Dear OUSD Community,
In recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, Orange Unified School District is proud to have partnered with The Museum of Teaching and Learning (MOTAL) and Santiago Canyon College (SCC) to present to our students and community the exhibit A Class Action: The Grassroots Struggle for School Desegregation in California. This traveling exhibit tells the story of the famous civil rights court case, Mendez et al. v. Westminster School District of Orange County et al., that ended segregation in public schools across the State of California. The court’s decision in this case also had a powerful impact on the 1954 United States Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education that "separate education facilities are inherently unequal” and the subsequent desegregation of schools across the country.
All are welcome to join us at the grand opening/ribbon-cutting event on September 27 at 6 p.m. in front of the library at SCC, named in honor of local activist Lorenzo A. Ramirez, a former resident of the El Modena area of Orange and one of the plaintiffs in the Mendez case. In March of 1945, Ramirez joined Thomas Estrada, William Guzman, Frank Palomillo, and Gonzalo Mendez in a Los Angeles County Superior Court class-action lawsuit suing the El Modena, Santa Ana, Garden Grove, and Westminster School Districts, respectively, for discrimination against Mexican students (Mendez et al. v. Westminster School District of Orange County et al.). Family members of those involved in the case will be at the event’s grand opening event to share their family legacies firsthand.
Orange Unified School District’s Board of Education voted to rename the El Modena High School Library in honor of Ramirez at the May 12, 2011, Board of Education meeting. The Ramirez Family had previously been honored for their “significant and lasting contribution to the quality of education in Orange, California, and across the nation” at an OUSD Board meeting in March 2011.
A Class Action will be open to the public until December. We encourage our community members to visit the display to learn more about our local history and the positive impact that one’s legacy can leave on our community.
Warmest Regards,
Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D.
Superintendent of Schools
EDGE Employee of the Month
Congratulations to our EDGE Employee of the month for September!
Allison Rudd, 4th Grade Teacher, California Elementary School
Allison goes above and beyond to serve the staff and students of the Orange Unified School District in ways that reflect the core values of OUSD’s EDGE.
California Elementary Principal Misty Brunasso had this to say about Allison:
Allison Rudd is beginning her 22nd year at California iInspire Academy. Ms. Rudd is one of those teachers you come across once in a great while. Allison gets to know every student in her class as a whole person. She is able to see exactly what each child brings to the community, and her whole teaching approach involves finding and using children's unique strengths to help them. At the same time, Allison has strong academic expectations and shows her students every day that she believes they can succeed. We are so proud to be represented by Allison Rudd as employee of the month! Go Bears!

In Our Schools: Portola PREP Day
Portola Middle School hosted its inaugural PREP Day in partnership with the OUSD Career Technical Education (CTE) Public Service Pathways at Orange High School and Villa Park High School.
Portola Middle School’s PREP days outline the schoolwide learning outcomes – Perseverance, Responsibility, Excellence, and Preparedness – with the intent to strengthen students’ college and career readiness.
PREP days support Portola’s efforts to regularly incorporate college and career readiness activities while strengthening the middle and high school CTE Pathways. Plans are in place to continue PREP days once a month, with October’s event focused on the
arts in alignment with CTE.
Schoolwide activities at the initial PREP event highlighted site and District initiatives, including Verizon Innovative Learning (VILS), AVID, and Social Emotional Learning (SEL) that were embedded in the day’s events. Police officers, firefighters, police motorcycles, and fire trucks from the Orange Police Department and Orange Fire Department helped in creating relevance and engagement for all students.
