this link. Please note that counselors will not be back in the office until next week. Once they have reviewed your scheduling concern, they will reach out to confirm any changes that may have been made.
Signing Up for Band and Chorus
Any student who is interested in Band and Chorus should plan on going to room 108 (Band) and 112 (Chorus) during the second week of the school year. Returning students to band or chorus should report beginning on Thursday, August 29th. Once you are signed up for the DSB ensembles, you will find out all the information for signing up for the after-school ensembles (Jazz Band, Act 2, Harmonix, and T-Tones).
Lockers/Supplies
General lockers are not automatically assigned. Students can request a locker from the main office if they would like one. Athletic or Wellness lockers will be assigned based on team enrollment and class schedule. There is no supply list for high school, but individual teachers may request student-specific items. For the first week of school, students should come prepared with their Chromebook fully charged, a notebook, and a writing utensil. Individual teachers will provide more information to students.
Student Parking Information
General Parking Pass Information:
Juniors may enter a lottery to determine if they have the opportunity to purchase a parking permit. They will have until August 20th to submit the form, and the lottery will be held on August 21st. Once juniors are notified, they will have one week to bring in payment for the parking spot, or the parking spot will be forfeited.
The permit allows the student to park in a specific spot in the parking lot. If this permit is lost or stolen, the student will be responsible for purchasing a new permit. IF YOUR STUDENT HAS NOT YET PASSED THEIR DRIVER'S TEST, YOU CAN NOT APPLY FOR A PARKING PASS.
For 2024-2025, the parking pass fee is $50.00, and payment must be received before a pass will be issued. Juniors will only need to pay if they have been chosen in the lottery to get a spot. Checks should be made payable to 'Town of Holliston' and either mailed to Susan Forbes, Holliston High School, 370 Hollis Street, Holliston, MA 01746 or dropped off at the main office (8:30 am-2:30 pm Mon-Fri)
Optional Senior Paint a Parking Spot Fundraiser:
Seniors will have the option to reserve and decorate a specific parking spot for an additional cost of $25 and a refundable deposit of $50. This is completely optional. If your student would like to participate, please make sure you fill out this "Senior Parking Spot Sign-Up Form". The $75 payment to participate must be a separate check from the $50 parking permit fee. More information about the dates and times for painting spaces will be sent out shortly. Payment for the fundraiser and parking permit fee may be submitted at the same time. Seniors will be able to paint their spots on the 25th and 26th of August.

Safe Route to Schools
I am pleased to inform you that Holliston High School has partnered with the Massachusetts Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Program to provide you with a valuable survey tool to gather data on how our students travel to and from school. The results of this survey will help plan safe transportation options for all students, evaluate current SRTS efforts, identify areas for improvement, and assist this community in an effort to reduce traffic congestion during arrival and dismissal times.
This brief survey should take no longer than three minutes to complete and is available in nine different languages. It is important to note that the SRTS Survey does not collect any personal or identifiable data as the survey does not call for any names to be provided and gathers approximate home addresses using nearby streets. Additionally, schools that obtain a response rate of 50% or higher can receive a gift pack (pedometers, bike lights, and reflective backpacks, or other similar items) valued at over $250.00.
The information you provide will help determine:
The average distance students travel to school

Semester 2 teachers have completed their course recommendations for the 24-25 school year. The recommendations must be made now because they allow us to begin the scheduling process for next year. After reviewing the course recommendations you wish to override, please click here and fill out the override request form. (Override forms must be submitted by April 8th) Students will be meeting with counselors to review the selection process. If you have questions about our course selection process, don't hesitate to contact your student's teacher or school counselor.
The College Process: 11th grade student meetings with Counselors
The school counselors wanted to send a quick note to all 11th graders regarding some upcoming workshops on the college-planning process. We will hold workshops for students on various topics before the end of the year, including crafting a college list, putting together an activities profile, and navigating the Common Application.
First up - creating a college list! Counselors will be available in room 303 on Monday and Tuesday (4/8 and 4/9) during DSB to support students in putting together a list of schools they may be considering. Other workshops will be announced following the April break.
Please remember that your counselor is available for college and post-secondary planning appointments. We are happy to meet with students and/or parents/guardians (we can always Zoom!). Please have a look below to make an appointment with your counselor. The HHS School Counseling website (particularly the College Planning section) is also a great family resource.
Please let your counselor know if you have any questions!

Highlighting Opportunities at HHS
We are fortunate to have on staff at HHS, Sue Stone, who runs our robust senior project and internship program. Most of our seniors take advantage of this program, and it has an impact on students that lasts well beyond high school. This article was recently shared with me, highlighting the work of a Holliston High School Alum, and he shares the impact of Sue and his senior year internship.

Grade 8 to 9 Transition Survey
As part of our ongoing commitment to provide a supportive school community and to provide ample opportunities for families to communicate with our school leadership, we ask that you fill out this quick survey about your student's grade 8 to grade 9 transition experience. We hope to use the information to provide a seamless transition for our students and families as they enter the HHS community. This survey is for all students and families of HHS and not just the current grade 9 families.
Family Survey on HHS Bell Schedule
Our NEASC report and equity audit recommended that we examine the current HHS bell schedule to ensure it meets the needs of all students and provides an equitable experience for all students. Additionally, at the most recent school committee, a request was made that the HHS administration present challenges in the current schedule and provide possible solutions to those problems. As a part of this process, it is important that we have the voice of students, teachers, and families. We ask that families take a moment to fill out this short survey to provide feedback on the current high school schedule.
Introduction to IXL
Students in grades 9 and 10, who have an ELA and/or Math course 2nd semester, will begin a pilot of the IXL program. Based on feedback from the pilot of this program that is already underway at the middle school and on our need to provide additional support to our students, we also decided to pilot this program. As the pilot gets underway your student's teacher will send out more information about the program and how students are expected to engage with the program. Please note that as part of the pilot, the student expectations for the use of the program will be uniform across each discipline. For more information about IXL please click here.

