A Note from Dr. Martin
Hello LISD Families,
I hope you are having a wonderful week.
We are in the i-Ready testing window right now, for both elementary and secondary. The i-Ready is a common interim assessment in math and English language arts (ELA), which means that we give it a couple times a year to help us understand our students' mastery of knowledge and skills in math and ELA. It's important to note that the i-Ready test is a snapshot of achievement. It gives us some important information, but doesn't tell the complete story. In determining a student's level of mastery and progress, we look at i-Ready scores, SBAC scores (a state test given only in the spring), and the assignments and assessments completed by students in their classes.
The i-Ready is called a common interim assessment because it doesn't just happen once a year. We can use the information we gather to make adjustments to our curriculum and instruction, for individuals and groups. Your child's performance on the i-Ready assessment doesn't determine whether they will pass a class, but it does give teachers some helpful and specific information about strengths and areas for improvement, and it helps us set schoolwide student achievement goals.
Thanks to our wonderful district Assessment Coordinator, Kathy Booth, for working with the LISD staff to organize the process for common assessments. If you have questions about i-Ready, please contact Kathy or me.
I hope you and your family have a wonderful three-day weekend!
All my best,
Martha

Why These Forms are VERY IMPORTANT
To all families: PLEASE SUBMIT school lunch forms if you have not done so this year. Even if you don't qualify for free and reduced lunch, these forms help the school get additional funding for scholarships and other federal funds. The more accurate data we have about our school community, the better chances we have to get more funding.
All forms in English and Spanish can be found on our website.
Everything on the form is strictly confidential. Any questions please contact Laurie Jardine at ljardine@lopezislandschool.org
Personal Finance Update from Ms. Deach
The 7th graders have made some great progress in their Personal Finance class. Over the past few weeks, they have been learning about simple interest and compound interest. Whether it was calculating interest on savings accounts or exploring the effects of compound interest over time, they showed great enthusiasm and focus. We will keep exploring this topic in October. I am proud of their hard work and look forward to continuing this journey as we explore more financial topics. Thank you for your ongoing support!
Vision & Hearing Screenings for Grades K, 1, 2, 3, 5, & 7

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Katrina Lovejoy, Health Room Aide, 360-468-2202 x 2114
Middle School Commons Is the Place to Be!
Over the summer a team of volunteers from LISD staff and the LIPTSA worked together to give the Greg Ewert Commons a facelift with fresh paint in Lopez school colors and some banners. Recently the Sausman and Kinney families donated a ping pong and foosball table to the middle school commons. A HUGE THANK YOU to those families. Our space is gradually feeling more and more inviting and inclusive thanks to these changes - and stay tuned. More great changes coming!
Elementary Bike Trip to Shaw Island
On September 13th the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth graders took the ferry with bicycles to Shaw Island! Along with teachers and parent volunteers the students biked to visit the Ellis Homestead. The students experienced what homesteaders went through to build a house and live on the land in the 1800s as part of the Homestead Act (all done with no modern equipment or tools). They were super interested with great questions and many stated that it was "cool" and the highlight of the field trip. A game of baseball at the Shaw ball field and beach exploration were also fun for students. Thanks to the San Juan Preservation Trust for facilitating this visit and accommodating all our students and bicycles along with the ferry schedule. Thanks as well to all the parents who helped make it happen.
Early Childhood Development Screening - FREE
Wednesday, October 2 - By Appointment
Child Find is a program run by the Lopez Island School District to identify any factors that may interfere with your child's learning, growth or development. The program is for children ages 0 - 5 years old. The screening is intended to be a first step towards getting your child the help they need to thrive in school. It is also meant to help parents identify their child's strengths and opportunities for growth, and to offer approaches to use at home. Contact Mary Fordham, mfordham@lopezislandschool.org, to schedule.
Interested in Learning More about IEPs?
Lopez ALIGN and the LIFRC are hosting a IEP Informational Conversation in the LISD Library on October 8 from 4 - 6 pm. Light snacks provided.

Knife Sharpening Services are Back!
School chef John Shaw is offering knife sharpening service again on Fridays. This service is a fundraiser for the school's LIFE (Lopez Island Farm Education) program. The cost is $10 per person +$2/in per knife. So if you bring in three knives that are 6in long it would be $46 total.
Sharpening happens on Fridays, ideally you would drop them off in the morning and then John will have them done before 3pm. Email jshaw@lopezislandschool.org to book a slot.
