Brown School Buzz
March 6, 2023
Dear Families,
Could it really be March already? As a former teacher, March was my favorite month for teaching. There were no vacations, very few interruptions, and the skills the kids had been practicing all year began to magically show up in their independent work, which was a truly satisfying feeling for a teacher! Students are indeed in the thick of the learning now, which also means it's becoming more challenging. Students are being asked to read and write for longer periods of time and apply the skills and knowledge they have been learning over the past six months. You will likely notice your child really taking off with their reading, writing and math thinking. With these new challenges come an increased need for consistent engagement and, well, regular attendance whenever children are healthy.
In the NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER, I wrote about the importance of arriving to school on time, along with some helpful hints for improving arrival times. Subsequently, the tardy rate did improve, unfortunately, it appears we have once again increased the number of students who are consistently tardy. Last week, I sent letters to the parents and care givers of students who have tallied 10 or more unexcused absences and/or tardies. The number of students was far more than I would have predicted. Being on time for school and in school whenever healthy, is critical, particularly as the instruction becomes more challenging and rigorous at this point in the year. It's important to note that all of our adopted curriculum is based on a 180 days of instruction, which is already an impossibility. With assemblies, field trips, and other important experiences, we are lucky to get in 170 of those days. Students missing days for illness is typically between 3-8 days per year. Well, we can all do the math, more days of missed days of instruction equals fewer instructional experiences and greater negative impact on learning. Thank you for understanding this importance as we all work together to create a culture that values learning, school, and understanding the impact tardiness has on learning and on others.
