A Message from the Superintendent
Dear Members of the AUSD Community,
I hope this week's greeting find everyone healthy and well and safely celebrating Valentine's Day today. I also hope the annual President's Week break provided a chance to turn off the computer, relax, and enjoy family time last week. Presidents' Day is observed tomorrow, Monday, February 15. Students resume classes on Tuesday, February 16. Safely enjoy the holiday.
This coming Friday, February 19, the current progress reporting period for all grades ends. Progress reports will become available for parents to view on the portal starting March 5. Visit the Aeries Parent or Student Portal here to check your student's progress.
Below are key upcoming dates. Find the entire 2020-21 calendar here.
Next Progress Reporting Period 2/22/21 - 4/9/21
State Testing Window 03/01/21 - 05/28/21
Spring Break is 03/29/21 - 04/02/21. No classes.
Last Quarter Reporting Period 4/12/21 - 5/28/21
Last Day of School is May 28
Among the dates above is the window for State testing. At this time testing is still expected to be administered, although it will be modified given the challenges of testing remotely. I will have more details on testing in two weeks after the State Board of Education determines exactly what will be expected at their February 24, 2021 meeting.
The 2021-22 school calendar will be released on March 5, 2021. I will include it in the March 7 Round-Up. I know many families are looking ahead to plan vacations with cautious optimism as we resume normal life again, soon.
There's reasons to be optimistic. Riverside's COVID-19 rates continue to move in the right direction! We are steadily approaching the target rates to transition from the Purple Tier to the Red Tier and be eligible to reopen. The target rates consist of a positivity rate of less than 8.0% (currently 14.4%), an adjusted case rate of less than 7.0 cases per 100,000 (currently 44.9), and a health equity metric of less than 8.0% (currently 16.4%). ICU bed availability remains at zero, however.
Individual sports competitions will also continue in light of the positive trend. We will also reopen in-person instruction and support services for some of our students with special needs starting on February 22. We are gradually working our way back into normal school operations. Let's keep lowering the numbers by COVID-testing and following safety measures to avoid a repeat of the last few months. County health officials are also cautiously optimistic while they continue to stress vigilance as one of the new variants of COVID, believed to be 50% more transmissible than the conventional variety, is predicted to be the dominant coronavirus nationwide by the end of March. There are 153 cases of the new variant in California as of today.
We will get there. Be vigilant. Stay strong. Stay together.
Have you completed your summer school survey yet? Please do if you think you may attend. We encourage attendance. We are planning to provide our summer programs in-person, but in the event that's still not possible, we will provide our programs virtually. Let us know if you plan to attend. Completing the survey allows us to plan ahead. Completing the survey does not obligate families to attend. But we hope you do. Summer instruction will focus on recovering learning loss and getting ahead.
On behalf of the Board of Education, enjoy the three-day holiday weekend and thank you for being great partners. Let's look forward to brighter days ahead when this is all behind us. In the meantime, stay strong, stay healthy, and be well.
Sincerely,
Allan Mucerino
