Congratulations to our Women's basketball team on winning the conference tournament championship this past week. The team finished undefeated in the regular season and conference tournament. They now move onto the state playoffs where they will host Columbia on Tuesday night at 6:00 PM. Congratulations also to Lailana Harris on being named the Conference Player of the Year and to Coach Aaron Burke on being named the Coach of the Year. Great job by all.

This week is a little different at PCHS as we do not have school for students on Monday or Tuesday. Students will return to school on Wednesday of this week. Enjoy the short break and come back on Wednesday ready and refreshed.

Wednesday will also be our 8th grade transition event. During the school day all 8th graders from PCMS will tour the high school and learn about the great things that can become involved with once they arrive at the high school. 8th grade parents and students are encouraged to attend Wednesday night to learn even more about the course offerings at the. high school and how to get involved in our clubs, band, drama productions and sports. This is an informative session to help parents and students be prepared to register for high school classes the following week as they prepare to become Pirates.

Good luck to our Women's Soccer team as they play at Edenton on Tuesday at 5:00 PM, Currituck on Wednesday at 6:00 PM and on Thursday when they host Albemarle School at 4:00 PM.

Baseball will travel to Northside on Thursday with their game beginning at 5:00 PM.

This may be a short week but lots of great things can be accomplished in a short time. We look forward to seeing all of our students back on Wednesday ready to work and learn as we move toward the end of the 3rd nine weeks.

Drama Department: Auditions for High School Musical are THIS WEEK! If you are interested in auditioning you will need to fill out this google form https://forms.gle/6QSSNEpixFQd6fcY7.

Dance Auditions will be on Wednesday, February 22nd, during forth period.

Regular Auditions will be on February 23rd, throughout the day. You will be pulled out of class to attend auditions and then sent back to class afterward. You will need to prepare a monologue no longer than 1 minute and 8-16 bars of a school-appropriate song.

Our school nurse will be conducting vision screenings on all 9th grade students. These screenings will take place between February 22 and March 17. Parents will be notified via referral letter if your student needs further evaluation.

If you do NOT want your child to participate in this screening, please notify the school nurse as soon as possible.

Mrs. Roberta Heath has transformed out media center into a literacy and learning hub. She also makes technology integration into practical classroom learning easy for our staff. Mrs. Heath is a graduate of PCHS and she shows off her Pirate Pride in all that she does. PCHS is lucky to have a media coordinator as gifted and committed as Mrs. Heath.

Ms. Martha Osuna does an excellent job bringing Spanish to life at Perquimans County High School. She is passionate about ensuring that the students enrolled in the Spanish courses not only learn the content but also the customs and observable holidays. As the advisor to the Spanish Club, Ms. Osuna provides opportunities for the entire PCHS student body to participate in celebrations such as The Day of the Dead and Carnaval de Barranquilla. Ms. Osuna is an active member on various school-based committees where she collaborates with other staff members to plan and implement initiatives to make learning rigorous, relevant and fun. Hats off to this PQ Champion, Ms. Martha Osuna!

Mrs. Kim Jackson provides a safe and positive learning environment for all students. She allows her students to be creative while setting high expectations for all. She supports her students in and out of the classroom. Mrs. Jackson is very active in our professional learning community and is willing to try new ideas in her classroom. Mrs. Jackson is a PQ Champion at PCHS!

SECU will provide FAT CAT youth members, ages 12 and under along with Zard youth members, ages 13-19, with scholarships for summer camp registration and associated fees. Awards will be given in the amount of $500 to one FAT CAT and one Zard member for each branch that receives qualifying applications.

Each entry should include an application and either an original drawing or written essay (250 words or less) about the youth’s dream summer camp experience. Parents and legal guardians may find official contest rules and instructions to apply at ncsecu.org/summercampawards.

The Office of Career and Technical Education at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction will host the 3rd Annual #IAmComputerScience(#IAmCS) Summit in Spring 2023. This year's summit is for North Carolina elementary to high school students interested in Computer Science, IT, and STEM Education. Our theme will be "Make Way: Youth Accelerator Fusing Robotics, Design, and Gaming". Our summit will be an opportunity for North Carolina youth to connect with peers passionate about these interest areas and challenge students to break down barriers within Computer Science, IT, and STEM Education.

