At McGuire, we are striving to Capture Kids' Hearts every day! We have a Social Contract as a staff and are working on having Social Contracts in every classroom in our school for how we treat each other and how we want to be treated by others. We are working on sharing "Good Things" every day in our classrooms which helps lift our outlook and find gratitude in small and big ways. Ask your child to share a "Good Thing" about their day and challenge them to find at least one. Then you can ask them a follow-up question about their "Good Thing" which will give you a different glimpse into their days at McGuire. So thankful to have you on this journey to capture hearts with us!

We are so thankful that we had the opportunity to honor those that serve our country and have served our country in the past through our Veterans Day Assembly on Wednesday, November 8, 2023. Our students were in awe and humbled to meet Veterans that took time to come here to McGuire to see what we have prepared to honor them all. We welcomed families and Veterans and are so excited to continue to carry this tradition here at McGuire. We had to add several more rows of chairs this year to accommodate all of our guests. What a GREAT problem to have and we loved having a full gym with families and community members. As our students sang songs they prepared and read writing they have practiced, there were many eyes in the gym tearing up with tears of joy and thanksgiving. We are so thankful that we live in the land of the free because of the brave.

• We have put up a Grateful Turkey and we want it to be FULL of turkey feathers with what we are thankful for as a whole school! If you need more turkey feathers sent home, let your classroom teacher know and we would love to send them home so you can show us what you are thankful for this season. You can write on it at home with regards to what you are thankful for and we would love to put it up at school here on our wall. Decorate it if you want and bring it back to school cut out and we will hang it up for you. Can't wait to see what you are thankful for! With the colder temperatures and snowy weather, please send your student with labeled snow gear; including boots, gloves, hat, coat, snow pants. If you are in need of assistance with getting the proper clothing you can set up an appointment with Clothing Inc. which is located just down the road from McGuire Elementary book an appointment here - https://www.clothinginc.org/, or contact your student's teacher.

During the course of the school year, our buildings are obligated to practice at least 5 Fire Drills, 2 Tornado Drills and 3 Lockdown drills. At times, we do have our YSU Liason or other officers from the Police Department assist in our drills. We cover with our students the locations of where to go for each drill, what to do during specific drills, and how to properly evacuate when it is needed. You can also find this information in your child's Handbook at the front of the student agenda.

During the first weeks of school, classes read the story, I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared book in their class with their teachers. This book focused on the main components of the safety protocols that we work on with children.

At McGuire Elementary, our school expectations are Be Safe, Be Respectful, and Be Responsible and we are committed to teaching and reinforceing positive behavior expectations in all areas of the school from the classroom to the playground. Each area of our school day, has a focused set of positive expectations that we teach, model, and practice - on what it looks like to be safe, respectful, and responsible.

Our Mustang matrix is at the front of your student's agenda in the pages included for the student handbook, we encourage you to review these expectations at home with your child too.

Daily our students earn Dojo Points for meeting positive expectations, we recognize students with our Positive Office Referrals, Positive Postcards mailed home, and Student Shout Outs each month.

We know our students are still growing and developing mentally and socially, so we recognize it is always a work in progress when teaching and reteaching expectations. We utilize restorative practices - including repairing the harm, circle ups, and more.

Our Student Council Advisors are Mrs. Skonieczny and Miss Jorgens. This year, Student Council is going to take part in four community service projects for the following organizations: The Care Store, Karma Kat Kafe, the local homeless shelter, and the Foster Closet. In order to give our student council representatives more opportunities in leadership, they will be in charge of planning each community service project. Each of the organizations we are looking forward to helping will be assigned to a team of our representatives. At our next meeting, these students will begin planning the details. We are looking forward to seeing all of the amazing ideas and events they are going to plan!

All medications must be brought to the office with the appropriate health form. Please do not send medications to school with your child. This includes inhalers and epi-pens.

All students will be dropped off at the front door and will walk to the west playground entrance at 8:35. When you see the adult supervisor come out the front door, please feel free to begin dropping off if you are within our loading zone, between the McGuire sign in front of the school and the front porch. Come in the east entrance, drive to the front, drop off and exit the parking lot. Use the exit closest to the front door of the school. The first bell will ring at 8:40 and then school will officially start at 8:45. If it is too cold or raining, you will follow the same drop-off time and the student will come in the school at the west entrance.

Afternoon will be very similar to the morning. Dismissal is at 3:49. 3rd and 5th will be dismissed in front of the school and 4th grade has the option to park in the small parking lot in front of the gym to be dismissed. Please remain in the vehicle if you are in front of the school in the line and we will bring your student to you. If you would like to park and walk to the porch area, you are welcome to park in the far west lot and walk over to the front of the school.

Student Attendance is important to us. If your child is sick or showing signs of COVID, please call the school Office at 775-2260 before 10:00 each morning to let us know.

For safety reasons, families will receive a phone call by 10:40 am for any student that is marked as Absent each morning in Power School. You can deter getting that call from our system by calling us in the morning to let us know of your child's absence and their reason for the absence.

Our codes we use for absences are:

UA-Unexcused Absence

Any absence that has not been reported by a parent or guardian and/or any absence that is not listed as an Excused Absence in Board Policy.

AV-Verified Absence

An absence that the parent verifies or explains. Example: (1) The student doesn’t feel well, and is staying home, but is not visiting the doctor. (2) The family is taking an extra long weekend, vacation, etc.

EA-Excused Absence

Absences that meet the definition of an Excused Absence based on MPPS Board Policy.

*Illness or professional appointments with a doctors note *Death of a relative

*Observance of Religious Holidays

McGuire has a no student cell phone policy in our student handbook. If a cell phone comes to school with a student it should be turned off and stored in their locked from 8:40am-3:49pm.

We also have a no hats or hoods policy inside the school building, students can wear them outside during recess.

Friendly reminder from our Student Handbook at the front of your student's agenda - toys, trading cards, and pokemon cards should be left at home. We want to make sure things are not lost or stolen at school - and we can best do this by leaving items home. pg. 3 of Handbook

Friendly reminder of our No Outside Food policy for Student Lunch time. Students must bring their lunch to school or choose a school lunch option.
