Primary Sources
Examples include: diaries, speeches, letters, news film footage, official records, autobiographies, poetry, drama, novels, art, music, pottery, furniture, clothing and buildings.
A few well-known examples would be the Diary of Anne Frank, the immigration records of Arnold Schwarzenegger, newspaper articles or clippings about the assassination of JFK or photos of Usain Bolt's record-breaking race in the 2008 Olympics.
Online Historical Newspapers
The full run of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper from 1841 to 1955 has been digitized and made available by the Brooklyn Public Library's local history division. Other Brooklyn-related periodicals are also available.
Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers
This Library of Congress collection includes historic newspaper pages from 1836-1922. The US Newspaper Directory can also be used to find information about American newspapers published from 1690 to the present (yes, 1690!).
Despite the look of the website, Fulton History has one of the largest digitized collections of American newspapers. Available dates range from the 1800s to the early 2000s.

This open access collection has a vast collection of images, text, moving images, physical objects and sound that can be searched or browsed in a number of ways. Try browsing by timeline or by place.
This collection of online sources for European history is maintained by Brigham Young University's Harold B. Lee Library. Find primary resources such as digitized images, documents, maps and artifacts. Many of the resources are in English, but others are in other languages. Try Google Translate to help you navigate through this rich collection.
This open access resource has a large collection of digitized cultural heritage. This includes, images, texts, sounds and videos. Be sure to check out their Pinterest boards for special collections of images!
With millions of digitized items, this collection offers a large collection of primary resources. Only works in the public domain (from before 1923) can be openly accessed.
This collection from the Cornell University Library is large collection of primary sources in American history from the antebellum period through reconstruction. This collection includes digitized pages of books and journals. See also the sister collection from the University of Michigan.
This project from the NY 3Rs Association, Inc. covers a broad range of historical, scholarly and cultural materials including photos, letters, diaries, directories, maps, newspapers, books and more.

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection
The University of Texas Libraries house a large collection of digital maps, both modern and historical. Many of the maps are very large and take a little time to load.
From the Department of Classics at the University of Cincinnati, this international bibliography covers Aegean studies, Homeric society, Indo-European linguistics and related fields. A bibliography is a list of sources (books, articles, etc.).
Electronic Tools and Ancient Near East Archives (ETANA)
This digital archive for archaeological data is a multi-institutional project from institutions such as the American Oriental Society, Case Western Reserve University, the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, SUNY Stony Brook and more.
A digital archive of significant size containing ancient to current cultural resources. This is a project of the National Institute of Informatics in Japan.
Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA)
