GATE Testing (3rd Grade)
Between October 2, 2023, and October 13, 2023, third and fourth-grade PYLUSD students will be administered the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). This test is one of the identifiers used to qualify students for Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) services in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. For more information regarding GATE identification and access to sample CogAT items, please visit our district website.
Our third-grade and fourth-grade classes will be testing the week of October 7, 2024
The CogAT assesses higher-level thinking skills such as learned reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. Students are presented with novel situations and must apply their acquired language and mathematical skills. Subtests are Verbal (language), Quantitative (math), and Nonverbal (spatial/shapes).
Your child’s CogAT scores will be accessible in AERIES following our district testing window. You will be emailed when these scores are available and directions on accessing them.
To help your child do his or her best on these tests, be sure that he or she receives adequate sleep the night before testing. Allow enough time in the mornings when tests will be given for your child to eat breakfast without being rushed. Show interest, but do not place too much emphasis on this test; an anxious child will not give his or her best performance. If your child is ill, please do not send him or her to school. Make-up days are built into the testing schedule.
If you DO NOT want your student to participate, return the opt-out slip sent home by the teacher.

School Site Council
School Site Council Voting
Here are your 2024-25 nominees (listed alphabetically by last name):
Zinga Evans: I am a parent of 4 girls within the PYLUSD. All our girls attended Brookhaven and 3 are currently attending. I've worked as a parent volunteer during book fairs and in classrooms for grades K, 1, 2, and 3. I am appreciative of the parent-teacher partnership we've experienced at Brookhaven! The partnership has been a major part of our children's academic success. I love this school and would love to share both personal and shared ideas to promote academic success. I would love to be part of the team that ensures that monies spent in the school plan are used for academic achievement for all students.
Jayson Sohi: I am a parent of two Brookhaven students, one of which is about to engage in a more concerted stage of academic testing and rigor (3rd grade). I'm very interested in planning for improving student achievement (as viewed through the objective lens of standardized testing), and helping disseminate information to other parents to help inform and generate a sense of shared responsibility around this absolutely critical part of our kids' education.
Andy Tang: I am passionate about making a positive impact on our school and community. I believe I can help bridge the gap between parents and administration. I'm a great listener and a team player. I'm confidence in my ability to find creative solutions to challenges. I am eager to contribute my time, energy, and ideas to make our school a better place for everyone. By being on the school council would allow me to serve our community and help make a difference.

6th Grade News
Outdoor Ed
Hello, 6th Grade Parents,
I apologize for the confusion on the payment options for camp. I wanted to clarify that everyone will benefit from the 6th grade fundraising efforts EXCEPT those families who waive the funds. I want to further explain the first three options:
- We will pay the full amount and waive any discounts from sixth grade fundraising. This means you will pay the entire portion ($590) in one check and not benefit from the 6th grade fundraising.
- We plan to make the full donation in January, minus any discounts from sixth grade fundraising. This means you will pay with one check in January ($590 minus any fundraising discounts).
- We will pay in four (4) installments of $147.50. The last payment in January will reflect the fundraising amount. You will pay in installments. The last payment in January will be less, depending on the 6th grade fundraising.
Please RETAKE the survey if you haven't already (linked here) to reflect the updated payment options. Let me know if you have any questions about the payment options. All other questions can be sent to Mr. Nakanishi.
Thank you!
Mrs. Fisher
