Prayer for the New Year
A New Year's Prayer
Dear God, In this New Year I pray:
To live deeply, with purpose,
To live freely, with detachment,
To live wisely, with humility,
To live justly, with compassion,
To live lovingly, with fidelity, To live mindfully, with awareness.
To live gratefully, with generosity,
To live fully, with enthusiasm.
Help us to hold this vision and to daily renew it in our hearts,
becoming ever more one with You, our truest selves.
Amen.
.

Virtue of the Month
VIRTUE OF THE MONTH: SELF-CONTROL
God has given us the ability to choose.
We are able to control how we react to what happens around us.
We may feel pressure from inside or from outside ourselves to react violently to a situation. We’ve all “lost it” at one time or another. We are never proud of those moments. As soon as they happen we make a promise that they will not happen again.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at controlling our reactions. We can get better at showing self-control.
Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that we will regret. Self-control helps us to resist the temptation to do something that will harm ourselves or others. Self-control is one of the marks of a spiritually mature person.
When we all use self-control, we can be sure that our school will be a safe, caring and inclusive place to live and to learn.
A person with self-control…
• is patient
• knows how to wait his/her turn
• can calm him/herself down and think before reacting to situations
• knows how to avoid physical aggression (hitting, kicking, pushing)
• can think things through

Epiphany
The Feast of the Epiphany
When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: `And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will gov-ern my people Israel.'" Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. Matthew 2: 1- 12
Catholic Education Week
The theme chosen for the upcoming 2025 Catholic Education Week is: Catholic Education: Pilgrims of Hope L’éducation catholique: Pèlerins de l’espérance.
“We must fan the flame of hope that has been given to us.” (Letter on the Jubilee Year of Hope, February 11, 2022)
The five sub themes for Catholic Education week explore ways to live out Pope Francis’ call for each one of us to be Pilgrims of Hope…
- by honouring human dignity / honorent la dignité humaine (Monday)
- by caring for creation / prennent soin de la création (Tuesday)
- by responding to the poverties in our world / luttent contre les pauvretés (Wednesday)
- by serving in solidarity / servent en solidarité (Thursday)
- by living as peacemakers / vivent en artisans de paix (Friday)
Catholic Education Week Prayer
Hope is our calling, O Lord,
and the destination of our pilgrim journeys.
As we mark this Jubilee Year of hope,
keep our eyes focused on Jesus,
and on the hope he reveals to us.
All our hope is in you, O God, in the name of Jesus
our Lord and companion.
Amen

Student Illness—Staying in During Recess
Students who are ill should be kept home where they are most comfortable and can get better, sooner. A child who is too ill to go out for recess is too ill to be at school. Your co-operation to keep your child home when he/she is ill is greatly appreciated.
WINTER SEASON REMINDERS
Winter season is here! Please assist us in encouraging your children to dress appropriately for the cold weather. When on yard supervision, teachers monitor if children are wearing their boots, hats, gloves and scarves. We want our students to feel comfortable out-doors and not get chilled because of inappropriate winter dress. During the winter season, the school receives calls from concerned parents as to how we determine when children will or will not be allowed outside for recess. On extremely cold days, we limit the amount of time that students spend out of doors. We obtain our weather information from the Environment Canada Weather Information Line and follow School Board guidelines. With the exception of these occasions, all children will go out for recess and the lunch break. We remind all students to dress appropriately for the weather.
For our younger students, it would be helpful if parents were to label items of clothing with their child’s name, so that each person can more easily locate his/her own cloth-ing from the class coat rack area. Each term many items make their way to the “Lost and Found” bin and are never claimed. Labelled items can be returned more easily and mixed up items sorted out more readily. Please ensure that your child has an extra pair of shoes at school, to keep their feet dry and warm during wet and/or snowy weather. A change of clothing stored in a child’s back-pack, may also be a good idea for younger students.
SAFE SNOW AND PLAY
The winter season is upon us! Playing in the snow can be a lot of fun, however, our school has a rule forbidding the throwing of snowballs and the kicking of snow onto others. Students are reminded of the importance of this rule in preventing injury to others and they are encouraged to constructively use the snow that winter brings to build snow persons, sculptors, etc. Please assist us by reviewing with your child the danger in throwing/kicking snow and the importance of preventing injury to other children. This will help to make our schoolyard a safe place for all of our students during the winter season.
Kiss N Ride Reminders
Please follow these guidelines when using the Kiss and Ride program at Father Daniel Zanon
The Do’s:
* Families using the Kiss N’ Ride are reminded that children must be able to independently exit their cars to use the Kiss N’ Ride. Drivers are to remain in the driver’s seat and should never exit the vehicle to open doors or to retrieve items from the trunk of the vehicle. If this is not possible, we ask families to park their cars and walk their children to the school. The drop off and pick up lane is directly in front of the school.
* Children are to exit the car in a safe and careful manner, with their backpacks ready to avoid a long wait time in the drop off lane. Children are to exit the vehicle on the right side of the car, onto the landing, for safety purposes and proceed to the school for entry.
* Children are to be dropped off or picked up, using the drop off lane between the hours of 8:45-9:00 am and at 3:30 pm. As cars enter the school driveway from the entrance at the stop sign, please proceed in a slow and cautious manner.
* Cars may park in the parking lot in available spaces. If you are parking and walking your child to the school, please use care while walking through the parking lot to the school grounds.
* Continue to move up and through the kiss and ride lane to the very top of the lane to drop off and pick up your children to facilitate a steady flow of traffic.
* Cars are to exit the driveway in a slow and cautious manner.
The Dont’s:
Do not park or leave your vehicle while in the Kiss and Ride Lane
Do not attempt to move into the drop-off lane from the drive thru lane passing others cars
Do not block the school bus
Do not double park or block cars in the parking lot
Thank you for your anticipated and continued cooperation and support. The safety of all is our primary concern. We are confident that in working together we can have a very efficient and successful Kiss and Ride program
UPCOMING PA DAYS
Please note that Monday, January 20 is a PA Day. This day is for “Term 1 Assessment and Evaluation of Pupil Progress.” As well, Friday, February 14 is also a PA Day to support Parent-Teacher Interviews. Please note there will be no school for students on the above dates.
ALLERGY AWARENESS SCHOOL
Fr. Daniel Zanon School staff would appreciate the co-operation of the entire school community in NOT sending any lunches or snacks that contain peanuts, nuts or any other life threatening allergens, which could potentially harm a child. We would like to keep all classrooms allergen-aware. In an effort to do so, any child that brings a lunch into the classroom that contains any life threatening allergens will eat their lunch in another location in the school designated for that specific purpose. Please make sure that all of your children’s caregivers are aware of this request. We understand that students enjoy celebrating special occasions with others in the classroom; however, to ensure everyone’s safety, the policy at Fr. Daniel Zanon School is that non-edible treats only will be permitted to be shared. There are many alternatives to bringing in food for birthdays and special occasions. Some suggestions are: stickers, gift certificates, erasers, dollar store items, pencils, etc. If you would like to discuss any other ideas, please talk to your child’s teacher or the school administration.
We look forward to your understanding and co-operation in making our school safe for all students.
In Gratitude
On behalf of our entire staff at Father Daniel Zanon we would like to express our sincere gratitude to everyone for supporting our Advent and Christmas season. Thank you for donations of non perishable food items and gift cards. Thank you for spreading joy with Candy Cane Grams. Thank you for attending our Advent Mass, Advent Liturgies and Christmas concert. Thank you for attending our virtue assembly and Sing-a-long.
