Community School Newsletter for SLZHS
Introduction and Welcome
San Lorenzo HS is a recipient of California's Community School grant program, where we receive money and technical support to provide services and support that fit each neighborhood's needs. Being a community school means that we are a public school committed to working with students, staff, families and the greater community to support success for all of our students. You will be receiving a monthly newsletter from the community schools team. In this newsletter, you can learn about important meetings, surveys, and community events.
The most important thing that you can do as a SLZHS community member is to use your voice and complete the needs and asset assessment that has been distributed widely. Please see below for more information on how to complete the family/caregiver survey.
Parent, Family and Caregiver Survey
Asset and Needs Assessment
A Community School is a public school that brings together academics, health and social services, youth and community development, and community engagement under one roof, contributing to improved learning, stronger families, and healthier communities.
An assets (strengths) and needs assessment is used to identify the strengths and needs of the school community by hearing from a supermajority of school interest groups. That means that all groups participation rates must be 75% or higher to ensure that we capture the voices of all community members.
We need nearly 800 families to complete this survey to tell us what you love about SLZHS and what your hopes and dreams for the school are. Please select the most appropriate language for you:
Once the needs assessment is complete, an advisory committee will generate an implementation plan that will operate through the end of the 2026-2027 school year and have over $300,000 available to spend.

Ixchel Baltazar, Community School Liaison
As a bilingual Community School Liaison I am very excited to be part of the San Lorenzo High School Community. Working in education for the past six years as a Family Engagement Outreach & Equity Specialist &Community School Coordinator, I have developed connections & expertise in building strong relationships with the school community.
My role as a liaison is to serve as a bridge between our school, the community, and student’s home by connecting families to community resources & basic needs. I want to extend my support by sharing useful resources & valuable tools with our families that will assist our students in succeeding academically and beyond. My purpose at the school is to ensure that students & families have access to as much information and resources as possible to enhance their student’s success in high school.

David Haupert, Community School Coordinator
One of my primary jobs is to administer the community school grant from California, which is a 5 year grant that seeks to maximize the partnership between school, students, families and the community. The first step in administering the grant is to develop a strength and needs assessment, which you will read more about below in this newsletter.

School Clubs Spotlight
Link Crew
Link Crew is a high school transition program that welcomes 9th graders and makes them feel comfortable throughout the first year of their high school experience. In addition, Link Crew supports students who have recently immigrated to the US as they transition into the US school system.
Built on the belief that students can help students succeed, mentors from 10th, 11th and 12th grade classes are trained to be Link Crew Leaders. As positive role models, Link Crew Leaders are mentors and student leaders who guide the 9th graders to discover what it takes to be successful during the transition to high school and help facilitate 9th grade success. Link Crew provides the structure for new high school students to receive support and guidance from 10th, 11th and 12th graders who have been through the challenges that high school poses, and understand that the transition to a larger school can sometimes be overwhelming.
Link Crew is a yearlong transition program with four components that contribute to its success:
- High School Orientation - Link Leaders and 9th graders start building the mentor relationship and 9th graders receive information about how to be successful in high school
- Academic Follow Ups - Link Leaders support 9th grade academic success and character development through structured classroom visits
- Social Follow Ups - Link Leaders and 9th graders connect outside the classroom at social events to increase student engagement, and promote positive school climate
- Leader Initiated Contacts - Link Leaders connect with their 9th graders on a more individual basis
La Raza
La Raza is a student-run affinity organization at SLZHS intended to create community and support Latine students on campus. We maintain a community space, hold monthly general meetings, and create weekly programming to show Latine students the ropes of high school. This club educates students about Latine cultures and works to eradicate discrimination. Students can learn about, appreciate, and celebrate Latine culture through a variety of projects and activities.
The club advisor for La Raza is Ms. Barajas. Any interested student or staff member can join the group on Thursdays at Lunch.
