Inspiring Excellence
Casa Grande Union High School District | October 2024
I hope your family had a wonderful and relaxing Fall Break, filled with memorable moments and quality time together. I'm excited to share that the Academic Calendar for the 2025-26 school year has been officially approved and is now available on our website. Next year, we will have a two-week Fall Break, unlike this year's one-week break. This year, we only have one week off because we will be off for the entire Thanksgiving week, from November 25 to 29.
We are witnessing alarming rises in mental health issues among young adolescents across the nation. According to the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, a staggering 4.8 million adolescents, equating to 19.5% of this age group, reported experiencing a major depressive episode within the last year. Furthermore, of these individuals, 3.6 million described their struggles as resulting in severe impairment in their daily lives. These mental health challenges are not just isolated issues; they are fundamentally linked to a disturbing increase in substance abuse and suicidal thoughts among youth, highlighting a critical public health concern that demands urgent attention and action.
As an educational organization, we are deeply committed to the well-being of our students. We understand that school attendance, academic success, and discovering your spark are crucial for thriving adolescents. To support this, we are restructuring our scheduling to provide a Period 2.5 where students can get extra help in their struggling subjects. We are pleased to see significant increases this year in attendance rates, and we will continue to work on strategies to increase attendance rates further. Our schools offer a wide range of extra-curricular activities to assist students in discovering and developing their sparks.
As parents, we can support our children by keeping the lines of communication open, supporting their academic success, and actively participating in discovering and developing their sparks outside of the school system. This could involve exposing them to different hobbies, encouraging their interests, and providing opportunities for them to explore and develop their talents.
Finally, the Casa Grande Union High School District has partnered with school districts across the country to bring a lawsuit against social media companies for their role in these mental health challenges. This action is aimed at holding these companies accountable for their role in promoting negative messaging and cyberbullying, which we believe is significantly impacting the self-esteem of our youth. We encourage parents to limit their children's time on social media to help mitigate these effects.
Working together, we can ensure that all CGUHSD students thrive and graduate college and/or are career ready. We value your partnership in this journey and look forward to your continued support.
Have a safe Halloween.
Jeff
