Pleasant Hill Family News
October 4, 2024
Pleasant Hill Families,
With the gorgeous fall weather upon us, we've been enjoying fresh air and time outside.
Next week, on October 9th, it's our first (optional) Walk/Bike/Roll to School Day! PH groups are meeting at:
- Tenney Lane and Farmhouse at 8:10
- Woodland and Nelsen (at the Little Free Library) at 8:35...I will be at this stop!
There are no safety officers or formal chaperones walking with groups. As a result, caregivers/parents are responsible for ensuring safe routes and safe travel. For more safety info, please see https://www.walkbiketoschool.org/plan/how-to-plan/safety-first/.
If you and others coordinate a meeting place and time, please email Mrs. Olore or myself and we'll put out a list of times and locations on October 8.
Both indoors and out, students have worked hard on the Pleasant Hill's 3 guidelines to Be Safe, Kind, and Focused. There was lots of focus this week as children dove into their iReady Diagnostic assessments. These were highlighted in last week's newsletter, but more information can be found here. We look forward to wrapping up iReady in the coming week+. The information we collect will allow us to target students' instruction to meet individual learning needs.
As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns.
I wish you all a wonderful weekend,
Jenn

Safer, Smarter Kids
This month in PE class, students will participate in lessons 1 & 2 of the Safer, Smarter Kids curriculum led by Mrs. Szeman, school counselor, and Ms. Spark, PE teacher.
Safer, Smarter Kids is an abuse prevention education curriculum designed for elementary-aged children, that meets the need for state mandated abuse prevention education. The education program uses developmentally appropriate information to arm children with the tools and language they need to better protect themselves from abuse.
This week, all students completed a Trusted Triangle of at least three grown-up buddies they can go to for help in any situation. Additionally, Kindergarteners and 1st graders practiced using a Safety Stop Sign and an I Mean Business Voice to let others know when they are feeling unsafe. 2nd graders learned about being aware of their surroundings to spot unsafe situations and discussed the importance of knowing their address and phone number, and with whom it is safe to share that information.
Students will participate in more lessons in the coming months.
For more information visit https://safersmarterkids.org/ or reach out to Mrs. Szeman at mszeman@scarboroughschools.org
Autumn Projects
Book Character Day - October 25th
On Friday, October 25th, we'll have Book Character Day at Pleasant Hill!
This is our chance to dive into reading, and learn a bit about the interesting character traits of characters we come to know in stories. In class, students will be working on projects related to book characters, and talking about their favorites.
If you wish, you may assist your child in dressing up as a book character on 10/25.
This is completely optional. Don't be surprised if you see some staff members dressed a little differently that day, too!
To keep things fun, safe, and comfortable for all, please remember to avoid:
- masks
- scary costumes
- inflatable costumes
- any props resembling weapons
We look forward to a fun day for all!

Communicating with the Main Office
Absence Reporting:
We ask families to report their child's absence from school by calling the main office at 207-730-5250 or by email at phoffice@scarboroughschools.org. When leaving a message, we ask that you state the reason for the absence, otherwise, office staff will reach back out to you for that information.
Excusable reasons for an absence:
- illness
- appointment
- religious holiday
- family emergency
- planned absence
For Planned Absences (a day out of school which is not illness or medical appointment related), families should fill out the PH Planned Absence Form. To reduce lost instructional time, we ask families to do their best to coordinate vacations so they line up with our scheduled school vacation weeks.
For questions about attendance, please contact the main office at 207-730-5250 or email us at phoffice@scarboroughschools.org