Our student-led summit is spearheaded by a phenomenal group of passionate high school volunteers—who serve as "Student Leaders". These students have an immense passion for Computer Science, IT, and STEM Education; leadership; and youth empowerment. They work hard behind the scenes to prepare for this in-person event, hence why Student Leaders will receive volunteer hours, awards, and gifts as a thank-you for their service with this year’s summit. We are currently looking to build a dynamic team of Student Leaders to innovate, organize, and potentially lead aspects of our third annual summit!

We require Student Leaders to attend our in-person Student Leader Orientation and the in-person Summit, all of which are expected to take place during the week in late Spring—transportation, a hotel room, and absence notes for school will be provided to Student Leaders. If selected for this opportunity, we require that Student Leaders uphold our contract until the summit date.

The #IAmCS campaign was founded in 2019, and even during this short time, the campaign has been able to impact over 700+ students. We aim to move the needle on equity-focused strategies to strengthen the computer science landscape for all North Carolina students. It would be absolutely wonderful if you, your school, and your district would spread the word about our Student Leader opportunity to your students! Below is the form for high school youth to apply. Additionally, attached is a flyer to assist you in sharing the opportunity. Please view the attached flyers to learn about the Governor’s Page Program! This is an incredible opportunity for students across the state to travel to Raleigh and not just learn about but participate in state government through a hands-on experience.

The experience spans over four days and is open to NC high school juniors, seniors, and recent graduates. For in-person page programs, students will receive a $200 stipend to help compensate for any costs associated with the program.

The page program also offers special weeks dedicated to under-represented groups in state government, such as the Black Student Leaders Governor’s Page Week and the Latinx Governor’s Page Week. These weeks are for students who identify as Black or African-American and Latinx or Hispanic, respectively, and exist as an attempt to further diversity and equity in our state government.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application opened Oct 1st. If you intend to attend college or think you might attend college after high school, and are looking for money to help pay for school, you will need to complete the 23-24 FAFSA Application.

It is never too early to start thinking about funding college and start the scholarship application process. Please check out the Student Scholarship Spreadsheet for a list of current and active scholarships.

It is post graduation planning season! Ms.Gray, the College and Career Advisor, will continue to meet with juniors 1:1 to discuss their post graduation plans.

COA C2C Day:

COA is hosting our annual College to Career Signing Event on March 23rd. This event will be held on the Elizabeth City Campus beginning at 4 PM. It does include the opportunity for a $500 scholarship as well. I have included the flyer below.

Future Teacher of North Carolina: Eastern Symposium (FTNCES)

The summer 2023 Future Teacher of North Carolina: Eastern Symposium (FTNCES) will be held at East Carolina University. The Eastern NC Symposium is a collaboration among East Carolina University, the University of North Carolina-Pembroke and the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The Symposium takes the place of the Pirate Institute for Rural Aspiring Teacher Educators program that ECU offered last summer.

The summer 2023 symposium is a free two-day experience with an option to reside on campus for one night in an ECU residence hall. The symposium will offer rising high school juniors, seniors, and current seniors an opportunity to learn about teacher education programs at several UNC universities. Please share this information with your students who are interested in becoming a teacher and others within your networks as appropriate. Accepted participants are required to attend/complete the full two-day event.

Two symposium events will be offered on different dates however, the content will be the same for each event date. Applicants should register for the event date that works best for their schedule. The Shelton Challenge is back at North Carolina Wesleyan University

The Shelton Challenge is a six-day (June 18-23, 2023) residential leadership experience to help students expand their knowledge and skills of what it takes to be an effective leader. Offered to rising 9th-grade to graduating seniors (graduating seniors included) with a 3.0+ unweighted GPA, hands-on activities focus on: personal leadership assessment and interpersonal dynamics, the role of values and ethics in leadership, leadership traits and approaches, empowering others, civic and social responsibility and goal setting. In addition to these aptitudes, students also engage in team-building activities like low- and high-ropes courses, rock climbing walls, service projects, and social activities in the evenings. The cost to attend the Shelton Challenge six-day residential program is $500. This cost includes all curriculum materials, lodging and food, low and high ropes training, transportation during the week, and night activities. With submitting the application, please mail a $100 deposit to hold space in the program. The deposit will go toward the final payment of $500. Please make all checks or money orders payable to the Shelton Challenge at N.C. Wesleyan University. Financial aid scholarships are available to applicants.

NC Wesleyan University will offer a scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to students who complete the Shelton Challenge and enroll as a full-time undergraduate student at North Carolina Wesleyan University. The scholarship is renewable for each academic year (fall/spring) if the student maintains an overall GPA of at least a 2.70 (and is enrolled as a full-time student) for a maximum of four academic years.
