Dear Families,

I hope that everyone is having a fantastic summer, and that your Pioneer has had some time to rest and recharge. Can you believe that school starts in a few short weeks? We are very excited to welcome back our students and families to EHMS. Last year, we celebrated huge growths in academics and we are going to carry that momentum into 24-25. We encourage all families to get involved and take advantage of all the opportunities in Elyria City Schools. This newsletter contains lots of important dates. Please review so that you and your Pioneer are ready for a successful start to the year. As always, don't hesitate to reach out to our main office if you have any questions!

5th Grade WEB Information

Staggered Start

Like last year, we are beginning with a staggered start for all middle school students. Your student(s) will come to school for 1 of the staggered start days based on the first letter of their last name.

Here are the dates:

8/19 Staggered Start 1st day for Students with Last Names A-G

8/20 Staggered Start 1st day for Students with Last Names H-O

8/21 Staggered Start 1st day for Students with Last Names P-Z

This is a great opportunity for students to meet their teachers, go through their schedule, learn expectations, and prepare for a great school year. All students return on 8/22. If you have questions, please call our main office:)

Cell Phones and Attire

As we begin the new year, we ask that you please review the ECS Code of Conduct with your Pioneer. It outlines the expectations for all ECS students while at Heights. It's been linked below for your convenience. As always, if you have questions, don't hesitate to reach out to our main office.

We often get questions about attire and cell-phones. Hoodies, and similar tops or jackets with hoods, are "fan favorites" when it comes to school attire. We like them, too, but not when they are worn up and over the head during the school day.

The district's Student Code of Conduct provides direction on headgear, stating that it may not be worn over a person's head or scalp (excluding headgear that's worn for religious or medical reasons.) Hoods can make it difficult to identify an individual in an emergency, and they can also be a distraction in class. Please remind students that hoods may not be worn up during the school day.

The Student Code of Conduct also offers guidance on attire. Clothing must be school appropriate and may not present a health or safety hazard or disrupt the educational environment. Pants and tops must fit properly and be in good repair; crop tops are not permitted.

Additionally, footwear must be school appropriate--slippers and slipper socks are not permitted. Blankets also may not be worn in school.

Students may bring their cell phones to school but they must be turned off and put away during the day unless they are used as a part of a teacher-directed lesson in class. Same rules apply to Bluetooth headphones--they may not be worn during the school day.

If you need to reach your student during the school day, please contact the main office and our staff will convey a message or assist you in reaching your student.

Traffic Flow Reminder

Please review the map to help our drop-off and pick-up times run safely and smoothly. *IMPORTANT- Please make sure that our handicapped parking spaces are only used by designated vehicles. Other cars should not use them during drop-off/pick-up times.

Family Open House

Please be sure to come to Heights on August 22rd from 4:30-5:30pm for our Open House. It's a great time to meet your teachers, tour the building, and get ready for a successful school year. If you have questions, please feel free to call our office.

School Hours

Our first bell rings daily at 7:20 am, and the late bell rings at 7:30. We dismiss at 2:15 pm. Please review the traffic flow reminder to help with an orderly drop-off and dismissal.
