SPARTAN SHIELD
WELCOME BACK!
iReady Testing This Week!
iReady ELA and Math testing will be taking place over the next two weeks.
On Monday, August 26, students will begin the iReady diagnostic assessment. ELA iReady testing will be on August, 26, 27, 28, and 30, while Math iReady testing will take place on September 3, 4, and 6.
In order for students to carefully complete the iReady diagnostic, we have created a testing block during the school day. All testing will take place during a special testing block in the morning. Students will stay with their 1st-period teacher for testing. Please see the bell schedule below and avoid scheduling appointments or picking students up from school during the testing block. Notice also that the school day still ends at 2:38 P.M.
The iReady diagnostic is a very useful tool for teachers and students. First, the diagnostic provides critical information to teachers about what skills students have learned or have yet to learn this school year. Teachers then determine what skills need to be addressed in the second part of this year to ensure that students are best prepared for next year. iReady also takes students' current skill levels and then provides targeted lessons to students, so if students take the diagnostic seriously, they will have a bank of lessons available to them in iReady to help them progress further.
Here are some ways that you can help your student do their best on this assessment:
1. talk to them about giving their best effort
2. encourage them to get a good night's sleep before the test (especially limiting electronic use before bed)
3. help them get to school in time to eat breakfast (the MP Room opens at 7:30 A.M. each day for breakfast)
4. minimizing absences and early releases/late drop-offs on these testing days
Thank you for supporting your student and our teachers during iReady testing!

Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee (SPAC)
Looking to be a part of San Juan's decision-making process and to represent the Arcade community? Arcade needs a parent or family representative on Superintendent Bassanelli's Parent Advisory Committee (SPAC), which is dedicated to improving student learning.
The purpose of SPAC is to give parents an avenue for two-way communication with central office staff, as well as an opportunity to meet and discuss district-wide issues with the superintendent. It also gives the district an opportunity to provide parents with information and allows them to offer their input. Most important, SPAC is committed to excellence in education and is interested in and supportive of all students in the San Juan Unified School District.
The only requirement to join the Superintendent's Parent Advisory Committee is that you have a student currently enrolled at Arcade.
2024-2025 Meeting Dates:
September 26, 2024
January 23, 2025
May 1, 2025
All meetings will be held from 3:00-5:00 p.m. in the district office board room (located at 3738 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael CA 95608).
Childcare is available for children ages 4 through 17 (toddlers who are no longer in diapers are also welcome).
If you are interested in being Arcade's SPAC representative, please email Principal McManigal at Lindsey.mcmanigal@sanjuan.edu

We are so excited that our school’s full-campus modernization is approaching completion! To celebrate our new campus, we will be hosting a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Thursday, September 19th at 5:00 P.M. in our outdoor amphitheater right before our Back-to-School Night. Please notice that our Back-to-School Night times have changed: the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony is at 5:00, and Back-to-School Night starts at 5:30 P.M.
The Ribbon Cutting will feature student and staff speakers and a band performance. Afterwards, at 5:30 P.M., Back-to-School Night officially begins, and families will be able to walk about campus on self-guided tours of campus and meet their student's teachers.
We hope to see you there!
Arcade's Construction Update
For the latest updates on the construction at Arcade, click the red button below to be directed to a special newsletter!
POSITIVE BEHAVIOR INTERVENTIONS AND SUPPORTS (PBIS)
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
Arcade follows the Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) framework, which creates an environment that allows all students to thrive. As part of that framework, teachers acknowledge students who are exhibiting Spartan Strong behaviors, being kind, safe, and responsible, by giving them a Spartan Strong ticket.
A raffle is held every week using these tickets, and Spartan Strong winners are announced on Fridays. The lucky winners then pick out a prize in the office. You can watch the announcement of the winners in the video, as well as one of our PBIS videos where we teach our school-wide expectations below!
BRIDGES AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAM IS NOW ENROLLING!
Our Bridges After-School Program is enrolling students! If you'd like to have your child sign up for Bridges, you can pick up the application in the Arcade front office or download and print it below.
Please get in touch with Dulce Garcia, Site Facilitator, at (916) 707-3283 if you have any questions.
Thank you!
PICK-UP & DROP-OFF LOOP
Please Review Our Pick-up and Drop-off Loop
For the first several days of school, construction will be helping families navigate our new car/bus loop. Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation as the construction crews continue to finish our beautiful new campus!
We are updating our processes nearly every day, so that we can make adjustments to speed up pick-up. Please pay careful attention in the loop, follow the instructions of staff and construction, and DO NOT EXIT YOUR CARS WHEN IN THE LOOP.
Please notice the updated loop map above--we did change the location of bus pick-up and drop-off on the first day of school, so that is was safer for students (the map shows this change).
Please continue to allow for extra time for pick-up and drop-off for the first several days as we navigate these changes together.
Please continue to pull forward, leaving minimal space between cars, so that the line moves as quickly as possible.
Please review the map with your child, especially if they are walking or riding their bikes to school, so that they are aware of the crosswalks and where to enter campus safely.
Thank you so much for helping our students get to school and enter campus safely! We greatly appreciate your patience.
SCHEDULE CHANGE POLICY
Please Carefully Review Our Schedule Change Policy
This week students will be able to request a schedule change. Starting on Monday, August 19th, students may come to the office before or after school to get a Schedule Change Request Form (the form is also linked below--click on the red button to open the document).
Schedule changes will only be considered for the following reasons:
A student would like to move from a grade-level class to an Honors class or vice versa
A student would like to change their elective class
Schedule changes will not be considered for the following reasons:
A student wants to change teachers
A student wants to switch lunch periods
All schedule change request forms must be submitted by the end of the school day on Wednesday, August 28th. Schedule change requests will only be considered if the form is signed by a parent/family member.
After we have received all of the schedule change requests, we will examine them carefully to see how many we can accommodate given current class sizes. We will communicate all schedule changes to families and students; please have your student continue their current schedule until notified by the office.
If you have any questions regarding schedule changes, please contact Vice Principal Philip Tateishi at philip.tateishi@sanjuan.edu.
