April 2025
Principal's Message
Hello Cougar Families!
We only have two full months of school remaining in the 24-25 academic year and the long stretch of prepping for our MCAP exams has almost passed. This is a reminder that our MCAP assessments are extremely important for our students and it is vital that they come with a fully charged device and a fully charged and prepared to do their best version of themselves on testing days. We are shrinking our primary testing dates to do the entire school at one time in ELA & Math. Please make sure your child is present, on time, and ready on those days.
We have also begun our GT discussions with parents and families are being reached out to regarding their child's potential GT placement. We used every available data point for all of our students from 5th grade through the present day and will be looking at their MCAP scores in August as well. The reason for this is to make sure that students are appropriately placed so they can receive appropriate support in their classes and grow. This does not mean they cannot go back to GT if their skills improve and their data suggests they are achieving at that level, but it means that our recommendation as a school is that they are currently not performing at the level that would be considered GT. While student grades are certainly used, it is important to remember that we do offer unlimited re-do's on many day-to-day assignments for students as we consistently re-assess them on standards, so students may be getting good grades, but it could mean they still would perform better at a slower pace with more skill-building. This process is to make absolutely sure we are helping all of our students perform at the best possible level for them and to make sure we are giving all of our students what they need to thrive. Please take these recommendations with that thought in mind.
The month of April is very short, but it sets up for a very busy May which includes all of our Spring Concerts, our annual Art Show, and the start of our End of Year events such as grade-level Field Days and 8th Grade Week in June. Before you know it, we will be saying goodbye for the summer - or for our 8th graders to begin their next chapter. We thank you very much for all of your time and support of our CMS team and your student.
Warmest Regards,
Mr. Carney
Cougar Pounces (Things to Know In March)
- IT IS YOUR CHILD'S RESPONSIBILITY TO HAVE ALL SCHOOL SUPPLIES AND THEIR FULLY CHARGED DEVICE WITH THEM EVERY DAY. Failure to fully charge his or her device in the evening or failure to come without materials will result in a drop in academic performance.
- CALENDAR ADJUSTMENTS IN APRIL:
- Friday, April 4th: End of 3rd Quarter - 3 Hour Early Dismissal
- Friday, April 11th: SPRING BREAK BEGINS AT END OF SCHOOL DAY (2:45 PM)
- April 12th - April 21st: SPRING BREAK
- April 22nd: Schools Re-open
- GT CHANGES: Families should be receiving phone calls regarding potentially moving your student to or from GT classes to better suit their academic needs. We have used 12 data points from their 5th grade year through their time at CMS thus far to examine what would be considered the GT level and where our students stand in relation to that level. This is a very rigorous process that was used to really calibrate where students should be placed based on their performance. If you have questions you can certainly reach out and we can discuss.
- MCAP TESTING: It is very important that all of our students get a good night's sleep and fully charge their devices when MCAP testing begins after Spring Break. Please remember that even though we are having initial GT conversations, MCAP performance will impact decisions when we receive that data in August so students should do their very best so it does not impact them negatively in the Fall. These are NOT days for your child to have appointments or otherwise be absent. Please make sure your child is well rested, brings a fully charged device, and a positive attitude to all testing dates. We have revised our testing schedule:
- MCAP ELA: Tuesday, April 29th - Friday, May 2nd
- MCAP Social Studies 8: Monday, May 5th - Tuesday, May 6th
- MCAP Math: Monday, May 19th - Tuesday, May20th
- MCAP Make-up Dates: Will be between testing dates and the week afterwards.
- 6TH GRADE ZOO TRIP: All permission forms and money were due in February and now next week our 6th graders will make their annual trip to the zoo on Thursday, April 10th!
- WALKERS: If your child walks, please be aware that as the weather gets nicer our walkers like to try to linger around campus longer. This is not ok as they should be exiting the building and going immediately home. We will be escorting our walkers off campus who continue to loiter. We also ask you to remember that if your child walks home through the neighborhood they should be respectful of our neighbors and their property. They should not be walking through people's lawns and otherwise loitering on other people's property. They represented us at CMS and we want to make sure they are representing us well.
Resources for Monitoring and Controlling Your Child's Phone Time
Phone, Lateness, and Tech Violation Notification
Here is our Cell Phone, Lateness, and Technology violation protocol. You will receive a message via Talking Points each time your child has a violation this year. Thank you in advance for having your child prepared to comply with our expectations concerning being on time to class, keeping cell phones off and away, and remaining on task when on BCPS devices.
- 1st Violation: You will receive a text from Talking Points telling you your child has received a violation and that it is a warning.
- 2nd Violation: You will receive a text from Talking Points telling you your child has received a second violation and that it is a warning, but the next will be a lunch detention.
- 3rd Violation: You will be called and told your child has been assigned a lunch detention for frequent lateness, tech, or cell phone violations.
- 4th Violation: A REQUIRED parent conference with an administrator to discuss our expectations. At this time your child will be asked to lock their phone up for the day for the remainder of the quarter if they bring it to school. The next violation will result in removal from any incentive or activity that quarter.
