What is Happening in Spanish Class?
Spanish Newsletter 4: el 15 de mayo de 2024
¡Hola y feliz primavera! As we begin to wrap up the year, Lothrop Spanish students at all four grade levels are working on several fun projects that showcase their creativity while combining many of the themes, skills, and vocabulary that we’ve studied throughout the year.
Since January, students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades have completed (level-adjusted) units on family, descriptions, hobbies, and professions, leading to lots of great discussions (in Spanish!) on students’ career interests or pastimes. Fourth and fifth graders recently enjoyed reading a comic strip called “¿Qué quieres ser de mayor?” (“What do you want to be when you’re older?”) that also featured some controversy, with a bully falsely claiming that certain jobs, like “piloto” or “bombero” (firefighter) could not be done by women; Lothrop students knew better, and were happy to see the bully proved wrong by the end. In the second lesson of this mini-unit, students’ acting talents were front-and-center, as they had the opportunity to choose characters to portray while I narrated the comic. I was blown away by how students managed to convey strong emotions and humor while delivering challenging lines in their second language!
All of these units culminated in our “biografía de un pariente” project, wherein students combined all of their vocabulary from recent units, along with some phrases we learned last year, to write a brief biography of a real or imaginary family member. Sixth graders have begun to wrap up their version of this project—check out some photo examples below!
As we enter the home stretch, middle schoolers will embark on a final project touching on some of these same themes, but in a different grammatical context (describing themselves rather than a relative). I will encourage students to bring home their excellent work to share with their families and caregivers, so please keep an eye out in coming weeks.
Third graders are wrapping up their “farm animals” unit, and their projects are coming along nicely—more to come on that next week, so stay tuned.
¡Gracias por leer y nos vemos!
Library Books!
The last day for students to check out library books will be May 24th. All books are due by June 5th. I sent out overdue notices earlier this week. These notices are reminders for overdue books. They are not fines. Please email me if you have any questions. Thank you!

Otter Valley Unified Union Budget Input Survey
Dear Otter Valley Unified Union Community,
We hope that this letter finds you well. As members of our community, your input and feedback are essential to our success as a school district.
As you may be aware, the 2024-2025 (FY25) Otter Valley Unified Union School District budget proposals have unfortunately failed to gain approval in the past two attempts. We believe the proposed budgets were fiscally responsible, met the needs of the district, and maintained the high quality of PreK-12 education that has been traditionally expected by the community. While this is undoubtedly a setback, we remain committed to ensuring the best possible education for all of our PreK-12 students and will continue to work until we get a voter-approved budget.
We are reaching out to request your thoughts and insights regarding the FY25 budget. Your input plays a vital role in ensuring the budget aligns with the values and expectations of you, our community members. We want to understand what aspects of the budget resonate with you, and where you believe improvements can be made. Your feedback will be carefully reviewed and considered as we work towards crafting a revised budget proposal that reflects the priorities of our community.
Please take a moment to share your thoughts with us by completing the following four-question, anonymous survey. Click here to access the survey. You can also Reach Out! to provide additional feedback (click here to Reach Out!).
Thank you for your ongoing support and engagement with our district's endeavors. Together we can create a budget that serves the best interests of our students and community as a whole.
Sincerely,
Laurie Bertrand, OVUU Board Chair
Kristin Hubert, RNESU Superintendent
Dress Code for Learners
Learners are expected to dress for school in a manner that contributes to an environment that is conducive to learner learning and success. As the weather warms up be mindful of the dress code when sending students to school. The Student Handbooks states, "Dress should not expose the chest, abdomen, navel, buttocks, or underwear. Shoes must be worn at all times. Hats or hoods are ONLY allowed in classrooms with teacher permission." Thank you!
Lost & Found
Throughout the school year we have many “lost” articles of clothing, lunch boxes and jewelry. These items are organized and displayed in the lower office of the main building. Families are welcome to check this area at any time. If items are not claimed they will be donated to local charitable organizations at the end of each month so we do not have a large accumulation of lost items.
Families, please put your child’s name on all clothing, lunch boxes, etc. This way the articles will be more easily returned to your child.
Toys, Games, & Trading Cards
Please have students leave toys, games and Pokemon or other trading cards (or similar items) at home. Thank you!
