Hastings Middle School 2024-2025
November 10, 2024
Dear Hastings Middle School Families,
It’s hard to believe we’re already just two weeks away from Thanksgiving break! The school year has flown by, and it has been filled with so many memorable moments and accomplishments here at Hastings Middle School. Some of you likely heard about our 7th grade trip to Pittsburgh a few weeks back. At this week’s Board of Education meeting Ms. Dawn, the driver of bus 5, will be recognized for her quick response to being run off the road as we were heading home. We are so grateful for her professionalism, care, and amazing reaction. She kept our students safe during a very scary moment. If you would like to join us in thanking Ms. Dawn the meeting on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m.
As we move through November, we look forward to honoring our Veterans this coming Monday with a special ceremony hosted by our 8th grade students and staff. To our parents, families, and community members who have served in the military, please know how deeply we appreciate your service to our country. On behalf of the staff at HMS, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for all you have done to uphold the freedoms we enjoy.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support. We wish everyone a wonderful week ahead. Go Bears!
Warm regards,
Penny Stires
Lost and Found
Our lost and found is FULL! We will be making announcements over the next two weeks, but please remind your student(s) to check for any missing items. Due to how much is currently in our lost and found, we are now donating items at Thanksgiving Break.
Yearbook Photos Needed
As the fall sports season winds down, we want to capture the memories in our yearbook! If you have any pictures from the fall sports season, please email them to our yearbook advisor Allison Tomlin (atomlin@uaschools.org). Thank you!

Service Learning Celebration!
The sixth graders at Hastings just wrapped up their annual service learning project related to the Lost Boys of Sudan. Kids did a great job listening to former Lost Boy, Bol Aweng, as he shared his Journey of Hope. Then they read picture books written or illustrated by Bol and watched video clips. They connected the Five Themes of Geography to the Lost Boys' 1500 mile journey. The service learning project wrapped up when students participated in the walkathon with Bol.
We are happy to report that Hastings Middle School will be donating $3,786 to the Buckeye Clinic in South Sudan this year. That makes it $29,786 over the past 10 years!
A huge thank you to the 6th grade teachers and especially: Mr. Paul Crabtree, Mrs. Janice Daubenmier, and Mr. Quinn Giesige!

Parent/Guardian Presentation – “Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health”
Nationwide Children’s Hospital is offering a session on “Supporting Your Child’s Mental Health” on December 11th at 8:15 AM for parents/guardians to learn more about risk factors, warning signs and the steps to take if you have a concern about your child. We'll meet in person at the media center in Hastings Middle School.
This presentation is suitable for parents of all grade levels! It includes a brief segment on the Signs of Suicide program that the 8th graders will be participating in this year.
If you'd like to learn more about the SOS program, please click here.
If you can’t attend this event, don’t worry! The Nationwide Children’s Hospital team is finalizing caregiver education videos that will cover nearly all the information presented that day.
We’ll be sure to include that resource in the family flyer when it’s available.
Thank you!

World Kindness Day
World Kindness Day is Wednesday, November 13. That’s right, Upper Arlington is partnering with the world to bring a little extra kindness into our spaces. School counselors designed these BINGO-style cards to encourage students to Start with Heart and participate in acts of kindness. First introduced in 1998 by the World Kindness Movement, World Kindness Day offers an opportunity to highlight good deeds in the community and the common thread of kindness. Studies have found that acts of kindness are linked to an increase in well-being, self-esteem, empathy, compassion, and mood.
