FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

2022-2023 FAFSA and NYS Application for TAP Now Open

• The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is found at fafsa.gov.
• At the end of the FASFA, students who are NYS residents and indicated at least one NYS college on their FAFSA can access the NYS TAP application and complete both applications in one session.
• Helpful FAFSA features include the Internal Revenue Services Data Retrieval Tool (IRS DRT) that enables students and their parents to electronically transfer their 2020 tax return information when completing the FAFSA.
• You are encouraged to complete the FAFSA as soon as possible to meet college deadlines and maximize financial aid opportunities. Many colleges use FAFSA information to calculate amounts and types of aid students may qualify for, and each college has its own schedule for awarding financial aid.

Get Your FSA ID Before Completing the FAFSA

• FSA IDs are created at fsaid.ed.gov.
• Each student and one parent need FSA IDs to electronically sign and submit the FAFSA. Students taking federal student loans will also need their FSA ID to sign for any federal student loans they decide to take.
• Although students and parents can get an FSA ID while filling out the FAFSA, getting it ahead of time will make the entire process much smoother.
• Students and parents must create their own FSA IDs with their own personal information. Each FSA ID is for the exclusive use of that individual and cannot be shared.
• An FSA ID cannot be created by any individual on behalf of someone else, including a family member.
• The student and parent's information at the Social Security Administration (SSA) must be correct or corrected before getting an FSA ID. Visit SSA at www.ssa.gov to learn how to correct any errors.

If you are applying to any two and/or four year SUNY schools, please sign up for alerts and information for New York State's Excelsior Scholarship Program. This is a wonderful opportunity to potentially have tuition covered while attending a SUNY or CUNY school.

Dollars for Scholars

It is never too early to start your Dollars for Scholars online application! Our local chapter gives out thousands of dollars in scholarships at our graduation ceremony for eligible students. The Schuylerville online application can be found here.

• Once you are on the home page, click on the 'Students and Parents' tab at the top of the page.
• On this next page, under Student and Parent Login, click on the red Login. This will open the Scholarship America Dollars for Scholars Student Center. You should see 'Don't have an account yet? Create one here'.
• After clicking on that link in Schuylerville Junior-Senior High School, under 'High School Name' and click on the blue link that reads 'Choose this school'.
• You will then be directed to several pages of info that students need to fill in...only those with asterisks are required.

SUNY Albany - Capital District Leadership Awards

Eligible applicants must attend high school in Saratoga or Washington county and be academically competitive. The applicant must apply for admission to SUNY Albany using the Early Action option (12/1) and highlight leadership/service activities on the application. Boston University - Trustee & Presidential Scholarship

Students with outstanding academic records and strong leadership skills can apply to Boston University and be considered for one of the merit-based scholarships below.

• Trustee Scholarship: Boston University's most prestigious full-tuition scholarship recognizes extraordinary academic performance and leadership ability. Students must submit one additional essay with their application for admission.
• Presidential Scholarship: This four-year, $25,000 scholarship is awarded to students with exceptional academic achievements. No additional application materials are required—all students need to do to be considered is apply for admission by the scholarship deadline.

The application deadline for these scholarships is December 1, 2021.

SUNY ADIRONDACK will be hosting Open Houses in November for various programs! Please see more information below:

• November 3rd from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The degree programs highlighted will be Fine Arts, Media Arts and Broadcast Media Production. Please register for this event here.
• November 18th, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The degree programs will be Technology, Engineering and Computer Science (TECS). Please register for this event here.

College & Military Virtual Information Sessions

Visits from college / military representatives are wrapping up but will continue to take place through the beginning of November. Most of the informational sessions will be in-person with a representative from the Office of Admissions; however, there will be a few held virtually. For the virtual session, we will send out the Google Meet link to interested students ahead of time. This schedule will be updated frequently, so please be sure to check the daily announcements, as well as your email and posters that are hanging in the hallways!

SAT/ACT Testing Information:

The SAT and the ACT will be offered on the following (Saturday) national testing dates. The cost of the SAT is $55. The ACT has a basic fee of $60.00, with an optional writing test (cost with writing is $85.00). If the cost of these tests presents a hardship, you may be eligible for a fee waiver. Please check with Mrs. Rust or Mrs. O'Brien.

PSAT Information

If you took the PSAT/NMSQT in October, your scores should be released on December 6th and 7th. Emails will be sent about how to create College Board accounts, see score reports online, and unlock personalized resources to prepare for the SAT and explore colleges and careers.

REMINDER --- Registration is now open for the 2022 HOBY State Leadership Seminar!

This multi-day program is proven to provide students with an experience that cultivates personal growth and leadership development while building new connections and friendships throughout the state. Students return from HOBY with a deeper sense of self-awareness, elevated confidence, and the inspiration and tools to give back to their communities through leadership and service.

What is HOBY?

HOBY’s (Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership) mission is to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation.

HOBY programs provide students selected by their schools to participate in unique leadership training, service learning and motivation building experiences.

High School sophomores from across the country.

Where: SUNY New Paltz in New Paltz, NY

When: Friday, June 3, 2022 to Sunday, June 5, 2022.

There will be both an in-person and virtual event

Why attend?

HOBY allows students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, workplace and community. Students attend seminars and participate in hands on leadership activities, meet leaders in their state and explore their own personal leadership skills while learning how to make a positive impact in their community.

How do I apply for consideration?

Students must submit a typed, 200-300 word essay on the following topic:

Please describe both the most rewarding and the most challenging aspect of being a leader in your school and/or community.

Students interested in applying also need to submit a typed resume highlighting their involvement in community service.

Once these items have been received by your school counselor, an interview may take place as the final component of the application process.

It's hard to believe that the first 10 weeks of your high school career are almost behind you! We want you to continue keeping track of your grades and classes while being mindful of classroom learning expectations. Remember, the first year of high school sets the foundation for your permanent transcript.
