March is Women's History Month

Dear Atholton families,

During Women’s History Month, we celebrate the countless women who have fought tirelessly and courageously for equality, justice, and opportunity in our Nation. We also reaffirm our commitment to advancing rights and opportunities for women and girls in the United States and around the world. We are mindful that we are building on the legacy of both recognized trailblazers and unsung heroines who have guided the course of American history and continue to shape its future.

This past week was bittersweet as the seasons of both our boys and girls basketball teams

came to an end. Our girls started off the week with a victory over Oakland Mills, only to fall just short in their second game against rival River Hill. I am impressed by the way our girls fought this season, and they should be very proud of their season. On Tuesday, the boys fell to Long Reach after doing an outstanding job of keeping the game competitive. We are so very proud of both teams for their efforts both on and off the court.

Not to be excluded, our indoor track team has had an impressive season as well. The Atholton boys and girls track, and field team competed in the Class 3A East regional indoor track and field championship at the Baltimore Armory. The Raiders were led by Darian (DJ) Traver Jr., who placed first in the 300 meters and 500 meters. He also helped the 4 x 200-meter relay to a fourth-place finish consisting of David Irabor, Cameron Lee, and Brayden McCrea. Furthermore, Cameron Lee placed sixth in the 55 meters advancing to the state meet with a qualifying time. Ethan Mulcahy also placed first in the 3200 meters, where he led the race from start to finish advancing to the state meet. He also led the 4 x 800-meter relay to a fourth-place finish consisting of Luke Nelson, Bryan Wang, and Jason (Jay) Jankoski. At the Class 3A state indoor track and field championship at the PG sports complex. The team performed at a remarkably high level against tough competition throughout the state. The Raiders were again led by Darian (DJ) Traver Jr., who placed second in the 300 meters with a time of 34.98, establishing a new school record!! He also finished third in the 500 meters helping the Raiders score valuable team points. The boy’s 4 x 800-meter relay consisting of Luke Nelson, Bryan Wang, Jason (Jay) Jankoski, and Ethan Mulcahy placed 7th, establishing a new season-best time of 8:35.42. The steady duo of Katie Wood and Olivia Struble also had outstanding performances again for the Raiders. Katie placed 7th in the shot put, and Olivia placed 7th in the pole vault. The Raiders also received outstanding performances from Olivia Struble, placing first in the pole vault with a season-best vault of 9 feet 6 inches, and Katie Wood, placing fourth in the shot put. Congratulations to the team on a successful season and for representing Atholton well. I am looking forward to the outdoor season!

As the third quarter comes to an end, decisions need to be made regarding options for next year. Some of those may be contingent upon summer classes. HCPSS Summer School registration is now open. For more information and to register for classes, please visit the Summer School Programs page HERE.

I know the parents of our seniors are eagerly awaiting the announcement of graduation dates. HCPSS and Merriweather Post Pavilion management team continue to stay in close contact as their concert schedule is developed for this year. Hopefully, their final concert dates will be confirmed in the next few weeks so that the graduation schedule can be planned out and then distributed to schools and the community. Just a reminder that the Junior/Senior Prom will be held on May 19 at The Hotel at Arundel Preserve in Hanover, MD. Lastly, it is that time of year when students across the county begin the process of selecting the next Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB). I am thrilled to report that sophomore James Obasiolu is throwing his hat in the ring for SMOB. We wish him all the best. Additionally, all middle and high schools are charged with selecting six delegates to help narrow the SMOB field. The delegates for Atholton are: Jonathan Jimenez (9), Jason Porter (9), Samuel Li (10), Jacob Poteet (10), Maisi Ball (11), and Akash Dada (11). I want to thank each of them for agreeing to be a part of the SMOB process.

MVA Permit Testing

The next MVA Driver’s Permit Test will be on Monday, April 17th, at 2:15 p.m. in the Media Center. Students must be 15 years old and 9 months by April 17th to complete the driver’s permit test. Students must return a signed parent permission form to the front office or Mrs. Bopst by Tuesday, April 11th. Late forms will not be accepted. Forms can be found on Mrs. Bopst's classroom door (room F182). Students are registered for the MVA Permit Test on a first-come, first-serve basis when the signed permission slip is returned. Spots are limited. If you need accommodations for the test, please visit your local MVA branch for support. Students can get driver's manuals from Mrs. Bopst to help prepare for the test.

*Disclaimer - when you pass the MVA Permit Test at school, YOU MUST make an appointment with the MVA branch to obtain the actual permit and pay the fee. When you pass, the paper given to you is only a piece of paper and DOES NOT SERVE as your learner’s permit.

Becca's Closet

Our annual dress giveaway will be held on March 11 from 9 am -2 pm in the cafeteria. There are over 1,000 gowns that are gently used or new with tags. In addition to free prom dresses, basic alterations will be provided.
