FINE ARTS/PE CURRICULUM NIGHT SLIDES
ART - Ms. Hausman
Welcome back to an exciting new school year at Glen Grove!
In the first couple of weeks we are re-familiarizing ourselves with the expectations in art (Art RULES when we follow the rules!). We are also taking some time to create an all school collaborative mural in the fine arts hallway to help get to know each other and show our love for Glen Grove!
Each grade level will be starting on a self portrait next. We will discuss why artists create self portraits and how they can be used to communicate more that just what we look like. We will look at the work of Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo as our inspiration. This piece will be saved and used as a tool to mark artistic growth over the years.
Artsonia is back up and running. If you are new to the district, please look for an email asking you to "accept" an invitation. It is a way for you to see your child's work and their thoughts about it. It is also an opportunity for you and other family members to be "fans" and leave encouraging comments (kids love it when they see a comment from you)! It is a fun way for family members to stay connected to your child! It is also a wonderful way to save work and monitor growth over the course of your child's time in District 34.
Assessment: Each unit and lesson in art will have learning targets that students will be striving to meet. During and at the end of each project, students will have the opportunity to reflect on how they met those.
Art Club is a fun, after school club that meets on Tuesdays from 2:40-3:45. There are six mini-clubs throughout the year, and students are allowed to sign up for one due to the high interest and numbers that sign up. Forms are going home today!! Check your child's backpack for a brightly colored pink paper! Clubs fill up quickly, so don't wait until the deadline to bring your forms in. Teachers are trained to ask kids as soon as they get to school to bring forms down to me in the art room. I will let you know the week of the 16th what club your child has made it in to and when it begins.
Exciting things are happening in our rooms and spaces! Don't you wish you could see it? You can!... Follow us on Instagram!! @glengrovefinearts

DRAMA - Mrs. Cole
During the first trimester, all students will be studying movement for the actor.
Third grade: Students will explore movement by creating tableaux, or living pictures. After learning how to compose a thoughtful and meaningful tableau, students will collaboratively present pictures stories trough tableaux.
Reinforce these skills at home be playing charades! Encourage your child to use their whole body including their face, arms, legs, and posture.
Fourth grade: Students will analyze movement by studying Laban Effort Drives. This is a system that categorizes characteristics of movement. Fourth graders will challenge themselves to utilize their understanding of effort drives to mimic the movement of animals.
Fifth grade: Students will be applying their understanding of movement to create silent films. Students will work together to create their own unique stories. Their attention to detail and versatility of movement will be highlighted as they exaggerate their movements to suit the silent film style. I am very excited to see their final projects!
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at mfrancomb@glenview34.org.

Welcome back Glen Grove students and parents! We enjoyed meeting all of you at Curriculum Night and are anxious to meet more of you as the school year progresses. We are off to a fabulous start in PE this year. It is always nice to see returning students as well as getting to know the new ones.
If you ever want to know what’s happening in your child’s PE class, please follow us on X: @Glen_Grove_PE. We post many fun activities and games on this platform. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase all the incredible things your child does in Physical Education class.
We are the two full-time Physical Education teachers: Mr. Preston Roberts and Mrs. Lori Marcotte. We have been teaching together for twenty years at Glen Grove. Please feel free to contact us at any time with questions. Preston Robert’s email address is: prroberts@glenview34.org, and Lori Marcotte’s email address is: lmarcotte@glenview34.org.
We started off the school year reviewing procedures, expectations, and learning the routines for PE class. We are encouraging students to eat healthy and stay active outside of school. We are starting with a Team Building unit, while we practice the standards of Personal Responsibility and Engagement. Personal Responsibility is the ability to stay positive and react appropriately. Engagement is showing high levels of attention, focus, and effort. These are the two standards students are assessed on throughout the entire school year. We review them daily with the students.
We are starting the year off with the Frisbee Unit. We will be working on the skills of throwing and catching, as well as playing Ultimate Frisbee. Students will be given the opportunity to pick the field they are most comfortable with when playing a scrimmage: beginner, intermediate, and advanced.
Next up is our soccer unit. Students will learn how to dribble, pass with various parts of their feet, shoot, and perform throw-ins. Students will learn when to use either a corner kick or goal kick. Students will engage in several stations emphasizing the different skills of soccer.
During the morning PE classes, the grass field is generally pretty wet because of the dew. Students’ shoes and socks may get wet so please feel free to have your children bring an extra set of shoes and/or socks. We apologize for any inconvenience.
Please feel free to contact one of the Physical Education teachers. We look forward to working with you and for another exciting year in PE!

