Multicultural Calendar
October stands for Global Diversity Awareness Month which hopes to promote respect for all cultures. By taking time to learn about those around you, there becomes a better sense of understanding and acceptance.
We also honor National Disability Employment Awareness Month this month. This awareness month advocates for those with disabilities and for inclusion in the workforce.
Prevention is key and that’s what Breast Cancer Awareness Month hopes everyone knows. As one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women, regular breast screenings are the first step toward not only prevention but early treatment of the disease.
October 1 – 4 – Rosh Hashanah*
The Jewish New Year is a time of both reflection and repentance. It begins the High Holy Days, which will end with Yom Kippur.
October 10 – World Mental Health Day
This important day advocates for mental health awareness and education. Mental Illness Awareness Week is celebrated the first week of the month too.
October 14 – Defender of Ukraine Day
Celebrate those who have fought or are still fighting for the freedom of Ukraine today.
October 14 – Indigenous People’s Day
This day coincides with Columbus Day and honors the indigenous people living in the United States and the violence they have suffered in history.
October 19 – International Pronouns Day
Being referred to as the wrong pronoun is a common discrimination that transgender or nonconforming people face. We can transform society by not only understanding different gender identity pronouns, but identity terms too.

Middle School Cross Country this fall has gone off with a bang (or sometimes a bell)!
The runners have competed across miles of trails, including mud pits at both the Ultimook and Seaside, where, fortunately, no shoes were lost. Athletes are in competition with others from across Oregon, Washington, and even as far as California and Idaho. But they are also in competition with themselves, as each runner strives each meet to beat their ever-decreasing PR (Personal Record) times. October will see the team competing in the 4th Annual Rose City Championship Invitational and the much-loved Halloween Dash Bash. Great job, cross country–Run Like the East Wind!
High School Corbett Cross Country is off to a great start.
With four races down and five to go we're nearing the halfway mark and we’ve already met with a lot of success.
We’re led this year by our captains, Flynn Parrish and Thatcher Peterson. They and our other seniors (Natalie Matias, Bryce Plummer, Caiden McHenry, Logan Auble and Matthew Caulfield) have set a great example for our younger athletes.
Each week one athlete passes our Corbett Baton to a teammate who puts into practice our values of Passion, Purpose and Perseverance. So far this year, Zevi, Enrique, Vivienne and Claire have been recognized by their peers.
Some of the highlights of this season include:
Or team has already set 49 Personal or Season Records highlighted by Natalie (3), Caiden (3), Jack (3), Logan M (3), Vivienne (4), Zevi (3), Asher (3), Emma (3), Elaia (3), and Holden (3).
Ultimook was, of course, noteworthy with its mud pit and 2 river crossings.
Vivienne won the women’s varsity Rainier XC Invitational with Claire coming in 2nd. Zevi placed 3rd in that same meet and Jack won the JV race.
Our men’s varsity team won the small school division of the Rainier XC Invitational.
Our women’s varsity team placed 3rd at the Catlin Gabel XC Invitational, beating some 4A and 5A schools.
We’re excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds.

We’re going on a bear hike, we’re gonna catch a big one!
Fortunately no bears were found on the CAPS 6-8 overnight trip to Gifford Pinchot National Forest. But many other exciting things were encountered–including a pack of wild turkeys!
On the first day of the trip, students sketched Mt. St. Helens from the McCellan Viewpoint, trekked to the back end of Ape Caves, and explored the lava tubes at Trail of Two Forests, before pitching their tents to camp out for the night. The next morning they got an early start with a hike up Eagle Cliff, where they saw a lumber crew in action felling trees, and learned about trail signs and animal tracking. After packing up their gear, they loaded to bus to head to Cedar Flats Research trail for Nature Journaling (a 1-mile trail loop with old growth trees, lightning-struck trees, and views of the Muddy River), before ending up back at the Lewis River for a geology-based rock hunt. Fact fact: dry pumice stones float!
Trips like these are an important chance for students to experience classroom concepts in “real life”, see how they fit into the nature around them, and build relationships as a school community. We’re so grateful for the opportunity to have such a fun and impactful adventure!
Still More Plastic Bottle Caps Needed!
The plastic cap mural has finally begun at Corbett Middle School! It’s looking great and the art class is having a really good time working on it. We’ve sorted, sized and drilled pilot holes in many of the caps, and we’ve been adding them to the painted mural one by one. Check out the progress so far!
We still need more caps, since we’re planning to do a second mural in the spring when we switch rosters for art classes. So, please rinse, dry and donate plastic caps of all sizes to the middle school office at the new Woodard campus, or send them with your students to bring to Mr. Houck. Thanks!

