Creating Cyanotypes | Middle School Art Display
Drawing inspiration from the first ever photo book created by Anna Atkins, middle school students engaged in printmaking, painting specimens, and creating cyanotypes—photograms are made by placing specimens on light-sensitive paper to produce a negative image. Students rolled botanical specimens with ink, placed paper on the plants, and rubbed it to unveil a positive image. The finished projects are truly remarkable!
Fun Facts and Art
6th grade art students explored the history of printmaking, beginning with the discovery that fishermen created the first prints to showcase the fish they caught and sold. After this, students selected a plastic model fish to ink and print using the relief printmaking technique. They were encouraged to experiment with various media, such as paint, markers, and pencils, to place the printed fish in a contextual environment.
Galette des rois
SVA French students kicked off the new semester by tasting the traditional French dessert, la galette des rois. They explored its history, traditions, and recipes, with a few lucky students crowned king or queen for the day! This experience combined culinary enjoyment with cultural learning.

High School Boys Basketball/Girls Basketball
HS Boys Basketball:
It has been an extremely busy last couple of months for the Boys Basketball program. On Tuesday, 12/10, they hosted Platte Valley, who was a scrappy and strong opponent for all three levels. The C team battled hard and had plenty of opportunities, but unfortunately, they were unable to come out on top.
The JV team fought their tails off and won by 18 points. Junior Brady McGrath added a huge spark offensively as he cashed in on multiple threes. The team defense was on a tear, providing countless opportunities for the offense to capitalize. The varsity team was in a dogfight but they were able to pull away in the fourth quarter, winning by 12. Senior Reagan Lewis proved to be the offensive mismatch as he finished the game as the leading scorer with 15 points.
The Varsity team finished that week by competing in a high-level 3A tournament, beginning with a matchup against Peyton HS. Our boys once again used defense as the difference-maker, winning 50-38. Junior Clay Cosart was a huge spark off the bench, finishing with 9 key points and creating multiple big stops on defense.
Next, the Varsity team moved to the semi-final of the tournament, facing Denver Christian. It was a gritty dogfight the entire game, but thanks to senior captain Markus Lloyd’s 21 points and multiple fourth-quarter buckets, the varsity team won 54-48, advancing to the championship game.
In the championship game, the varsity team took on Highland HS, the number two ranked team in 3A. Unfortunately, the boys lost this game due to a rough second quarter, but overall, they proved they can compete with anyone in 3A.
After a brief holiday break, the program started back up this past Wednesday when the JV and varsity traveled to Front Range Christian. The JV was absolutely lights out from shooting, especially in the first half, totaling 8 threes. Sophomore Andrew Eschamann was a force to be reckoned with, hitting three consecutive threes to start the game and helping propel the team to a dominant 40+ win.
The Varsity came out firing, starting on a 19-1 run that led to a lopsided 66-38 win. Senior Captain Isaac Dove had his best all-around game of the season, finishing with 23 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists.
All three levels welcomed a tough league opponent in Heritage Christian. The C team played their best game of the season, powered by sophomore Sawyer Gray’s athletic ability to control the floor and cash in on multiple threes. They capitalized on Heritage Christian’s mistakes, leading to a big win for the C team.
The JV dictated the pace of the game immediately, winning by 30+ again. It was a complete team effort, but sophomore Bronson Kiraly was unstoppable down low, having his best game of the season with his size and ability to finish around the rim proving to be a huge difference maker.
The Varsity team joined the JV, coming out strong against Heritage Christian. The game was always in control for the varsity team as they won 70-54, behind Senior Brodie Funk’s impressive performance. The senior, who has missed over a year with a torn ACL, made his second start of the season and made the most of his opportunity, finishing with 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting.
The C team improved to 2-1, the JV remained undefeated at 5-0, and the varsity improved to 6-2, currently ranking 8th in all of 3A. This upcoming week, all three levels have critical home games against conference rival Bishop Machebeuf on Wednesday (1/15) and a road game on Friday (1/17) against Estes Park HS. Good luck to all of our teams!
HS Girls Basketball:
The Girls Basketball program has been actively competing, with six games played since December 10th. Both the JV and Varsity teams faced Platte Valley on December 10, but unfortunately, neither secured a victory. The varsity squad participated in a challenging 3A basketball tournament, competing against formidable opponents including the defending state champions Colorado Springs Christian and Forge Christian, as well as the state runner-up Peyton HS. Despite some hard-fought games and noticeable improvement over the tournament, the team did not achieve a win.
The girls bounced back with impressive road victories against Front Range Christian. The JV team excelled, creating numerous steals and scoring many transition points. Freshman Kate Bonds had a standout performance, showcasing her speed and skills with several tough finishes around the rim.
The Varsity team also triumphed over Front Range with a score of 42-34, led by Senior captain Lydia Slocum and Junior Reagan Martin, who both scored 17 points.
In their most recent games against Heritage Christian, the JV team continued their success, while the varsity faced a tough loss. The JV team has a week off, while the varsity will host Machebeuf this Wednesday and travel to Estes Park HS on Friday. Good luck to our Varsity girls team!
