SMS Uniform Guidelines
Special Uniform Edition: 2024-2025
Can you believe it's time to start shopping for uniforms?!
BUT WAIT!
STOP right there!
Don't purchase anything just yet!
We must ask you all to please read this carefully as there have been several changes to the uniform guidelines for this coming year. Please do not go out and buy anything until you have read over the changes.
Most importantly, there will be no hoodies allowed this year, and leggings will only be allowed underneath a skirt or jumper. High top sneakers are not allowed. Yoga pants and leggings are not a part of the PE uniform. These are sneaking their way into our school and undermining the wisdom and effectiveness of our uniform philosophy. As parents and guardians, thank you so much for your continued support with this change.
*** Mandatory Changes for 24/25 ***
No high-top sneakers
Grades 9-12 will need PE uniforms
Lands End and Tommy Hilfiger are the preferred uniform vendors to ensure compliance
Saint Michael School Uniform Philosophy
The use of uniforms has several significant benefits:
- They promote the mindset that school is a special place with special expectations.
- Uniforms help to develop and enhance school pride.
- They project a positive image to the community and eliminate the pressure of “dress competition.”
“A uniform silently teaches the lesson of equality while allowing individuality to shine through via action, words, and personality.”
Please ensure that your child adheres to our Uniform Dress Code and treats this code with respect.
We will be working very hard this year to address departures from the dress code. It is the responsibility of families to make sure students are dressed and ready for the day, before they arrive at school. Students who do not follow the uniform dress code will be asked to change into appropriate attire. The Principal has final discretion about the appropriateness of student attire.

BUT wait a minute.... what if your student is in preschool?
We do not expect preschoolers to wear the SMS uniform.
That responsibility and privilege begins in kindergarten.
If you have a child in preschool, please just make sure their shoes and clothing are comfortable, appropriate, and acceptable to play in for the duration of their day.
We encourage our littlest learners to play hard,
to paint without inhibitions,
and to learn to eat independently,
...so their clothing will inevitably get dirty!
More guidance will come from our teachers
in their ' Welcome Back letter'.

Dress Code Policy: Dress Down Days
From time to time during the school year, there will be announced Dress Down Days. These may be part of a celebration, a reward, or part of a school fundraiser. In addition, students are invited to “Dress Down” on their birthday, as a way to celebrate. If your student has a summer birthday, they are able to choose another day to redeem their “Dress Down” pass. (not on a Mass Day)
Students are expected to wear modest, casual clothes that are in keeping with the Catholic school environment. Tank-tops, yoga pants, mini-skirts, or dresses/skirts that do not conform to the established length requirements in the dress code policy are never permitted.
If a parent or student is unsure if clothing is in compliance with these expectations, prudence would dictate that the outfit should not be worn.
Some reminders for what NOT to wear:
DID YOU KNOW: SMS has a private parents Facebook group?
If you have Facebook, and would like to connect with other families through our private Facebook page, please click on this link or search for "St Michael’s School Parents, VT".
This page is separate from our public school page, has been established by SMS parents, and can be a great way to connect with other SMS families outside of school.