Angela Davis-District Athletic Director
By Michelle Carter Smith
*Supervises Corbett Middle and High School athletic coaching staff
*Manages eligibility, registration, and attendance of all students
*Schedules all sporting events
*Plans/supervises all home sporting events
After being born in Tacoma, WA Angela was adopted when she was two days old. She was raised in the same home in the nearby Centennial School District, her entire childhood. She has one brother, who is five years older. Angela said her parents always supported her endeavors and she had a very loving home environment as a child. Her father has now passed, and her mom lives locally. Her brother and his family also live nearby. Angela played sports throughout her childhood, focusing on basketball and volleyball. She started as a competitive roller skater in her early years, before she began team sports. Although her parents were not themselves athletic, they strongly supported Angela and her brother and were "super fans" at both of their many sporting events. In her senior year at Centennial High School, Angela was coached by Sue Doan and the team made it to the state championships, losing to Gresham. Angela was recruited by Boise State University and earned a full-ride scholarship to play volleyball. In her junior year at BSU, her knees gave her problems and she came home. While a student, Angela met Brian Davis, a BSU football player. Brian proposed marriage when she returned home and they married in August 1995. They rented a home across the street from her parents and in May 1998, their first daughter, Claire was born. Brian was coaching football at Centennial and Angela was coaching volleyball, both working a variety of other jobs as well. Their son Austin was born in Dec. 1999. Brian was hired to work at Consolidated Freightways and they purchased their first home in Gresham. When their daughter Grace was born in 2004, Consolidated Freightways closed, so Brian got a job with Legacy Health and went back to school to finish his degree in business. Angela continued to coach volleyball at Centennial and additionally began coaching club volleyball. She then went back to school to finish her bachelor's degree in education. Zane was born in October 2006. Angela ultimately wanted to be a teacher, so she continued with school, earning a master's degree in secondary education with an English endorsement from Concordia University. She did her student teaching with Jennifer Ducey at Corbett High for one year, then applied for a job as a sophomore English teacher in 2016 at Corbett High School. She was hired and continued coaching volleyball. Brian, Angela, and their family moved to their Corbett home in 2009. Angela was able to live, work, and coach in the Corbett community- a dream come true! In 2020, her dream got even better. Angela was asked to consider applying for the Athletic Director position at Corbett and was hired in 2021. She said it was like learning to drink from a fire hose! She has learned the job well and was asked to run for the position of 3A State Representative for the ORDA (Oregon Athletic Directors Association). This would be her third year to represent the schools across Oregon in addressing concerns and implementing policy concerns when needed.
This is a sweet time in Angela's life. Her youngest son Zane is a senior at Corbett High, Brian and Angela have one grandson with two more grandchildren on the way from Claire and Austin. Claire teaches 6th grade at Corbett Grade School and is the middle school volleyball coach. Austin is a police officer and Grace is in college. Brian is in the process of earning his doctorate and is an administrator for the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office. Angela loves staying connected with the students. She said that studies have proven kids suffer from mental health and depression issues as a result of a lack of playing sports. This proved true during Covid. Angela says you can learn things on the field, court, and track that cannot be duplicated in the academic classroom. Angela feels extremely fortunate to both work and coach in Corbett!
