Standard Response Protocol (SRP) Drill for October-LOCKDOWN
School safety is critical to high quality learning and the Manitowoc Public School District utilizes the K12 Standard Response Protocol (SRP/SRM) for all schools. The SRP provides five safety response protocols. Those five responses are SECURE - LOCKDOWN - EVACUATE - SHELTER - HOLD. The SRP provides for a standard response that is shared with students, staff, visitors and with our first responders from the Fire and Police Departments.
Each month throughout the school year, all schools will train on one of the five responses. The training is designed to create knowledge, answer questions, and build familiarity for all students, staff and visitors. This month the Jackson community will be practicing a LOCKDOWN. A LOCKDOWN would occur if an intruder were trying to enter the building. Students work hard to prepare students about why we practice the SRP Drills and prepare them ahead of time. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out.

Animals on Jackson Campus
Pets are amazing! They bring so many positives to our everyday lives. Unfortunately, we can't have animals on campus any times during school hours (7:25-3:45).
Jackson families, keep these things in mind regarding pets on campus:
- Many students have allergies to animals.
- Some students are afraid of animals.
- Animals can be unpredictable. There are many students on the playground before and after school. A dog that is usually friendly, may be overwhelmed by the crowd, get scared and bite.
If your pet loves to go for car rides for drop off or pick up, they need to stay in the car. If you have additional concerns or questions, feel free to reach out to the office. Thank you for understanding.
SFA Chat-With Mr. Sleger
SFA is up and running strong at Jackson! Our routines, structures, and engagement are very high. The week of October 14th , I will begin assessing Roots students. This year all elementary schools will begin new SFA groups one week AFTER the quarter ends. This allows teachers time to
collaborate when creating new SFA and intervention groups.
We are in week two of implementing our SFA homework. Just a reminder: ALL students read for at
least 20 minutes Monday through Thursday nights. DO NOT forget to return your homework bag
with your book and homework log the following morning. Homework IS being tracked weekly.
Thank you for your continued support in your child’s reading journey. If you have any questions,
please feel free to contact me:

Parent & Family Involvement Team
The Parent and Familiy Involvement Team is a new team to Jackson. The Parent and Family Involvement Team is going to work hard to involve families into Jackson student learning and Jackson family events. Stay tuned for a monthly update from this new team.
Ways to fit 20 minutes of reading into a busy schedule:
~ Schedule time to read: set a specific time to read. It can be after school, after supper before bed- just choose a time that fits into your schedule.
~ Comfy spot- set aside a specific spot to read and make it nice and cozy to get lost in a book!
~ Read while you eat: If you or someone finishes eating early, you can read when you're done eating. You can also schedule reading dinners once or twice a week!
~ Keep a book on hand: Keep a book in the car, in your bag that your child can pull out and read during breaks or when waiting to do things.
~ Audiobooks- You can also listen to audiobooks. It's a great way to hear how other people interrupt reading and to hear expression.
