PRINCIPAL CORNER
Dear OSES Families,
This upcoming week is our First Annual Boosterthon. This fund raiser is unique in that it allows you to reach out to friends and family across the globe. Students create a fundraising page and can share the page with friends and family, who can then share with other friends and family, and so on.
The first step is to register your student on Booster https://mybooster.com
There is no fee or required donation to register. We realize that not every family may be able to donate at this time, however your student can create a donation page and send it to others who might be able to.
Any student who registers by this Sunday, January 28th, can dress down on Monday, January 29th.
Over the next week you will get sent several reminders. Please bear with us, this will be the only time during the school year we push the event.
At the school level, the Boosterthon team will be here to provide energy to the program and distribute prizes.
Monday, February 5th is the final day of the event and we will have a fun run!

Curriculum and Testing Updates
This week our students enjoyed participating in Florida’s Celebrate Literacy Week: Believe in Your-Shelf!
Coming up next month is the schoolwide Drop Everything and Write activity (DEAW).
Tejas Byna tied for 1st place in this week’s county semi-final Spelling Bee and will be moving on to represent OCPS (and Orlando Science) at the regional Spelling Bee at Disney's Contemporary Resort in March. Congratulations Tejas, we are so proud of you!

Noetic Math
Noetic Math is a biannual mathematics competition for elementary and middle school students.
Students who receive an honorable mention scored in the top 50% for their grade level in the competition. Students who received National Honor Roll scored in the top 10% for their grade level. The team winner had the highest score on their specific team.

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
In Kindergarten this week students have been working hard! This Thursday was the 100th day of school! Students dressed up as if they were 100 years old and completed some fun 100 themed activities.
In Ms. Volden's class, we had fun this week for Literacy week by having a story read to the class by Ms. Bermudez and making fun STEM houses for The Three Little Pigs. In science we have also begun our plans for our class STEM project, Growing Gummy Bears. In math this week we have finished our topic 9 lessons for comparing numbers to 100 and ordering numbers from least to greatest, or greatest to least.
FIRST
What an exciting week it has been in First Grade for Literacy Week! The classes competed in the AR reading marathon, and Ms. DiNuzzo's class came in first with 157 tests passed, with Mrs. Vancol's class a close second with 128 tests passed. Mystery readers made special guest appearances, including Ms. Greene and Ms. Nicole! The kids were so excited to have visitors! Ms. DiNuzzo's class had a book tasting, in which they got to select a genre and write a recommendation about it. All of the classes completed STEM challenges related to stories such as building a tower and escape for Rapunzel, building a parachute for Jack (Jack in the Beanstalk), and building a flying machine like Rosie Revere, Engineer. For the 100th day, students completed 100 exercise challenges, including squats, sit-ups, and jumping jacks. First grade ended the week with a 101 day of school celebration and parade, including (of course) a read-aloud of 101 Dalmatians! It's been quite the woof-tastic week!

Sanico
My second-grade students are excited about the challenge that I gave them. I challenge them to master the table of multiplication up to 10 times table. Every morning meeting, we are working on our daily editing mats where their writing and spelling skills will develop and enhance, they are correcting the misspelled words, uses of commas, punctuation marks, period and exclamation point. After a successful editing they will come to my teachers table and show off their mastery of the times table that they already know. When they are done and perfectly mastered, they will get the new times table that they are going to master. Students who will be successful in our challenge will receive a certificate and will be recognized in our class.
THIRD
This week, our class delved into exciting lessons! In math, we dived into the world of adding and subtracting mixed fractions. For reading and writing, we honed our skills in informative writing and explored enlightening informative texts. Social studies led us to discover diverse regions, with a special focus on the vibrant North East. Meanwhile, in science, our exploration of various forms of energy continued. It's been a lively and educational week filled with both learning and fun!
FOURTH
Polejes
This week in Ms. Polejes’ class, we made a Universe in a Box! In science, we are currently learning about the Earth, Moon, Sun, and Stars. Through our model, we can see how the Earth’s revolution around the Sun shows us the different star patterns in our galaxy.
This week is also Celebrate Literacy Week! Ms. Parlewicz and Mrs. Baker’s classes decorated their doors!
FIFTH
5th grade students had a great learning experience at the Marine Science Center; where they enjoyed, discovered, and appreciated the many wonders of the world of marine science. Students had a guided tour, learned about Florida's Ecosystems, and the MSC rehabilitation efforts. They also learned about reptiles, met the raptors, walked through the bird sanctuary, and learned fascinating facts about birds of prey. Finally, students explored the estuary and practiced the ancient art of seine netting to collect and study the inhabitants of Florida's Ecosystem.
SPECIALS
In the STEM Lab this week we had fun exploring the experimental process (commonly called the scientific method)
K and Frist graders used their 5 senses to explore the world around them, including popcorn! Second grade dove deeper into observations and inferences. Third graders completed a fun experiment with Skittles. Some Fourth and Fifth grade classes go to see how many drops will fit on a penny.
SIXTH
Dilek- Turkish
Hello, Students in Turkish class this week are working on their conversation skills about basic introductions, saying their names, asking names and basic questions and answers. They are also working on their comic posters which we are excited to share on next volume 😊
I hope your 2024 is off to a fantastic start! As January comes to a close, it is important to remember that self-awareness should be ongoing.
I love this strategy that I found that reminds us to be self aware before reacting to a situation.
Try this:
Stopping or pausing before responding or reacting.
Taking a deep breath and becoming aware of their breathing.
Observe what is happening inside their bodies and what is happening around them.
Proceed mindfully based on the information they learned from checking in with themselves and taking a moment to observe the situation.
This is a great way to open communication with your child!

PICK UP: Please remember that you should not arrive on campus before clubs dismiss. Even coming 5 minutes early causes backups in our dismissal process.
- Building 1 (grades K-3) - clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
- Building 2 (grades 4-6)- clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
ABSENCES: Remember that 3 or more consecutive absences will result in a removal from the club. If you are missing club because of tutoring or sickness, email the club teacher so it can be excused.

Brainfuse offers free online tutoring through the Orange County Library System to ALL students in Orange County Public Schools.
FREE live tutors are available every day from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Using Brainfuse, students can connect with a qualified tutor for expert help in a variety of subjects.