MUSIC - MRS. FORREST
Welcome back to the music room at Glen Grove!
In our music classroom, students will have an opportunity to sing and play a variety of instruments each day. All students are considered musicians when they walk into music class!
3rd Grade: We are starting off with a review of steady beat and rhythm. 3rd graders demonstrated the difference between "beat" and "rhythm" by creating rhythms based on their names and sharing them with each other. Students are learning the song "Hello to All the Children of the World" which includes many different greetings from around the world. We are also reviewing music notation (whole, half, quarter, eighth notes) and will soon be using it to compose short rhythmic songs.
Fourth Grade: 4th grade students are beginning the year with a review of rhythmic notation. We are reviewing notation learned in 3rd grade and are tackling sixteenth notes next! 4th graders will soon begin a review of the lines and spaces of the treble clef and apply this while using melodic instruments in class. We are also exploring the concept of a canon while singing and playing.
Fifth Grade: In 5th grade, classes also began with a review of rhythmic notation. We are reviewing sixteenth note patterns and learning to read and write with dotted quarter notes. Over the next few weeks, students in 5th grade will work in small groups to create their own body percussion compositions and perform them for the class.
Chorus: Chorus forms have been sent home - check your child's backpack for their chorus registration form! All children are welcome to join us for a great year of singing. 3rd Grade Chorus begins on Wednesday, September 11 and 4th & 5th Grade Chorus begins on Thursday, September 12. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions regarding your child's participation in chorus.
Feel free to contact me at any time with questions or concerns at eforrest@glenview34.org. I am looking forward to a great year of music-making!
Band - Mrs. Warren
All 4th and 5th graders have the opportunity to play a band or orchestra instrument this year!
Enrollment for band and orchestra was due on September 4th. Once again, it looks like a lot of families have chosen to have their child participate in band and orchestra. We are very excited to get started!
If you missed the sign-up and your child would like to play a band instrument, please contact me immediately and I"ll see if I can find room in my schedule for your child.
It's been a busy start of year helping all of our 4th and 5th grade beginning instrumentalists pick their instruments of choice. We had an assembly where the middle school instrumentalists demonstrated several instruments. All 4th, and those 5th graders who are starting on a new instrument, had the opportunity to pick two instruments to try. Together, we selected their favorite and the one that seemed the most comfortable and best for their future success.
Beginning Band:
Beginning band students will start lessons the week of September 11th. Lesson schedules should be distributed on September 6th by email. Instruments that were rented by 9/4 through PM Music will be delivered the week of the 11th. The instruments will be given to students at their first lesson, once the instruments are delivered. Some students might not have their instruments at their first lesson and that is okay. We have plenty to learn! I'm really looking forward to getting to know the new beginning band members and making wonderful music together.
Advanced Band:
The advanced band has already had their first two rehearsals. We rehearse each Thursday before school. While we wake up early for this rehearsal, it means we no longer have to miss recess! Their lesson schedule will also be distributed on September 6th by email. It is great to be back together again and we are excited to learn our new pieces this year.
If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email me at cwarren@glenview34.org.
ORCHESTRA - Mr. Babcock
Welcome Back Everyone!
Hello, Orchestra Families,
Thank you for Participation in the Orchestra! I am very excited to have your student play in the Orchestra this year. Many students have never touched an Orchestra instrument until now, so it is a very thrilling time for them. Following is information you may find helpful.
INSTRUMENT INTRODUCTION AND PERFORMANCE ASSEMBLIES
On Monday, August 26, 2024, all 4 th and 5 th Grade students attended an assembly in the Gym where Attea and Springman MS Orchestra and Band Musicians performed and demonstrated all of the different instruments. Students then used their ipads to choose 2 Orchestra and 2 Band Instruments that they would like to try.
ORCHESTRA (AND BAND) INTRODUCTIONS TO TRY INSTRUMENTS
During the next 5-7 days, students had the opportunity to individually try the instruments on their own with the Orchestra (and Band) Teachers, and make a final choice. If your student has changed their instrument “choice” simply let Mr. Babcock know.
SIGN UP FOR ORCHESTRA ON LINE
All 4 th and 5 th Grade Families will be sent an email with a LINK to Sign up, Pay the District Fee, and to Access Rental or Purchase information. Click or copy and paste.
Here it is:
RENT OR PURCHASE AN INSTRUMENT, BOOK, AND MUSIC STAND
RENTAL / PURCHASE INSTRUMENTS
Instruments may be rented OR purchased through Hoffmann Strings LTD in Lincolnshire. (No relation to Hoffman School) Rental at Hoffmann Strings LTD includes the Book and Music Stand and Supplies. Students keep the Music Stand at home.
If your student is of average height for their age, they will most likely rent:
- 1/2 size violin (1/4 size if your student is shorter than average)
- 12 inch viola (11 inch if your student is shorter than average)
- 1/4 size cello
- 1/4 size bass
As students grow, in a year or two they will graduate to a 3/4 size instrument, and then later, a full 4/4 size instrument. This is why most parents rent, rather than purchase. Instrument sizes may be “switched or upgraded” during the year free of charge. Check your instrument rental contract. Give consideration to the extra couple of dollars for the in$urance, in case of damage or loss.
Hoffmann Strings, LTD
# 847-478-1163
If you decide to purchase, remember, not all violins/violas are alike. There are MANY substandard violins/violas on the market. PLEASE DO NOT PURCHASE THEM. Shar Music, and Southwest Strings, both on line, are ALSO reliable dealers for student to professional line instruments, depending on your budget, with kits starting at around $250 and up.
INSTRUMENT DELIVERY
Instruments will be delivered to the School to be handed out at the First Student Lesson. Instruments may then be taken home. All students carry their instruments from home to school for Lessons and Rehearsals. Instruments are allowed on the bus. Some Cellos may be available at school for student use, while keeping the student Cello at home. Basses are kept at home, and a school Bass is provided at school for Lessons and Rehearsals. Music stands are kept at home for individual practice.
LESSONS & REHEARSALS
