Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope your student has begun to adjust to the world of high school and all it has to offer! As we approach the end of the month, here are a few reminders of a few opportunities available to your freshman student.

STRETCH

Teachers are always available for extra help. STRETCH (teachers' office hours) are held from 8:35 am to 8:55 am Monday through Thursday. Students may also make arrangements to work with teachers during their lunch hour, so long as students schedule this time with their teacher in advance.

Math Tutoring

Free math tutoring is offered to all students Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 pm in room #204 with Ms. Shull.

NHS Clubs & Activities

A wide variety of Norman High clubs are offered to students to participate in! Next week, posted around the school, your student will find the NHS Clubs QR code, in which students can sign up and join a club(s) of their choice. Although many clubs meet during upperclass lunch, freshman students who are in "Good Standing" will have the opportunity to attend club meetings once monthly and take part in the various club activities throughout the school year. Students in "Good Standing" are those students passing all courses and currently have a clean discipline record.

If you have not applied this year you will be charged FULL prices after Oct. 1st.

1. We will continue to hold students accountable to be wearing their 23-24 Student ID around their neck if they are INSIDE our building. Students will receive 2 of them with a lanyard at the beginning of the year in advisory and then they must pay for a new one if they come to school without one. After approximately a week, consequences will begin for not wearing an ID.

2. Students will be given an Access Card that will get them into the College and Career doors beginning at 7:25am and ending at 4:15pm each day. We have worked with our office staff to provide coverage at the College and Career doors from 7:25am until school begins. Our office personnel will make sure that students who do enter with an access card are still arriving with their ID around their neck. We will NOT require that students enter one at a time with their card and we know that groups of students will still enter all together with just one person's card. The card is simply to allow students who park outside of those doors or who go to the athletic buildings that they can get back in the building WITHOUT SOME STUDENT OPENING THE DOOR FOR THEM. We will need to retrain our students that they NEVER have to open the doors for anyone because all students should have their Access Card.

Students should have received their Access Card with their 2 ID's through Advisory during the first week of school, if you student still doesn't have an ID or Access card have them go to Student Services.

  • Middle School and High School students from both the home and visiting schools will be expected to have a student ID in order to enter the game (This is a new addition to the guidelines as of August 28, 2023)

  • Clear plastic tote bags are permitted (1 per person)
  • Non-transparent clutch wallets no larger than 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches are allowed (1 per person)
  • Family care items such as diaper bags are permitted
  • Bags necessary for approved medical equipment are permitted
  • No other bags/backpacks are allowed

  • Alcohol (in all forms)
  • Bags, backpacks, fanny packs and hard binocular cases
  • Beach balls, footballs or any other sporting equipment
  • Coolers, containers or ice chests

  • Noisemakers of any type that could cause stop in play
  • Pets (with the exception of registered service animals)

  *NPS reserves the right to revoke/remove spectators at any time who refuse to comply with spectator guidelines*

Norman High School will be giving the digital PSAT to 9th & 11th graders & the Pre-ACT to 10th graders on Wednesday, October 11. District loaned devices will be utilized for digital testing.

Seniors are not required to attend school on this day, so we encourage the 2024 graduates to take advantage of this virtual day by working on post graduation activities such as college applications, completing internship work, PFL and I-CAP requirements or setting up a tour of a tech center, etc. (see below for MNTC Tour). NHS will also have designated study/research/work areas identified for you should you wish to attend school on Oct. 11.

Moore Norman Technology Center will be providing an exclusive tour for NPS SENIORS of their vast facility and departments Wednesday, October 11th from 9:30am - 12pm. MNTC provides career programs, short term classes as well as certification and licensing classes in a wide variety of industries.

Transportation is provided from Norman High School. Feel free to preview programs at MNTC at MNTC.edu. Students may sign up for the MNTC tour until October 9th. Please scan the QR code to register or email Beth Patterson at bpatterso2@normanps.org.

There are several test preparation resources available to students that range from free to varying fees for participation. Concordance tables for the ACT and SAT underscore that preparing for one test is also good preparation for the other, and we recommend students take both the ACT and the SAT, as often individuals have a proclivity to score higher on one than the other....

I am writing to let you know about an exciting recruiting event that we have planned for this year at Northern Oklahoma College’s Stillwater Campus. Our annual Northern Encounter recruiting event is set to be more dynamic and student-centered than ever, and we believe it offers a fantastic opportunity for students from Norman Public Schools to get a firsthand experience of life on our campus.

