There are some great people and things happening in 5th grade... Guess who...

1. This Safety Patrol member got to clip up to blue (Way to Go!) for Music class because he came prepared with his recorder and worked hard during class. He stayed on blue all day! This person is Elian G.
2. This 5th grader had a great day and stayed on blue. He also blew Mr. Ablan away in Music with his great recorder skills as he earned another bead. Did you guess who? It's Caleb J.

You should have received a yellow sheet in Thursday folders about the International Project that is due on April 20th. Fifth grade was assigned the country Asia, however students can choose their family/native/ancestral country. There is a piece that needs your signature that needs to be turned in by Wed., March 17th). Once the sheet is signed & turned in, it will be returned to you for planning purposes.

This is a mostly at home project, however, students will be given some time in class to look up information. They will put this information in a GoogleDoc so that they will have access to it wherever they are.

We will continue working with decimals. Our focus for this unit is the computation of decimals (adding, subtracting, multiplying, & dividing decimals). The Post Test for this unit will be before Spring Break.

Please start/continue practicing multiplication facts at home. Fractions are the bulk of the 5th Grade Math EOG and knowing their multiplication facts makes this easier.

This week we did a lot of testing, so the students read more in class and finished up outstanding assignments. Students should have turned in test corrections for their Cycle 3 Assessment. There was no contract this week.

Next week our Contracts come back as we try to complete our long term projects and practice context clues (as our Cycle 3 Assessment told us that we need to work on this). We will begin a unit on Historical Fiction. This is my favorite unit and students will begin book clubs when we return from Spring Break.

Please make sure your child is still reading a fiction book for enjoyment and jotting nightly. This book should come back and forth from school to home daily. Remind them to log their reading on Biblionasium daily.

We have been finishing up our unit in Ecosystems. This week we examined the different biomes that exist in the world. We also presented our Ecosystems Projects. Next week, we will be wrapping up our unit on Ecosystems.

There will be an Ecosystems Vocabulary Test on Monday, March 14th. Please have students keep practicing their vocabulary words in Science. The Ecosystem Unit Vocabulary List can be found on my Weebly. To practice vocabulary words, I would suggest creating vocabulary flash cards with the word on the front and the definition with examples on the back to promote further understanding.

On Friday, March 18th, we will conclude our Ecosystems unit by taking our Ecosystems Unit Post Test. Study guides will be coming on Monday.
