Hello St. Patrick Families,
Well, we have a whole week under our belts! I have noticed less tears in the morning and a few more smiling faces. Please continue to encourage your students to talk about their transition back to a school schedule and check in to see how they are feeling after a full week of early mornings. Practice makes progress! As you continue to prepare for the morning you will notice areas that are working well and areas that need some tweaking. Encouraging your student to provide input in regards to the morning routine will help to instill some independence and confidence.
As tough as it is to drop off our littlest friends, a simple goodbye will prove more effective than multiple statements of ‘love and missing you’. Your children feel your love for them. Your ability to say goodbye without longing provides reassurance and the idea that the children are in a safe place and that you will be there for them at dismissal. Elongating a goodbye proves to raise doubt and insecurity. Our children follow our examples, when we show confidence in the drop off routine, our students begin to feel that confidence and display it themselves.
This week the younger students and I reviewed the names of feelings and emotions. We discussed how to recognize facial expressions that give clues to how someone is feeling. In the older grades we are discussing transitions and new routines. We are getting reacquainted and I am collecting ideas regarding what your students would like to know more about. There is always room for “Smore” learning in regards to emotional regulation, effective communication, and academic challenges. We have a cozy campfire in our room for small group meetings and Lunch Bunches. I’m excited to reconnect with everyone and for our growth minded conversations to continue.
