First Day Procedures
On the first day of school tomorrow, Monday, August 28, 2023, the buses will follow the schedule linked below; upon arrival at school, students will report to the gym/cafeteria and will be dismissed around 8:05 as follows:
6th grade students to cafeteria
7th grade students to homeroom
8th grade students to homeroom

Chromebook Devices
Students are not permitted to bring their own Chromebooks from home. We have a new system for Chromebook use this year that students will learn about tomorrow. Students will not actually be using Chromebooks until later in the week. Look for an update in next week's newsletter regarding Chromebook procedures for this school year.

JWMS Back-To-School Night 23-24
Athletics Update
The following information is for 7th and 8th grade students wishing to participate in cross country or softball this fall. 6th graders are not eligible to participate in athletics.
- Students must register for fall sports on ParentVUE. See the ParentVue Support Guide (SPANISH) for help.
- Students must have an up-to-date physical on file. Once a physician has completed the Pre-Participation Form, you may upload it to ParentVUE or email it to Ms. Felix at alexis_f_felix@mcpsmd.org
- Registration and physical forms are due Monday, September 11th.
- Cross country practices and softball tryouts will begin on Tuesday, September 12th.

MCPS COVID Guidelines
Immunizations
Students who have not received their vaccinations may enter school if they provide evidence of an appointment to be vaccinated by Monday, September 25, 2023. Students who have not provided documentation of the required vaccinations by Monday, September 18, 2023 must be excluded from school until such documentation is provided.
Please submit vaccination documentation to the school health office, attention Catherine Kelly (School Nurse).
Math Packets and Reading Activities
Reading
The JWMS Summer Reading Challenge is optional, but highly encouraged.
Math
The Summer Math Packet Assignments will be a grade approximately 10 - 20 points (in Practice/Prep 10% category). Students will have until September 8th to submit it to their math teacher.
SSL Opportunities
Service Learning Resources
Student Service Learning (SSL) is a Maryland state high school graduation requirement. Students may begin earning SSL in middle school through engaging in activities that serve community needs. Please visit our Student Service Learning information page and the MCPS SSL Hub for current Student Service Learning (SSL) opportunities and resources.
Service Learning Verification Forms
Students may turn in Student Service Learning (SSL) verification forms to the Julius West Counseling Office, or by emailing an image of the completed form to the Julius West SSL Coordinator, Krista Fiabane, at Krista_R_Fiabane@mcpsmd.org .

General Reminders
General Reminders:
- Arrive daily by 8:10- Warning Bell
- Bring general school supplies daily
- Cell phone use is strictly prohibited, except before school, during lunch or after school. If using a phone during these times, students are expected to use their devices appropriately. Please avoid communicating with your child, via text, during instructional hours.
