You may have noticed new signage in front of the LHS Annex Building, now home to our district's Family Resource Center, also known as "The HUB." Mikaela Zimmerman, Special Projects Coordinator, is overseeing WPUSD's Community Schools Grant, which funds the operation of this vital resource center for students, staff, families, and the community. The HUB will serve as a one-stop shop for resources, supplies, and much more!
Stay tuned as we work to build awareness of The HUB and establish a stronger online presence in the near future!

LOCAL ARTICLE WITH PLACER COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION AND PLACER SHERRIFF
Guest editorial: Social media threats to schools are always serious business – and we're taking action
"In recent weeks, our schools have seen a troubling rise in social media threats. These threats – sadly, often posted by students – may seem like a joke or a way to gain attention, but make no mistake: They are taken seriously and will have real consequences.
As leaders in Placer County, we want to be clear: Any person, student or otherwise who makes a threat against a school, whether they intend to follow through or not, will be arrested and may be placed in the juvenile or adult detention facility. These are not empty words. When a threat is made, law enforcement, school administrators and safety officers mobilize immediately to ensure the safety of our students and staff. It’s disruptive, costly and alarming for our entire community." . . . READ MORE
LINCOLN PUBLIC LIBRARY WANTS TO HEAR FROM YOU!
The Library has received funding from the California State Library to offer paid internships for teens in 2025. The overall goal of this internship program is to allow students to explore career options in library, develop transferable work skills, and build social and emotional tools for the workplace. To design a responsive program that meets the needs of our students, they are seeking community input.
They compiled a brief survey to get feedback from youth, educators, employers, parents, and community members. It is available in both English and Spanish. The survey is linked below.
WPUSD'S PORTRAIT OF A LEARNER🎓
What is a Portrait of a Learner?
Imagine a world where every child develops the essential skills they need to become successful adults. With your help, we've identified these very skills, and we are excited to share them with you today. You may have already noticed these traits around campus, or perhaps your child has already mentioned them to you!
As we bring our entire community together to help our young learners grow into successful adults, we would love your support in embracing this initiative. Share the graphic and video linked below with family, co-workers, sports coaches, and more! Our vision is for WPUSD's Portrait of a Learner to become common knowledge beyond the classroom. As this initiative progresses, students will learn and demonstrate these traits, leaving Western Placer schools with a tangible portfolio they can use when applying to colleges, interviewing for jobs, and incorporating into their daily lives.
We are just scratching the surface of our Portrait of a Learner rollout, and we hope you will help us build awareness! You can find more information on our website HERE.
HOW MUCH SCREEN TIME IS TOO MUCH? 🤳
Ask the School Psychologist!
This question does not have a simple answer. There are many ways we could define “screen time”. For the purpose of this monthly newsletter, we will discuss various electronic devices that could fall
within the definition of a screen. This can include television, tablets, iPad, cell phones, and video
games. In our monthly newsletter, we will provide research, tips, and recommendations for helping
students use screens responsibly.
PLATEFUL NEWS! 🍈
Plateful Receives Major Award from the USDA!
We are excited to share that our Plateful Team has been awarded the USDA’s Healthy Meals Incentives Award for Innovation in the Preparation of School Meals! This award celebrates our efforts to enhance the quality of our meals by introducing fresh, scratch-prepared menu options using local agricultural products and USDA standardized recipes. Our focus on student engagement in the menu creation process has been key to this success.
In addition to this honor, they are also receiving national recognition and an opportunity to attend the Healthy Meals Summit to share our innovative practices with other districts. This achievement underscores our commitment to providing nutritious, delicious meals that support the health and well-being of our students.
Learn more about the Healthy Meals Incentives at www.healthymealsincentives.org.
October Harvest of the Month: Finger Limes
Finger limes are back this October in salad bars across the district. We will also be hosting taste tests at various sites!
New Menus Starting Mid October
The seasons are changing and so are the menus. You will see new breakfast items like breakfast sandwiches (all schools) & croissant French toast bake (primary)! You will also see new items on the secondary lunch including build your own pasta, build your own burrito bowls and breakfast for lunch (croissant French toast & sausage)! Check out our menus online to see what the new menus look like starting 10/21.
Taste Test Success!
In September, students at TBHS tested out lasagna as a potential new menu item. October is Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, and we will hold taste tests for this recipe at LHS!
WPUSD MEDIA INTERN CREATES PROMO VIDEO🎥
Last year marked the successful launch of WPUSD's first-ever Media Internship program, and we couldn’t be prouder of the results! Two talented students from Twelve Bridges High School (TBHS), Luke Medeiros and Kyra Meigs, were selected after an application and interview process to work under the guidance of our Communications Officer. They took on a variety of hands-on projects, visiting our campuses to capture photos and videos for future promotional use.
One of their main projects was the production of a GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) program promotional video. This video, led by TBHS graduate Luke Medeiros and supported by current senior Kyra Meigs, highlights the incredible opportunities at our First Street campus. We’re thrilled to share this video with you today! Be on the lookout for it on our social media platforms soon.

School Facilities Project Updates 👏👏
Twelve Bridges High School Athletic Fields and Concessions
Exciting progress is being made! Excavation for irrigation lines and valves is moving quickly. The backstop and fencing for the baseball and softball fields are coming along, along with trench drains and mow strips. Flatwork prep for the JV softball and baseball fields is also underway. Roof work on the concession and restroom buildings is complete, and interior plumbing, electrical, and mechanical installations have begun. Window installations are in progress too.
Phoenix High School Classroom Building
Big steps forward here as well! The anchor bolts and rebar for the building footings and elevator pit are complete. Due to the heat, the concrete was poured very early this morning - 1:00 AM to 8:00 AM.
First Student Senate meeting in the books ✅
Students dove into our Portrait of a Learner and discussed our Youth Truth survey data that students, staff and families took in the spring of last year. Students will use this data to help drive positive change on their school campuses. We are so excited to see what they will come up with!
Our Student Senate is a unique team of student leaders from each school, representing grades 4-12.
