Greetings Stallion Community,

We had a wonderful week of school with our Stallion scholars and educators and we are all set to begin the third week of school. As a reminder, we offer free breakfast on the go from 7:15 am to 7:59 am and students first period class begins at 8:00 a.m. Below are a few updates for week 2 marking period 2.

• Monday, August 19: 6th grade class meeting with Mr. Rios & Mrs. Machin, vertical raise campus wide fundraiser and incentives. PLC's by grade level in the SCEI room.

• Tuesday, August 20: 7th grade class meeting with Mr. Rios & Mrs. Machin, vertical raise campus wide fundraiser and incentives. PLC's by content in the SCEI room. VASSP at Slider at 630 pm.

• Wednesday, August 21: Grade level PLC with Mr. Rios and Mrs. Machin. Board meeting at the DSC, recognizing Mrs. Kern and Mrs. Andrade: 25 years of service with Team SISD.

• Thursday, August 22: 8th grade class meeting with Mr. Rios & Mrs. Machin, vertical raise campus wide fundraiser and incentives.

• Friday, August 23: Students follow their daily schedule. The end of the 3 week marking period, grades will be time stamped and posted for progress reports. Teacher breakfast, pozole provided by CNS.

• Saturday, August 24: 7Game day for baseball, softball & soccer.

We wanted to remind our Stallion community about our cell phone/ear pods policy. Our policy states:

• Cell phones must be TURNED OFF at 7:45 a.m. and should remain off during the entire instructional/afterschool tutoring portion of the school day. Any cell phone out and visible during the school day including lunch time will be confiscated and must be picked up at school by a parent, regardless of how or if the student is using the phone.
• 1st Offense: Phone will be confiscated. Parents may pick it up on Friday after 3:15 p.m.
• 2nd Offense: & any time after: Phone will be confiscated. Parent may pick it up after school Friday a $15 fine is paid as per SISD Board Policy on the second offense and any offense thereafter.

When visiting our campus, it is important to bring an ID to request approval for entering our school building. Our campus is safe and secure and it provides our students a safe and supportive learning environment. Once you ring the door bell, you will be attended to by our receptionist over the door bell intercom system. You will be asked to state the purpose for your visit. If approved, our receptionist will be able to buzz you in to enter the front desk receptionist area. Note that any family member not listed on the students demographics will not be approved to visit with our Stallion scholar. A campus administrator is always available to assist you and your family. Our school office hours are Monday thru Friday, 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. If you have any questions, please contact us at 915.937.5400.

Stallion scholars make sure you are arriving on time, taking attendance for each class and actively participating. Our goal as a campus is 97% and above. We would like to provide top-tier educational experiences for our Stallion scholars this year. One way to achieve this goal is by providing various incentives for both teachers & students to increase motivation and keep morale high on our campus. Please consider supporting our Vertical Raise by contributing and/or sharing our fundraiser with your friends, families, neighbors & community members.

It is the philosophy of the Socorro Independent School District and William D. Slider Middle School that all students should maintain high standards of dress. A committee of parents, students, and teachers adopted a uniform policy for Slider Middle School.

Shirts & Required Colors:

· Students will wear a white, navy blue, or forest green collared polo shirt with or without a Slider school logo.

· White, navy blue, or forest green T-shirts will be allowed only if they have the Slider school uniform logo.

Pants/Shorts/Skirts/Skorts Required Colors and Style:

· Students will wear khaki, tan, or blue pants. No black pants or other colors will be permitted.

· Pants must be in good repair. No ripped or torn pants, please. Slits of any kind are also not permitted.

· Regular and relaxed-style pants and joggers are acceptable.

· Tights, yoga pants, wide-leg and baggy-fit pants are not acceptable.

· The length of the pants must not touch/drag along the floor, and they must fit according to the waist size of the student. “Sagging” of the pants will not be allowed on campus.

· No military style cargo pants are permitted.

· No ragged edge, daisy dukes, spandex or hot pants or short shorts are permitted.