- 5th Violation: Loss of Grade Level Incentive (i.e. Field Day, assembly, basketball game, etc.)
- 6th Violation: You will be called and told your child has been assigned a 1 hour after school detention with an administrator. This is not optional.
- 7th Violation: You will be called and your child will be assigned to our Alternative Learning Center for the day.
We have created a live year-long calendar that families can view to see all things at CMS. We will continue to update as the year goes on. Some dates near the end of the year are tentative, but we will move them around as needed depending on how the school calendar evolves with weather days.

Grade Level Team Information
6th Grade Team
Hello CMS 6th Grade Parents,
Thank you for supporting and assisting us in implementing our cell phone policy. We ask that cell phones are powered down and placed away before going into classrooms. All students have access to the technology they need for instructional purposes with their school laptop. If you have an urgent message for your child, please call the school office at (443) 809-7626. Students will be able to utilize the main office phone if they need to make a phone call.
Attendance and timeliness are crucial to academic success. Our 6th grade attendance is excellent and is one of the top marks in the county. Still, we can improve this and need to work together to maintain our great attendance rate.
Lastly, I want to encourage our parents to ensure that your child is reading at home each night. Middle school students should aim to read one enjoyable book on their reading level per month. Check out the Cockeysville Library for great selections or search Amazon for a childhood favorite of your own and share it with your child!
As the third quarter comes to a close, we are reminded that our sixth graders are growing older and being expected to take on more responsibility. They understand our expectations and routines are very much set in place. As you can imagine, student achievement is higher for those students who have the supplies they need. The same can be said for students who get enough rest at night and come to school on time on a regular basis. Here are some important dates for you: Thanks for your continued support in these areas. Educating students is truly a team sport!
Lastly, the zoo trip is happening on April 10th for all students that signed up and met the requirements. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Drought @ mdrought@bcps.org. Our 4th quarter incentive will be our Field Day that occurs the first week of June.
7th Grade Team
Hello 7th grade families and happy spring! It is hard to believe that we are in the 4th quarter and that your students are almost 8th graders. Our lateness/phone/technology violations reset with the beginning of the quarter. Spring Break is April 14 to April 21. The last week of April we begin MCAP testing and it will last through May 20. Because of the testing schedule it is very important that students arrive on time to school every day. They must have a charged device as the MCAP test is online. I hope your family gets to do something over break that makes them happy. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out.
8th Grade Team
Dear Parents and Guardians,
Our 8th graders visited the Natural History and American History museums in Washington D.C on April 2. It was a great day full of exploration, experiences, and fun. Thank you to all the parent chaperones. We could not have a trip like this without your help.
Students have been asked to create a slide about themselves for the 8th grade slideshow on June 12th. The directions and link to upload their slide can be found n their ELA and Science Schoology pages.
Students recently received a copy of the 8th grade end of year events. Our Celebration Week begins June 9th with signing the sidewalk outside the lower lobby. This has become a fun tradition at CMS. We end the week on Friday June 13th with our annual Promotion Parade from 8:30-10:30. Please read the attached document for a list of all our Celebration Week events as well as the parade map.
Please continue to check Schoology, replenish school supplies, and encourage your child to continue to work until the end of the school year. As we begin the 4th marking period and the weather begins to get nice, it is easy to become distracted. Our 8th grade team continues to hold our students to high expectations for their academic performance as well as their behavior. We thank you in advance for all your support.
From the Nurse
As we enter allergy season, please be mindful that these symptoms can often mimic colds and or flu.
If your child wakes up with runny/stuffy nose and sore throat, please check their temperature before giving medication and sending them to school.
A temperature of 100.0 or higher would indicate your child is sick and unable to come to school. The student needs to be fever free (without medication) for 24 hours prior to returning to school.
We are still in the throws of cold and flu season and are sending students home throughout the day with fever.
Thank you for your help as we work together to keep Cockeysville Middle healthy.

(The next food distribution is April 10th. April’s delivery has already occurred.)
- CMS COPY ROOM: Volunteer on your own time! Work in the copy room, assisting with copies, laminating, etc. for teachers. Sign up for a day and then come whatever time works for you! Training will be provided. Email whitneysyork@gmail.com for more information and to schedule training. Sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D45AEA72BA5FB6-51004575-cmscopy#/
ANNUAL BCPS VOLUNTEER TRAINING:
Volunteers are greatly appreciated at CMS. The BCPS annual online volunteer training and application should be completed prior to volunteering at CMS (chaperoning field trips, Copy Room, Food Pantry, etc.). Please bring your training certificate and completed application to the CMS office when you arrive the first time to volunteer or email them to Ms. Wortman in the CMS office at nwortman@bcps.org. The online training takes less than 20 minutes. Thank you! BCPS Volunteer Training & Application: https://www.bcps.org/cos/communications/FACE/b_c_p_s_volunteers
Please note: Even BCPS employees need to complete this training if they are volunteering in a school other than their workplace.
Also: Save a copy of your BCPS Volunteer Training certificate for CYC volunteering.
