HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH

QUOTE OF THE WEEK
A Note from the Principal . . . .
As we being our celebration of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month on September 15th, it reminds me of the connection to our faculty's focus this year on getting to know our students not just as learners, but as human beings. The idea of tapping into students’ funds of knowledge is rooted in all of our need to not only feel seen and accepted but to belong in a community that allows us to bring our true selves - our family traditions, our skills, our interests, our personal and family stories, our routines, and our beliefs with us as we walk through the doors of our school community every day.
As part of our work around culturally responsive instruction and practices, we will strive to be intentional about creating learning spaces that include literature, visuals, learning models and life experiences where students’ can see themselves, mirroring back their life experiences, beliefs, and traditions. It is an essential component to how we engage students in learning, not just one month of the year when their culture is lifted up and celebrated, but every day they walk through the doors of our classrooms.
In honor of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, Eileen Keane, our NPS Coordinator of Library Services, has shared an amazing resource to honor the traditions and culture of our Hispanic and Latinx students. See the information below:

Accessories for Chromebooks
This year we are asking the parents add two important Chromebook accessories to students' school supply list:
1. Plug-in Chromebook Headphones
As part of the "Away for the Day" cell phone initiative, bluetooth/wireless ear buds and headphones WILL NOT BE ALLOWED in school. As a result we ask that every family purchase plug in headphones for school use of Chromebooks. (an example is linked below) If families are not able to purchase this item, one will be provided by the school.
2. Chromebook Protective Case or Sleeve
Last year there were damages to hundreds of student Chromebooks at Day resulting in families receiving a repair bill. Investment in an inexpensive protection for your child's Chromebook will hopefully avoid unnecessary damages.

FEE INCREASES, FEE WAIVERS AND FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
As many of you know, the Newton Public Schools faced significant budget challenges this year. In order to arrive at a balanced budget, fees were raised for many services and activities. Below is a link to all of the fees that will be in place for the 2023-24 school year.
Fees for the 2023-24 School Year
The Newton Public Schools provides financial assistance so that all students can utilize bus transportation and participate in school activities, regardless of financial need. To facilitate this financial support, families need to apply for district-wide financial assistance EACH YEAR.
The application for the 2023-2024 district-wide financial assistance waiver is now available in Aspen. We encourage you to apply now so that your waiver is in place for registrations that may take place in the summer (bus, fall athletic fees, etc.) Visit the fee waiver information and instructions webpage to apply via the Aspen portal.
