Chess Club
Our last Chess Club for this semester will be on Tuesday, November 12th during lunch in the Orchestra Room.
Choir at the Steelheads Game
Our choir will be performing at the Steelheads game on November 13th at 7:00pm. Choir students will meet at 6:45pm to warm up and get ready. Mrs. Betterley will send out detailed information about this to the choir families. We would love to see our Highlands community at the game, supporting our school and our choir students! This flyer has ticket details.
3rd & 4th Music Performance
Our 3rd and 4th grade classes will be performing their musical, Joust, for parents and guardians on Friday, November 15th @ 9:00am & 2:30pm.
We value time in the classroom and hope to keep our students engaged as much as possible. When we have school performances, we provide the opportunity for all students to watch the production in a school wide assembly before the parent performance(s). We ask that siblings are not excused from class to watch the performance again.
Chess Club Tournament
Our Highlands Chess Club will have a tournament on Saturday, November 16th @ 9:00am. This will take place in our gym and refreshments will be in the cafeteria. Mr. Kenny will continue to send out information to our Chess Club families.
Family Reading Week
Thank you to everyone who helped support our book fair this year! I appreciated our many volunteers as well as the families who came to shop. Book fair was a great success, and we have several new books to add to our library collection as well as additional funds to purchase books and makerspace materials in the future. Thank you, Highlands community!
Idaho Family Reading Week is actually two weeks in length. We start the challenge on November 18th, and continue through our Fall Break Week. Students who wish to participate will complete a bingo of reading challenges. These challenges involve the whole family and we encourage family participation! Those students who complete and turn the challenge sheet into Mrs. Moore by December 4th will receive a free book from Mrs. Moore's prize cart, a themed activity booklet, and a fun bookmark. They will also be entered into a drawing for our grand prize, donated gift cards from Goody's Soda Fountain (worth about $40) plus a $12 gift card from G. Willikers Toy Merchant (next door to Goody's). If you visit Goody's anytime soon, please thank them for donating to our school. We are always so thankful for community donations!
Picture Retake Day
Our picture retake day will be on Wednesday, November 20th.
Autumn Break: November 25- November 29

Language of Learning Survey
If you have not already, please consider filling out this Language of Learning Survey. Our goal is to continue developing a responsive culture of learning in our building and community. One component of this is equipping our students with academic language that helps foster student agency and efficacy. As a building wide focus, students are learning about and using Learner Dispositions. These are traits that help students grapple with a concept and achieve understanding.
Please take a few minutes to complete the following survey. We are aiming to have high participation with this survey in the Fall and Spring of this school year. We appreciate your time and feedback.
Thank you to those of you who have already filled this out. It is much appreciated!
PTO Corner
Jog A Thon Pizza Party
To celebrate the fundraising done during this year's Jog a Thon, the PTO will be hosting a school wide pizza party at 2:30pm on Friday, November 1st. We will have our monthly PTO meeting on Tuesday, November 12th @ 12:00pm in the Library. We would love to see you there!
Thank you, PTO!
Our PTO generously supports our staff and students! They already have done so much for us! Thank you for the following:

Updates
Highlands/BSD Community Event
Highlands Elementary and the Boise School District invite you to watch LIKE, a documentary that highlights how social media impacts our children's lives. This event serves as a CALL TO ACTION for parents in the Boise School District to watch LIKE together with their family, neighbors, or other groups. Discussion questions and resources are provided to facilitate conversation. Families that complete the discussion questions will be entered to win a fun family night! Please make sure to watch the film and hold your discussion by December 15th, as this will be the last opportunity to view the film.
To get started, view this flyer! If you have any questions, please reach out to Sara Nord at sara.nord@boiseschools.org
Tis' The Season
We are heading into the months where we start to see head lice. Please see this informational brochure. If you need any support from our health office, we are here to help. If you have any questions, please reach out.
Yearbooks
Please see this link to order yearbooks!
Lost & Found & Tupperware
Please consider labeling your student's personal belongings. Our Lost & Found fills up quickly! All items are donated at the end of each quarter. Daily announcements are made and teachers walk their classes through to look at the items piled up, but please stop by and take a look before the end of quarter!
When packing cold lunch or other items stored in tupperware, please consider sending plastic containers rather than glass and putting your student's name on it. This helps to keep spills safe and easy to clean.
Educational Support Videos (Math)
Please see this Youtube channel provided by our district math coaches to see instructional strategies used in the classroom.
Pets on the Property
As much as we adore our furry friends, we love having a clean and safe learning space more. If pets are brought to the school yard before or after the school day, please help us keep our beautiful new building, our field, and our turf/playground clean by picking up pet droppings. We do not allow pets on the property during the school day and we don't allow pets in the building.
We have added additional pet dropping pick up stations around our property this year. Please use the resources provided to maintain a clean school setting. Thank you for your help and support in keeping our learning environment clean!

Please see this flyer for information about a district book study that is being offered.
