High schools applaud Seal of Biliteracy, achieving students
Springdale Public Schools celebrated about 180 Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy recipients in April and May ceremonies at Don Tyson School of Innovation and Har-Ber and Springdale high schools.
Springdale High School celebrated 77 Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy recipients at an April 29 ceremony, Har-Ber High School honored 81students at an recognition May 2, and Don Tyson School of Innovation included their 63 seal recipients in a May 8 end-of-year award event for more than 100 students.
Springdale Schools also has the most students certified biliterate in Marshallese in the state, said Kristen Novotny, Springdale High School teacher, with 37 of the 48 students attending Springdale High.
Seal recipients had to score proficient or better in English when taking the ACT, ACT Aspire or ELPA to earn the recognition, Novotny said. For their second language, students had to pass the reading, writing, listening and speaking portions of an AP or STAMP language test.
The state has recognized 5,553 total students from 105 high schools in 28 languages with the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy to date, according to an Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy press release.
Novotny said 1,191 students received the seal this school year, 415 in 48 schools in the fall and 776 in 64 schools for the spring.
Students were presented with a certificate and medal at their respective ceremonies to recognize their achievement.
The Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy is sponsored by the Arkansas Department of Education, the Arkansas Foreign Language Teachers Association and Arkansas Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, according to the Arkansas Seal of Biliteracy website. The seal was officially endorsed by the Arkansas Department of Education in 2018.