· Shorts may not be rolled up. The length of skirts, skorts, and shorts must extend below the student’s fingertips when the student’s arms are extended at his/her sides.

· Capri style pants are permitted.

Jackets/ Sweaters Required Colors and Style:

· These must be zippered or buttoned down and can be worn as seasonably appropriate.

· Jackets/coats must not cover the Slider logo while in the building.

· Thermals, turtlenecks, or solid school colored long-sleeve shirts may be worn under the Slider logo shirts during cold weather.

· Pull-over must be a white, navy blue, or forest green color with a Slider school logo.

· No “Cookies” logos or any other clothing representing any references to drugs or alcohol or weaponry are allowed.

Accessory Dress Requirements/Restrictions:

1. Caps, hats, bandannas, headbands, stocking caps and hoods etc. may not be worn. All of these accessories need to be left at home.

2. For reasons of health and safety the following will not be allowed: sunglasses worn inside the building, and jewelry/ piercings in lips, eyebrows, nose, tongue, chin etc.

3. No weapon like or oversized jewelry is allowed, including studded leather bracelets, oversized chains, or chained wallets. Beaded jewelry that uses fish line is particularly unsafe.

4. Shoes must be worn at all times. Closed toe and closed heel shoes are required. Shoes must have hard soles and be specifically designed for outside wear. Platform shoes (greater than 1 ½ inches) are not permitted for reasons of safety. Crocs (clogs) are not allowed on campus unless approved by administration for dress-up days.

Dear 6th & 7th Grade Parents,

Socorro ISD continues in its commitment to provide all students with opportunities to prepare them for college and career readiness. In accordance with Senate Bill 2124, students entering 6th & 7th grade shall be enrolled in advanced math courses to prepare them for Algebra I in 8th grade. The pathway for advanced math is as follows:

• In the Advanced 6th-grade Math program, students will primarily focus on 6th-grade math concepts while also delving into some 7th-grade Math standards. Additionally, 6th-grade students will take the 6th-grade Math STAAR assessment at the conclusion of their 6th grade academic year.

• In the Advanced 7th-grade Math program, students will focus on the 8th grade math standards and cover a portion of the 7th-grade standards. At the end of their 7th-grade year, 7th-grade students will be evaluated through the 8th-grade Math STAAR assessment.

• 8th grade students will be taking Algebra I, which is a high school credit course.

The pathway is set up for your child to be successful after high school. Our goal is to challenge them intellectually in their high school math classes while making sure they feel fully supported through the pathway and don't feel overwhelmed or discouraged. Math achievement is the best predictor of future academic success, and we are committed to helping all students reach their full potential.

Hello Stallion Families,

Welcome back and I hope this first week went well for everyone. For those that are new to us here at Slider MS, I am the Parent and Family Liaison for the school. My primary goal is to supply resources for our families here to cover a multitude of areas. Any concerns you may have, please reach out to me so that I can assist you or get you pointed in the right direction.

Volunteers are needed and appreciated at Slider MS. The process is a quick online form that allows us to bring you in and assist with our students and participate in the different activities here at the school. Returning volunteers do need to complete a new form each school year.

Coming up on August 31st, we will be having our first Family Night Out at Southwest University Park with The EP Chihuahuas. Tickets are only $15 and Mr. Rios will be throwing out the first pitch. Tickets are first come, first serve so grab them before they’re gone. The link to tickets is on the attached flyer.

Don’t forget to join us on the Remind App to get this information faster. I promise to keep the announcements to a minimum, but it allows us to answer questions and our Volunteer Coordinator is on there as well for those interested in that opportunity. The first and last ten minutes of each class period are important to the success of our students academics. Slider Middle School has initiated over the past few years the 10 by 10 rule and will continue enforcing this strategy with our students to help them with their academics.

Safety is a top priority at Slider. Please make sure to ONLY use the left lane to pass slowly and the right lane for picking up or dropping off our scholars. We want to keep our scholars and school community safe.