Event Details:

Date: Wednesday, October 4th

Time: Registration from 8:45 AM – 9:00 AM Event Starts: 9:00 to 11:00 AM

Location: Northern Oklahoma College - Stillwater Campus. 615 N. Monroe, Stillwater

At Northern Encounter students will receive schedules mirroring the schedule of an average NOC student. After a brief welcome, they will disperse to classrooms to attend short "mini-classes" delivered by our NOC faculty and members of the Stillwater community, including State Representative Trish Ranson. They will also receive loads of information about applying, funding and attending NOC in Stillwater, as well as have the opportunity to speak with representatives from each of our academic departments. Our goal is to provide students from Norman Public Schools a genuine glimpse into the average day at NOC Stillwater.

FAFSA will open in Dec. Date to be announced.

Myth: Parents without Social Security Numbers (SSNs) (i.e., undocumented) will not be able to contribute their information to a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Fact: Federal Student Aid (FSA) is implementing a new process that will allow parents who do not have an SSN to obtain an FSA ID. FSA has not yet shared the details of that process, but they have said it will use the TransUnion Credit Bureau to verify peoples’ identities. Parents who are undocumented will need an FSA ID to complete the FAFSA online, but those who are not able to verify their identity through the new process will have the option of completing a paper FAFSA form.

Myth: Students whose families own farms or small businesses will see their federal student aid decrease significantly.

Fact: While the new formula does require assets from family farms and small businesses to be reported in some cases, financial aid awards will be impacted differently by the new formula for determining federal financial aid. Families with adjusted gross income of $60,000 or less will not be required to report assets at all and students from families earning up to 175% of the

federal poverty limit will automatically receive a maximum Pell Grant. Families required to report the net value of small businesses and family farms may see an increase in their student aid index. Only a small percentage (12) of assets is used in the Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation. The new formula will increase the number of students who will be eligible for a Pell Grant overall.

Myth: Students with siblings in college will automatically no longer be eligible for Pell Grants.

Fact: Students from low-income households will likely maintain their eligibility for a Pell Grant and that population will grow when compared with the current formula for determining federal financial aid. At higher income levels, students with siblings in college may see their Pell eligibility diminish or disappear, but they may still be eligible for institutional aid. See here for an estimator of the impact by income level.

Myth: Students and parents will be able to access the online FAFSA form without an FSA ID.

Fact: Everyone will need an FSA ID to access the FAFSA. The process for obtaining an FSA ID will remain the same as it is now for people who have an SSN. It is available now and takes one to three business days to complete. Parents who do not have an SSN will go through a new process that will launch at the same time as the new FAFSA form.

Myth: The custodial parent is always whose information should be reported for dependent students.

Fact: If the custodial parent provides the most financial support for the student, that parent (and their spouse/partner, if applicable), is the parent information whose information needs to be submitted on the form. If the parent who provides the most financial support is the non-custodial parent, that person (and their spouse/partner, if applicable) should be reporting their

information on the form.

Myth: Both parents must complete the FAFSA.

Fact: Only the parent (and their spouse/partner, if applicable) who contributes the most financially to their child’s upbringing completes the FAFSA.

Myth: Students will be required to enter their gender, race, and ethnicity on the FAFSA.

Fact: While those questions will be a part of the student demographic section, “decline to answer” is an option for each question. The information provided in this section will not be used to determine a student’s federal, state, or institutional aid or eligibility. The information will not even be shared with any state agency or institutions.

Myth: The FAFSA will be available in the 11 most common languages.

Fact: The FAFSA will be available in English and Spanish. Language translation services will be available over the phone for students and families needing additional language support.

Myth: Students must start the FAFSA because parents must be invited to contribute.

Fact: Students or their parents may initiate a FAFSA. The form will only be considered complete once everyone has completed their sections.

Myth: Even though a student or their parent has given consent for their federal tax information to be transferred to the FAFSA, they can revoke it at any time.

Fact: Once a FAFSA contributor has provided approval and consent for use and disclosure of federal tax information (FTI) for a FAFSA cycle, they cannot revoke consent for that cycle. The ability to revoke consent is not needed for FAFSA purposes because the FAFSA contributor is providing a one-time consent for a specific tax year and an annual consent is required for each

FAFSA cycle.

Myth: Both parties on a joint tax return must provide consent for FTI to be transferred to a FAFSA.

Fact: Only one party on a joint tax return is required to obtain an FSA ID and provide consent for FTI to be transferred.

Oklahoma Hall of Fame Scholarship

The Oklahoma Heritage Association and Gaylord-Pickens Museum will award one Oklahoma high school senior the Oklahoma Hall of Fame Scholarship. The $6,000 scholarship, which is dispersed to the winning student over four years, is based on the student’s leadership roles, civic and community involvement, academic achievement, and knowledge and pride of our great state. Students must commit to attending an Oklahoma college or university to be considered, and students must be nominated for this scholarship by a teacher, administrator or any other adult not related to the student.