As a part of this process, it is important that we have the voice of students, teachers, and families. We ask that families take a moment to fill out this short survey to provide feedback on the current high school schedule.

Tardy Policy Update
We made a 2 minute video to share this announcement, and below are the details!
We are both new to this building, and we love being here! One aspect of the HHS culture that we believe needs adjusting is around adhering to the official 8:10 am school start time. Currently, on any given morning 15 - 20% of students (between 100 and 150!) are entering the school building after the 8:10 start time. Instead, all students should be present in their classroom prior to the 8:10 bell. We think learning how to be on time consistently is an important life skill and well worth our time to address.
Free College Applications, January 12th
On January 12th, nine of the state colleges of Massachusetts will waive their application fees. Use the code REACHFREE when applying to Fitchburg, Bridgewater, Framingham, MASSART, Mass Maritime, MCLA, Salem, Westfield, and Worcester.

The Holliston Drug & Alcohol Awareness Coalition (HDAAC)
The Holliston Drug & Alcohol Awareness Coalition (HDAAC) recently achieved a significant milestone by completing the 3-week National Coalition Academy (NCA) training offered by the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA). This accomplishment follows their receipt of a 5-year Drug-Free Community Grant (DFC Grant) from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) the previous year. The NCA training and DFC Grant are pivotal elements in the coalition's ongoing efforts to address drug and alcohol-related issues in the community.
HDAAC has made its way into Holliston High School! They recently welcomed HHS senior Juliette as a Term 2 Intern; she is focused on projects centered around substance education and assistance for Holliston High School students. HDAAC is also working with several students from Kaitlin Mills' Service Learning class to assist them in their substance misuse-related projects and connecting with other students by starting a Youth Action Team club.
The coalition welcomes all parents/guardians interested in sharing their ideas and perspectives at the upcoming HDAAC meeting. Scheduled for Thursday, December 14th, from 6-8 pm on Zoom, this meeting holds particular significance as it will be dedicated to planning next year's initiatives.
Get involved by reaching out to HDAAC's Coordinator Zoe Moreau via email at moreauz@holliston.k12.ma.us, visit HDAAC.org, or find us on social media by searching HDAACoalition on Facebook and HollistonDAAC on Instagram.

Sandy Hook Promise - Anonymous Reporting System
On November 30th, Holliston High School (HHS) trained students in the Sandy Hook.

Take the ASVAB Test Free of Charge at HHS

MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey
Holliston High School students will again participate in the MetroWest Adolescent Health Survey. This survey is conducted every other year and is given to all students in grades 9-12. The survey will take place on November 9th. If you would like to opt your student out of the survey, please print, sign, and return the opt-out form that can be found by clicking here by November 8th.
SBIRT Screening for Grade 9
Starting November 7th, our school’s health staff will begin a health screening called SBIRT.
Screening results are recorded. No information identifying a student is kept (for
example, name or date of birth).
Screening results will not go into the student’s school record.
Screening results will not be shared without the permission of the student or their
parent/guardian. However, results may be shared in the case of an immediate medical emergency or when required by state law.
As with any school health screening, you can opt your child out of this process. Students themselves may also choose not to take part. If you do not want your child to participate in this screening or you have questions, contact Valerie Camiel at vcamiel@holliston.k12.ma.us by November 6th.
Parents and guardians can help their children make healthy choices. One important way to prevent alcohol and drug use is to talk with them about your thoughts and expectations. Some resources that can help these discussions include:

AP Test Registration Information
Please see below for an important message regarding AP exam registration. Please note the two deadlines (dependent on when students are enrolled in their AP course(s)).
Fall Registration Deadline: October 31, 2023
AP Classes that started Term 1 and all AP classes that are ONLINE (this pertains to most of our AP classes)
Spring Registration deadline: March 1, 2024
AP Classes that start Term 2 or Term 3
To Register for an AP Exam, students must complete TWO steps by their deadline:
Activate your AP Exam on MyAP by joining your AP Class with the Join Code* you received from your teacher AND under the Order Exam? option change “Undecided” to “Yes.”
Join your AP Class - Step by step Instructions with a video option
Submit exam fee ($100 per exam) on the APTS website.
Students requiring financial assistance should contact Ms. Mani Harwich (harwichm@holliston.k12.ma.us) in the School Counseling Office to learn more.
We know that parents/guardians may desire to register their students for exams without the student present; however, we strongly recommend that parents/guardians and students be present while registering to ensure that the correct exams are ordered on time.
An exam order will NOT be considered complete unless BOTH steps for registration have been completed. Any student who has not completed BOTH steps listed above by the applicable deadlines will NOT have an exam ordered.
Please avoid issues by completing registration/payment on time:
If you are enrolled in an AP class that started on the first day of school or any online AP class (regardless of start date), you have until October 31, 2023, to register for your AP exam.
If you are enrolled in an HHS (in-person) AP class that starts Term 2 or Term 3, you have until March 1, 2024, to register for your AP exam.
