Welcome to our CTS Snapshot - a weekly celebration update. We are delighted to share with parents and carers alike student triumphs at Corby Technical School. We are proud of every student and every success they have - please feel free to share with us any achievements they might have.

Year 9 Cadets:
Recently, Year 9 students Katie and Emily were able to going flying for the first time last with Air Cadets. This had been cancelled due to the weather on previous occasions and both were lucky enough to have between 20 and 40 minutes flying over Stamford and Rutland Water. They were able to control the aircraft and try out some acrobatics too. Well done girls!
Subject Highlights:
Each week will focus on a department within the school and share their nominations with you. This week our Maths team will be sharing their nominations with you.
Ms Khumalo has nominated:
Year 7 - Miss Khumalo has been incredibly impressed by the drive and ambition the students have shown since we started Term 5. They get on with their work and are working hard. A special mention to Gary who has really improved and has been doing so much work each lesson!
Year 8 have continuously surprised Ms Khumalo with the level of Mathematical reasoning and enthusiasm to complete challenging Maths problems. This week in particular, they have been very engaged in the Probability lessons and have shown great interest in their learning, discovering, and understanding new Mathematical concepts each time.
Year 9 have shown improvement in their readiness to learn and their general participation is improving each day.
Mrs Ferns would like to say well done to 10A1 who have been working hard on Circle Theorems. They have shown great progress and understanding. Also nominated are Year 7 students Jakub and Damjan who have shown amazing effort and understanding of the Statistics topic.
Mr Shaku has nominated Year 7 student Milo who has been working consistently and remarkably well in his lessons and assessments, Year 8 student Dexter has been taking pride in his work, and has been doing fantastic and showed great improvement, Year 9 student Kyle whose confidence in Maths has improved and has been working remarkably well, finally Year 10 student Leyton S who is consistent and displays a positive attitude even when he is given questions that challenges him to think deeper.
Ms Jonga has made the following nominations this week:
9A1 have been acknowledged for excellent progress. All students worked well to complete tasks on Transformations, Alan in particular for excellent contributions. 7P have completed excellent work in their approach to the Angle facts assessment, Julia J's assessment was very impressive. 8B1 have shown good effort in statistics, Kacper K is nominated for his resilience in solving problems.
9C3 have also worked well in lessons on Statistics and Emilia has made very good progress.
Ms Cupid would like to nominate 7Q, and 8A1, students are hardworking, settled and participate in the Maths lessons and great progress has been made. In particular Phoebe D, Kora and Ramata (7Q) and Alfred (8A1) who consistently work hard. In 8B3 progress has been made with Janaia working hard consistently. In Year 9 students in 9A2 and 9C1are working well, Bradley, Lucas and Moyo (9C1) and Emily and Connor (9A2) have completed some very good work.
Mrs Wawryniuk is delighted to highlight all students in 7A2 this week! Mrs Wawryniuk has been impressed with the students who have dedicated their time to complete their Maths homework! Well done! David P and Sophie F have demonstrated an exceptional determination to complete all tasks to 100% each lesson. Special rewards recipients are Franceska, Charlie , Riley, Dusan, Aisha , Sam and Max for their positive attitude and insightful contribution to solving Maths problems and for supporting peers.
9B1 has worked extremely hard and thoughtfully participated in completing “Think hard Questions” were exceptionally impressive from Gabriella and Patricia. In addition to this, great progress was demonstrated by Lucas, Ellie, Evan, Elliot, Sam and Weronica. Mrs Wawryniuk was particularly impressed with the outstanding work of Riley, Rhys and Harley and their extremely meticulous work each lesson. Keep it up!
Inexhaustible energy and enthusiasm was shown during the Maths lessons with Year 10B1 this week. All students widely contribute to solving problems and share their thoughts openly and debated around misconceptions. Mrs Wawryniuk is delighted to teach these young Mathematicians who are thrilled to learn each lesson and show an outstanding charisma for progress and achievement. 11A1 are continuing to work extremely hard and are preparing for their GCSE Maths Exam. Their dedication in completing each question to the highest possible grade is impressive. All students are focused to solidify their knowledge and address their misconceptions. They are working hard outside of lesson by completing past papers and catching up with Easter Interventions, Maths Conferences and after school sessions. We are delighted to see hard work from Shae, Kasper, Isabella, Maya , Freddie and Stas each lesson without exceptions. The Maths team wish our students all the best in their GSCE Maths Exam!
Mrs van der Lith has nominated her 9B2 Maths group who have been very settled and are completing exceptional work. Also a mention for Year 8 students Maia M and Jack B who showed resilience when we calculated the surface areas of cuboids.
Mrs Wynn would like to mention 11A2 who now only have 8 lessons until their first Maths exam, each lesson and intervention could make the difference between a grade. Special mention to the following who are showing consistent efforts, Ava, Julia, Jake, Matthew, Antoni and Olivia.
10A2 and 10C2 are continuing to focus well and making excellent progress.
Mr Jackson has nominated Year 7 students Jake and Adyan for consistently producing work to a very high standard in their Maths lessons. Also nominated are Year 11 students Blessing, Angela and Arran for working hard outside of lessons in their revision to prepare for their Maths exams. Finally, a massive well done to Year 13 student James for achieving an A* grade in his Further Maths mock examination.
Year 11 English Literature Conference:
On Wednesday, we had an incredibly successful English Literature Conference that students attended to support their exam revision. Around 70 students attended the session that focused on Romeo and Juliet, Unseen Poetry Comparison, Power and Conflict knowledge and essay skills. Their conduct and engagement was exemplary. The students will complete their English Literature exam on 13th May 2024 (paper 1), 20th May 2024 (Paper 2).
Curriculum Focus:
Each week we will share with you what our students are learning in our focus departments this term, below you will find the topics for KS5 Science along with some questions you can ask your child.
Physics
Year 12 :
Students are currently studying the waves topic and will be carrying out a practical using oscilloscopes this week. They have also learnt about interference which will lead to work using lasers. Questions they will now be able to answer include:
1. What happens when two waves of the same frequency interfere in antiphase?
2. What should be done to the time base on an oscilloscope when the time period of the wave is too low to analyse?
3. How do noise-cancelling headphones work?
Year 13:
Students have just finished practical work which involved using radioactive sources and are now preparing for the next set of mock exams. Questions they could now answer include:
1. How does a CAT scan produce a 3 image
2. Describe a method to prove the inverse square law using a gamma source
3. Explain how a generator works in terms of magnetic flux.
Biology
Year 12:
Students have been studying transport in plants and in animals. They have been looking at the specialised structures that are responsible for transporting substances and have recently dissected a celery stem to look at the vascular bundles.
Questions:
1. What are the 3 transport routes in a plant?
2. How does water move into a plant?
3. Explain what affects transpiration
Year 13:
Year 13 biologists have been looking at respiration in detail, explaining the Kreb’s cycle and how energy is released from glucose. They have also carried out an investigation into how exercise affects heart rate.
Questions
1. Describe the krebs cycle.
2. What ethical consideration do you take into account for using living organisms in experiments?
3. Why does the pH of milk drop when you add yoghurt?
Year 12 Work Experience:
Year 12 student Paulina has completed a six week work experience placement with Nationwide Building Society. Mrs Lomas (Careers Advisor) worked with the Deputy Treasurer Rob Collins to design a completely bespoke programme for Paulina who also attended the Treasury in London and was mentored by 16 employees from different departments and we received some fantastic feedback.
Paulina’s interest in the Banking world came from her Travel and Tourism A Level – looking at the financial world from an economic background.