QuestBridge invites applications from current high school seniors who have demonstrated academic excellence in the face of economic obstacles. Don't Text and Drive Scholarship

The purpose of this scholarship is to help students understand the risks of texting while driving. Applicants must be a high school freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior or a current or entering college or graduate school student of any level. Home schooled students are also eligible. There is no age limit. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen or legal resident. To apply, complete the application form including a 140-character message about texting while driving. The top 10 applications will be selected as finalists. The finalists will be asked to write a full length 500- to 1,000-word essay about texting while driving. The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The Oklahoma P.E.O. Chapter wants to sponsor a high school senior girl that qualifies and is interested in the $2500 STAR Scholarship. Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Atlas Shrugged Essay Contest

Students in 12th grade, college or graduate school may apply. Awards include: One 1st Place award of $10,000; three 2nd Place awards of $2,500; and five 3rd Place awards of $500. Type of Awards: Five (5) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded to five (5) college or technical school students, payable to their school. Four awards will be for video work while one will be for still photography.

One (1) $2,500 scholarship will be awarded to one (1) graduate student, payable to their school, for video work.

Five (5) Digital SLR Cameras will be awarded to five (5) high school students. (High school applicants should only submit still photographs. The video awards are for college and graduate students only.)

Focus of work and entries: PHOTOJOURNALISM. (Please see the 2022 or previous years’ scholarship recipients to view examples of winning videos and photographs.) Scholarships will be awarded to those students whose work “tells a story”. This is a fairly broad topic and may include a variety of subject matter and approaches (breaking news, sporting events, etc.) Please keep in mind that, for the still photography submissions, we are NOT looking for “art” photography.

National Space Club and Foundation Keynote Scholar Application

Since 2013, The National Space Club and Foundation has offered the opportunity for a student to give the keynote address at the National Space Club and Foundation's annual Goddard Memorial Dinner, one of the space industry's most prestigious gatherings. The student must intend to pursue a career in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) fields, be academically strong and excel in public speaking. In addition to speaking at the Goddard Memorial Dinner, the individual selected will also receive a scholarship, in the amount of $15,000. This scholarship is awarded to a U.S. citizen, and is open to seniors in High School through graduate students studying at an accredited educational institution in the United States, who has definite plans to pursue a career in the STEM fields.

Conditions of Eligibility

The applicant must be a U.S. citizen.

The scholarship is open to seniors in high school through graduate students.

The applicant must have the intention of pursuing a career in the STEM fields and plan to attend an accredited U.S. college or university to follow a course of study to pursue a career in the STEM field, with a preference for those with space related interests.

The applicant can only use the $15,000.00 scholarship towards tuition for the 2024-2025 academic year.

The applicant must not have previously spoken at the Dr. Robert H. Goddard Memorial Dinner.

The applicant may apply for any of the scholarships offered by the National Space Club and Foundation (Olin E Teague Scholarship and/or Keynote Scholarship) in the same year, but may only win one in the same year.

Education Matters Scholarship

The Education Matters Scholarship gives you a chance to state why education matters to you. Applicants can explain the value they hope to receive from college and what they would do to convince the college cynics. One applicant will be awarded a $5,000 scholarship. Applicants must be 14 years of age or older at the time of application. Essays must be 250 words or less.

Driver Education Initiative Award – Annual Scholarship Opportunity

The Topic of this year’s essay submissions deals with the serious implications of being a driver. In America, an average of 34,000 people die each year as a result of driving. This is more people who have died in one year as a result of driving, than the total number of American soldiers who have died from war in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. The total number of Americans who die within the span of two years as a result of driving is more than the total number of American deaths from the Vietnam war. This is to say, driving is more dangerous and deadly for our nation than being involved in combat, and highlights the serious consequences of being negligent on the road.* Please note, to limit the number of entries, the minimum word requirement for the essay submissions is 750 words. Chancellor Hans Brisch Scholarship Program

Oklahoma high schools may nominate one senior for the Chancellor Hans Brisch Scholarship Program. If you would like to be nominated, please return a resume to Katie Cortest in the freshman office, organized as follows:

PART A-Personal Information: Include full name of student, student's mailing address, daytime phone number, and Oklahoma public college or university the student plans to attend.

PART B- Community Service: On a separate sheet or sheets, please attach a list of ways in which you have improved the school learning environment and/or bettered the community. (This category is weighted heavily. Please provide detailed supporting information).

PART C- Outstanding Leadership: On a separate sheet or sheets, please list the outstanding leadership characteristics of the nominee and provide examples of demonstrated leadership.

PART D- High Academic Achievement: On a separate sheet or sheets, please list evidence of the nominee's high academic achievement, including GPA and academic honors.
